Edited on Thu May-08-08 10:00 AM by sparosnare
I've been reading posts on this subject but have yet to see anything other than it mentioned on a couple of blogs.

Some DUers are angry and are claiming they'll hold off on donating to Obama since he is going to pay off Hillary's debt. As far as I can tell there is no credible source to substantiate the rumor.

So before jumping to conclusions and continuing to perpetuate what seems like a nasty rumor (possibly started by the Clinton campaign), don't get too worked up.

1. Russert made it up out of whole cloth.
Or the Clinton campaign whispered in his ear.

2. All we know is that Russert said it...we don't know if he made it up..
...or your other allegation that Clinton whispered it in his ear, yet people (as usual) are running around here like it's Bible truth.

3. It is done all the time. McSame is paying off Rudy's debts and Bill paid off his opponents in 1992.

The only difference is the vast size of her red ink.

They may agree to cover all but her own loans of $11.4 million. That was her own money she threw into a sinkhole.

5. Didn't know that ~ now I see
why she is spending like crazy~ wants to hurt Obama and our party.

Is there no end to her tricks.

She keeps running to destroy him and then begs for money.

That is dirty!

When all the others were paid off did they play all the flame cards agasinst there opponents?

16. Yeah, Hillary is like the crazy soon to be divorcee who
wants to spend their soon to be ex into the ground.

That happened to a friend of mine...her husband went to Vegas with his new girlfriend, bought himself a 1500 watch, and new big ass TV and maxed out all their credit cards. What a creep. And HE was the one doing the cheating. She didn't do anything to him.

10. It is the nature of her "vast red ink"
Edited on Thu May-08-08 10:30 AM by Yael
Two loans to herself, millions upon millions to Mark Penn, suites at the Bellagio.

She is worth an estimated $50 million and the thought of middle class donations to a candidate being used to bail out her bad decisions is just beyond the pale.

I also don't recall Rudy focusing his campaign on attacks against McCain. Can you point me to that comparison to what we are witnessing from her? Rudy didn't seek out to destroy the Republican party for personal gain as she has with Democrats.

12. There's another difference. A BIG difference.
The bulk of Obama's money comes form ordinary people who have contributed small amounts. I can understand why people, especially those who have never contributed before, would not want this to happen.

The Clintons have 150 mil in the bank. They can pay it off themselves.

18. I don't care. I will not fund Hillary's campaign. If Obama buys her off, he's seen....
...the last donation from me.

Of course, I'm within $500 of my max, anyway, but my husband still has at least $2000 to go, and he feels the same way.

6. Obama should trust his advisers
His advisers got him this far. If they think he should pay off Clinton's debt, then he should. He should not worry about those who are more obsessed with hating Clinton than supporting him. Those obsessed with Clinton have been around for a long time, mostly on the right, but obviously it's a contagious illness.

14. He should also take his supporters feelings into consideration
First of all I am not, "more obsessed with hating Clinton than supporting him." But, I am on disability, trying to put my son through college and the little bit of money i have been able to contribute, I contributed to HIS campaign, not to a campaign that did everything it could to destroy my candidate of choice.

23. Yeah, but ...
... the bottom line is that if Obama can get the Clintons to campaign vigorously for him and to woo Hillary's supporters, that's worth a great deal. I personally would rather not see money go to Clinton -- it's not like she's poor -- but she does have an awful lot of clout in the Democratic Party and the nation among older people, women, poor whites, and Latinos. Obama got this far, but the rest of the journey is no cakewalk, especially given the depths to which Republicans are willing to sink to win the election.

9. Yes they do.
I can't help but think the rumor was started by Clinton to piss off Obama supporters, knowing how many ordinary people have contributed small amounts.

8. There is no proof to it
Those of us who are upset are asking the campaign to address it one way or another.

13. It is conjecture, based on past campaigns
I know that Clinton helped Vilsack and Dean helped Mosley/Braun. I don't know if Edwards or Dean ended in debt or if Kerry helped them. It likely would be a good gesture to publicly take over the debts to all the small businesses that have been left unpaid. That would generate good will in the states where they live.

15. Hold your horses, not as controversial as you think
Frontrunners commonly do this. They often send out e-mails to their supporters and donors asking them to help chip in to the other candidate's debt. Much different from Obama just handing over donations to his campaign to Hillary's campaign.

17. Yes, it cannot be done out of pocket. Obama would tap his fundraisers, not the ordinary donors.
It is a common practice, but considering the massive red ink of the Clinton campaign (and how she is using the money against Obama), the whole concept is rightfully causing heartburn.

HOWEVER - please do not let any regular donors to his campaign worry about this at all, it wouldn't be coming from any of your donations.

Normally, Obama would make personal, straight up appeals to certain donors and certain fundraisers for very direct funds for specifically this purpose.

In a previous presidential campaign I rec'd a similar request (I was maxed out to the candidate already). The candidate asked me to contribute an amount to help retire the campaign debt of a particular former rival as a gesture of goodwill, in the interest of unity, and also to demonstrate MY candidate's strong donor base loyalty in response to their request.
I did, and I made the check directly to the former rival's suspended campaign.

It would never come from general campaign funds.

21. How do you know this? If it's not illegal, it's still a possibility....
...I appreciate your experience, but I am still concerned.

Obama needs to make a statement on this. We're holding off donating any more until we hear from him what is going on.

Especilly since Hillary continues on in her delusional efforts, racking up even MORE debt.

22. No statement is needed
because it's hysteria over nothing. Do you honestly think that Obama is thinking it's a great idea to fork over money to the Clinton campaign when he needs it for the general election. In politics what is almost ALWAYS done is that the frontrunner will send out a few e-mails asking for his supporters to chip into his opponents debt in exchange for that supporter campaigning for them for the election. You'll get an e-mail in August or September asking you to chip in $10 to help out Hillary. Some will donate, some won't. It's really that simple.

24. It's not "hysteria." It's legitimate concern. It's up to Obama to address it or not....
Until he addresses it, however, then we (husband and I) won't be donating to the Obama campaign.

I hope you understand that I'm not going to take the comments of a random poster regarding what is "usually" done and then assume it will happen in this case.

Perhaps Obama doesn't need our contributions, and that's cool, too.

It's a minor issue - Fighting McCain is the real deal.
