The fact that a state with a racist reputation like Indiana did not take the Rev. Wright trash was a great moment in American political history.

13. ...Noooooooope, it's not.
According to the census.gov, in 2006 8.9% of IN was black.

Now unless it jumped up 10% in 2 years, you're just pulling numbers out of your ass.

The blacks had the higher turn out. Also, almost all Indiana's blacks are Democrats - the same is NOT true of whites.

You are saying it's double that.

Has there been a mass influx of blacks into Indiana in the past 9 years?

19. The turnout of blacks in the Indiana Democratic primary was 18%.
Edited on Thu May-08-08 12:41 PM by NJSecularist
When you consider that very few blacks vote Republican, I think 18% is what the turnout should have been expected to be.

20. When you consider that it was an open primary, in which the numbers were diluted by many
independents and Republicans, 18% is a very high turnout indeed. It's a good thing to see.

9. To be accurate it is 49.89% of the vote in the primary
Question?

Haven't we really had 50 primaries or caucuses if we count all of them
including the overseas vote, Virgin islands, Guam ETC?

50-56?

21. the relevant number is the percentage of AA voters in the primary
if we're talking about primary results.

According to the CNN exit polls, 17 percent of the voters in the primary were AA. THey supported Obama 89/11. FOrty percent of white voters in the primary supported Obama.

As for the suggestion that Obama has inspired AA voters to turn out in greater numbers, that's likely, but impossible to actually prove without a comparison to previous years.

The following example will illustrate why its not necessarily the case. Assume that there are 1000 registeredvoters in Indiana. Half of them vote in the Democratic primary. Nine percent (90) of the total registered voters are AA and 95 percent (85.5) of those AA voters are Democrats. Out of the 500 registered voters that cast ballots in the Democratic primary, 17 percent are the AA voters.

34. Look at the states Obama has won.....
Edited on Thu May-08-08 03:12 PM by tpsbmam
It's bullshit that whites won't vote for him. Though, to be fair, I don't think that's what most have said. They HAVE generalized to say that working-class whites won't support him, which I also think is bullshit. No, some won't. But just because HRC was their first choice doesn't mean "they" won't vote for Obama. Just look below -- Vermont & Connecticut (e.g.) are significantly majority white and had primaries. I know the voters in those states don't count because they're small states, but all of the results below (including caucuses!!) belie that argument.

State & percentage of population considered caucasian (I personally think 99.9% of us are mixed, but never mind)

Iowa caucuses 91.5% white
South Carolina primary 65.5%
Alabama primary 69.3
Alaska 66.5
Colorado caucuses 72.1
Connecticut primary 75.4
Delaware primary 69.6
Georgia 59.6
Idaho caucuses 87
Illinois primary 65.8
Kansas caucuses 81.6
Minnesota caucuses 86.3
Missouri primary 82.9
Utah primary 83.5
Louisiana primary 61.6
Nebraska caucuses 85.4
Washington caucuses 77.1
Maine caucuses 96
Washington, DC primary 38.4 (2006) http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/11000.html
Maryland primary 59.2
Virginia primary 68.2
Hawaii caucuses 23.5
Wisconsin primary 86
Texas caucuses 49.2
Vermont primary 95.9
Wyoming caucuses 88.6
Mississippi primary 59.7
North Carolina primary 68

I've listed whether it was a primary or caucus to dispel the bullshit argument that in white states he wins only because they're caucuses (yep, I've heard a few people argue this).
