42. I hope the OP was being sarcastic. Putting Hillary on the ticket would be a catastrophe.
She has only won Independents in 4 (four!) primary contests. She would pull all the Goopers from the woodwork like a vacuum cleaner and demolish our down-ticket chances. Really, really bad idea. Fortunately for Dems Barack is not stupid.

49. Agreed.
Hillary is a distraction from the new style of politics Obama wants to engage in. Hillary has indicated that she wants nothing to do with this, so good riddance to her. Plus, 2 senators on the same ticket? McCain will just get Romney or Huckabee on his ticket and laugh at the lack of executive experience on the Dem ticket.

Fascinating. The people with the greatest formative influence on Obama's world view and focus on relationships wouldn't vote for him?

I sense there's something missing in the characterization of the demographic. Just WHAT is it that these people DON'T have in common with Obama's mother and grandmother?

Let me think.

Hmmmmm...

Naww...

Couldn't be.

Could it?

114. there are other ways to bring that demo home
the issue of reproductive rights alone will probably be enough for older white women to vote against McCain, but if a woman on the ticket is the only way, it doesn't have to be Hillary. Napolitano or Sibelius would be better -- they have executive experience and won't energize the 2 or 3% that might vote for Bob Barr or some other third party candidate unless their arch nemesis Clinton is running.

I wouldn't advise Obama to pick a VP to avoid angering the crazies. For too long, our party has tried to second guess what republicans were doing rather than just choosing the candidate we thought was best -- but if it can be avoided as a side benefit, great.

No wonder our party is split... We are doing it to ourselves....

She brings nothing to the party that Obama can't get on his own. THe white women will vote for Obama over McCain especially if Hillary has a shred of decency left in her to support Obama and encourage her supporters to get on board, no strings attached.
She doesn't deserve a place on the ticket after her performance in this campaign.

65. Neither Obama nor Clinton
are the best matchup no matter who is president. Some cardinal rules about the veep slot remain even though the close enthusiastic division seems to have a simple math to it. Too many first with negatives. Never pick a candidate who can do you harm. Being outshone or rivaled in any way by a Veep usually makes the presidential nominee staff put down any advantages thereby turning pluses into zeros. Hillary is immensely strong in states the Dems usually win anyway and Obama is no exception. Hillary is too big for the spot in some ways, some of them the negatives the GOP hungers to retain.

Obama would have the necessary task by the sheer power of the Clintons to sideline them or keep them in place. That is not a productive campaign partnership and worse in office. You can bet on one thing. The famous disappearing Dem Veep would not happen simply because the MSM would voraciously cover Hillary MORE than Obama. I wouldn't look forward to adding up the MSM scores that would bear me out.

All this is premature. First there must be healing. If Hillary is trying to thread a demand for the VP spot into this, irony and distrust take over, because her wisest course for the benefit of all would be to bow out in favor of someone else. If she merely wants to torture Obama a little longer and demonstrate her insistent presence she can hold back, expecting to be offered the position out of courtesy and letting the Obama campaign sweat it out in fear she would accept.

There are many ways this ticket could happen as you predict. It would not be the best thing to happen for very long after its unwise creation.

The notion that the President and vice-president have to be friends is just silly, and not supported by history. She'd be the best candidate to help him win.

32. Don't be so foolish
Clinton brought out over 16 million voters to the primaries. She's very popular with white women, white men, and Latinos. And a LOT of those people don't like the Rev. Wright connections. We need to hang on to what we have.

Go on... be shortsightedly vindictive. That will win the election.... riiiiiiiiiight

67. Well, at least you tried some logic that time (still very wrong)
you're still wrong, but this wasn't as pointless as your original post.

So let me try again- do ya' THINK that it might be better to find someone who appeals to those very same voters but DOESN'T bring with her/him the staggering negative numbrs that Hillary does?

Why in the world would you want to saddle a Democratic nominee with someone with 58% negative approval ratings?

This has nothing to do with being vindictive. This has everything to do with being sane.

There are other VP candidates who can appeal to the Hillary voters.

100. I think it would pull Hillary supporters back in
Because the number of Hillary supporters claiming they wont vote for Obama is a little alarming, to be honest. It helps with the white, blue collar workers where Hillary has run stronger. I guess the argument is that any white (probably male) person who is viewed as a populist could do the same thing, but I don't know. It will also help with white females, especially in the south (I think). Females usually tend to vote the Democratic ticket more than males and I think with Hillary on the ticket maybe we get another 2% of the female vote, and nationally, that's a lot of peeps.

Don't get me wrong, I am *NOT* happy with the way Hillary has run her campaign but I have changed my tune on her being VP. I was formerly against putting Hillary on the ticket. I've changed my mind.

That being said, I think some of the arguments being made to NOT put her on the ticket are very reasonable. Some of our knee-jerk posters are doing the the knee-jerk dance about putting her on the ticket, but there some good arguments as to why she shouldn't be VP as well. I'm not 100% sold myself, but right now, I think it's the best idea.

I think there have been too many negative attacks and bad feelings for them to productively work together for the good of the country. Also, though many won't agree, i don't trust Clinton to help get Obama elected. Even after she must have known she would never get the nomination, she has continued to try and hurt his chances in November. I believe it is because she wants the chance to run again in 4 years. She will be an even stronger candidate in 4 years if she was the VP in this election and lost.

