It's official, Senator Clinton has lost....
...her fucking mind. Words fail me: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

(CNN) — In what appear to be the New York senator's most blunt comments to date regarding a racial division in the Democratic presidential race, Hillary Clinton suggested Wednesday that "White Americans" are increasingly turning away from Barack Obama’s candidacy.

"I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on," Clinton said in an interview with USA TODAY.

back. Rachel Maddow was the only right one. Hilarity will go out badly. KO will have to concede to her especial brilliance. Unfortunately.

last part of conason's column:

The Iran experts chosen by Clinton to counsel her campaign think not. Their well-informed and not terribly surprising assessment is that when we talk about wiping out Iran, the mullahs feel a more urgent need for nuclear weapons (and a stronger impulse to drive us out of the region). She has brushed off their analysis, just as she disdains the consensus of economists against the gas tax holiday advocated by her and McCain.

Voters who might consider supporting her have confronted this Clinton conundrum more than once. Does she believe what she is saying, or is she saying what she believes we want to hear? Which is worse?

2. Clinton: “West Virginia is a Test”
Clinton: “West Virginia is a Test”

The New York Senator hangs on to the results of next week’s contest, suggests the race in the state will speak to either candidate’s electability.

Says in Charleston: “Because for too long we have let places like West Virginia slip out of the Democratic column and you know it is a fact that no Democratic president has ever won the White House since 1916 without winning West Virginia.”

Also dismisses pundits counting her out saying “this is a bit like deja vu all over again” citing her New Hampshire, Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania wins. Permalink

Obama will hit the Pelosi number, Nancy will cut lose her troops, and this will be done and done.

They'll help her into her nice white coat (the kind with the sleeves that tie in the back) and they'll drive her to a happy place in a rubber truck.

56. This is clearly her "West Virginia Strategy"
She's tacking toward what she perceives as a strong regional racism.

Just like she played up the low education ("non-elitims" in her "base voters" since Ohio.

West Virginians, prove her wrong. Call friends, neighbors, whatever it takes.

Show the nation this perception of your state is wrong, and go with the future,

Obama 08!

3. Worse than Obama's "bittergate" by about 100 miles of bad road
http://blogs.usatoday.com/onpolitics/2008/05/whats-new-4.html

Update at 8:45 a.m. ET: The political blogosphere -- particularly the liberal side -- is starting to react to Clinton's comments. Pam Spaulding at Pam's House Blend calls Clinton's words "race-baiting."

ELROD at The Moderate Voice says it was "an appalling gaffe that goes well beyond (Barack Obama's) Bittergate comment." The Jed Report writes that "Clinton is making these comments to get attention. Her campaign is broke and she needs free media. She knows that the press loves to cover conflict, especially this kind of conflict. She's serving up raw meat on a platter, consequences be damned." Memeorandum has more links.

Update at 10:55 a.m. ET: Jerome Armstrong at the liberal MyDD.com thinks Clinton's comments were benign as far as race goes, but many of the commenters at his site apparently disagree.

And there never was an institutionalized precedence in this country of black people publicly shunning white people in the workplace, media, and politics.

But whatever. You can equivocate to your heart's content.

It is a shame that the candidate herself actually making race-based appeals to get votes. How divisive and pathetic. My husband, who is not a US citizen (so he is watching this from the sidelines), thinks the Clintons are the caricature of a washed-up Vegas show. They are becoming a joke to people both in the US and in other countries.

None of them would ever win another election.

25. You understand that she's now running on racial divisions, right? Her only hope
is apparently to convince white people that they won't vote for Obama in the fall, and then point to that as a reason for SD's to abandon Obama. What an awful, awful thing to campaign on. Obama's speech was all about tearing down divisions between the demographics and becoming one America, and she's running on pushing TWO Americas. I don't see how you can continue to defend her now, unless there's something truly wrong with you.

Like I said, I'm not buying into the hysterical bullshit. She's saying she has a broader coalition because of the margin of working-class whites that the Obama supporters here regularly denigrate as 'uneducated', racist, and republican.

and can't be reasoned with. What I say on DU doesn't matter. What SHE says to a national newspaper matters, for this primary and for November. She shouldn't have proclaimed her special appeal to white folk--it's that simple. Even if it's true, even if it helps her, she should be better than to use race like that. Shameful.

50. This cartoon says it all.
I don't know what she is thinking. It's beyond her losing now and more about the rest of her political career. She is going to end up being laughing stock.

71. Hillary
You know, responses like these are what makes me proud to be a Democrat. I have always appreciated the Democratic tendency to compassion, forgiveness and caring. Bill Clinton was one of the best presidents we ever had and his wife was a woman to be admired. After this primary season, I think I am leaving the Democratic Party, Populism looks good to me and I think Lou Dobbs would be a great. I have a very bad taste in my mouth for Obama after reading the hate filled shit that is prevalent on this site. I have listened to the "Messiah" and I have yet to hear him offer any specifics as to how he will bring about change.

I suspect that if he does get elected, his administration will be a disaster and will taint the Democratic Party for 20 years. Of course, I cannot vote for McCain, so I will vote for the Green or Populist candidate and hope for the best. If the comments I have heard on this forum is typical of Obama supporters, I don't see how we can recapture social and economic justice for the downtrodden.

Your reaction proves my point. No discussion, no debate, just fuck off. Well, same to you and your Messiah.

I didn't realize you wanted to do more narcissistic whining about not getting your needs met. :eyes:
Not many of us have had our political needs met lately.

Have you thought of backing Hillary? She needs your support.

70. If the elite cant have their first pick, Clinton, she must destroy...
Obama enough that the elites second pick, McSame gets in the oval office. Thats why she has been running such a negative campaign, she saw that Americans weren't buying the typical politicians lies and were leaning to Obama for the hope of real change, so they went on a negative campaign to make sure McSame wins. They cant let the people win, that just wouldn't be good for their agenda.

72. Seeing as she can't win the nomination,
anything she or her surrogates say that is negative about Obama at this point is an act of working against the Democratic party.

PERIOD.

73. Obama is losing the support of *hard-working Americans* too, dontcha know!
How does Hillary Clinton win the nomination:
"Well Kathy you know there was just an AP article posted uh that found how Senator Obama's uh support among um working, uh hard working Americans, uh White Americans, is um weakening again, uh and how, uh the you know Whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me, and in, in Independents um I was running even with him, and and doing even better with Democratic-leaning Independents. I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on."

82. Hillary Jones and the Primary of Doom (the rope bridge scene)
Edited on Thu May-08-08 02:08 PM by Goodnevil
Hillary Jones: "Bill!"
Clinton shouts to Bill in Chinese. Bill Round, wide-eyed, nods and wraps a rope around his arm
Bill Round: "Hang on people, we going for a ride!"
Hillary raises her sword, and the Democratic Party realizes what's about to happen
Democratic Party: "Oh... my... God! Oh my God... Oh my God..."
Democratic Party: "Is she nuts?"
Bill Round: "She no nuts, she's crazy!"
Hillary Jones: "Obama! Prepare to meet McGovern... in Hell!"

83. WTF, is this the "pandering to white trash" strategy?
I don't know what she is thinking. She'd probably put on a KKK hood if she thought it would win her the nomination.