88. I had a conversation with a friend yesterday ...
She's a Dem, but she has voted for moderate Republicans in the past. (In recent years, she's come to realize how bad the GOP is, so they don't get her vote anymore.) She's not a political junkie. She doesn't analyze all the polls and strategies. She's not swayed by the stupid distractions. (Her reaction to Wright and sniper-gate was, "Who cares? How does this affect my life?) Basically ... she finds out where each candidate stands on the issues that matter to her and she votes.

She likes both Obama and Clinton and would have no problem voting for either.

So yesterday, I mentioned that the pundits are talking about the possibility of Hillary as VP. My friend was very surprised. She said, "What? Are they crazy? Hillary's been all over the news for months attacking Obama. She said he wasn't experienced enough ... then that whole 'sky opening up' bit where she made fun of him ... and 'Shame on you!' ... remember that? McCain will use all that stuff in his ads!"

I was a little surprised that she was aware of those things, but then I remembered that the clips were played on the local news a lot, so even people who don't really follow politics were exposed to them.

Even though I totally agree with her, I said, "But McCain's going to use those things in his ads, anyway."

She said, "Sure he will ... but it will be so much worse if those words are coming from Obama's vice president. He can't have a running mate who makes fun of him or doesn't believe in him."

This is a person who had minimal exposure to that crap - a person who doesn't sit in front of the television listening to pundits and partisans - and even she knows why Hillary would be a bad choice. :-(

A few months ago, a joint ticket with either one at the top would have been fine by me. It would have been unbeatable. But Hillary crossed the line. Mentioning "Farrakhan" and "Hamas" during the last debate was the final nail in the "joint-ticket" coffin.

When you put that together with the fact that Obama's entire campaign is based on changing "old-Washington politics" and Hillary is "old-Washington politics" it becomes clear that she won't help. Her presence may very well turn off all the new, young voters who want to see change in the way things are done. Obama is running a campaign that looks to the future - he can't have a running mate who's so strongly identified with the past.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Hillary is black mailing Obama with this "you will never get the white voters crap" You people will soon find a home over at Freerepublic I promise you. I'm so sick of this "white working class vote" because that is a bunch of crap. Those who are pissed off about Rev Wright were looking for an excuse not to vote for Obama so whether it was Wright or something else they would of found that excuse by the time November came around. What some of you fail to realize, those of you who want to coddle these bigot dixiecrats is that they are fucking racist simple as that.

Obama has brought in enough people to cut those idiots from the party and rightfully so. Let them go to the dark side where they feel more comfortable. No it would be stupid to put Hillary on the ticket as far as I am concern she has not earned it. Her Rovian tactics have no place in the way people want to move forward. Let her be on the ticket with McCain, hell she is stealing his policy ideas. Obama can and will no better when it is time to pick a candidate. There are so many others out there with the right experience and potential to help move this country forward. If Obama needs to pick a white person as a candidate to bring in those stupid bigots then by all means there are plenty of white people out there who are ready for the job of veep. I on the other hand am not worried about the bigot fraction of the party and it makes me wonder why some of you are so damn worried about them. They bring nothing to the party but ignorance. This is a new time a new era in politics and we don't need more of the same. Those who are not willing to move past the ignorance and racism should find a home elsewhere.

126. OK, here is my thoughts on this (and I LOVE Hillary Clinton)
First, even if he offered she would say no. So right there it is a moot point. Second, as much as some people on this board might not want to accept it, the polling data indicates that it would be a much stronger ticket. I saw a poll that indicated he did nine points better with her on the ticket. That is a huge jump just for picking a VP. So there ARE a lot of furious Hillary supporters who need to be won over and it can't be on condescending terms ("We're ready to forgive you and let you join the revolution"). People on sites like DU need to accept that Hillary does have a decent number of supporters who love her, and Barack hasn't gotten too many more votes then her. So that fact has to be taken into account when picking a running mate.

I think he MUST pick someone who was a staunch Hillary backer in the primaries. I don't know if that will be Evan Bayh or Wes Clark, but both would be very good choices. As a Hillary supporter who has not yet decided whether I will vote for Obama, picking one of them would go A LONG WAY towards getting my vote.

Steve

128. Not going to happen
Regardless of whether or not it would be a good idea (and I could go either way), it's not going to happen for three reasons:
1) Too much history. I'm sure Obama wants to leave the old politics behind but the man's still human and too much has happened in this incredibly vicious campaign.
2) Clinton's high negatives. While Hillary has a lot of admirers (and more than a few crazies), I suspect the percentage of the populace who hate her with a passion is even higher. Most of that hatred has nothing to do with her but if she's on the ticket, they'll make the effort to vote where they would otherwise stay home.
3) Even if it was offered, I honestly don't see Hillary accepting. Admittedly, this is gut feeling on my part.

That said, I can see several positions in an Obama administration that she'd be well suited for if she'd take them; solicitor general (remember, Hillary was a lawyer and by all accounts, she's extremely good) or Sec. of Health spring to mind.

130. I disagree

I am interested in seeing CHANGE in my government. The notion that Hillary needs to be on the ticket (or has earned/demanded/pleaded for/is entitled to...etc etc is a step in the wrong direction.(my opinion only). If I wanted her to have a place on the ticket,I would have voted for her instead of Obama.

Not to be offensive or anything, but she represents same-old same-old,and thats why I support Obama.

Hillary on the ticket?..just say no.

136. No
Barak can not run the kind of change campaign he wants to with her on the ticket. She would bring him nothing. Also, her negative ratings are too high for a general election.

137. Not just "no" but "HELL NO"
Hillary has embarrassed herself, and many of us, by her antics in recent weeks. That family needs a "selflessness" implant, and soon.
