Poll question: Who should Obama Pick as his VP choice?
Personally, I say Obama should DEFINITELY pick a FEMALE running mate who is NOT HRC (she can personally be rewarded in some other way that doesn't threaten Obama's chances of victory).

My personal choice is Barbara Boxer, especially given her REALLY long resume and genuine strength on foreign policy and environment.
Some say Sebelius, or others.

What say you?

3. Richardson or Clark seem to be the strongest choices
If the country hadn't been brainwashed into FEAR TERRA FEAR TERRA FEAR TERRA for damn near a decade, things might be different. Foreign policy is something Clark and Richardson both have. Richardson also has international diplomacy, and Clark was the NATO commander, so he has the military background as well as international relations. Unfortunately, he's also embedded in Camp Clinton, though Richardson was once there himself.

Under different circumstances, I'd say go with a female governor, like Janet Napolitano, or possibly Sebelius. As much as I love Barbara Boxer, I have to repeat myself here, two senators on the ticket just ain't happening.

5. Kaine is my 1st choice
... I think he's a fresh name and is potentially attractive to disaffected evangelicals. He may also help deliver VA.

2) Jim Webb -- I know he's from the Senate, but he brings good anti-war credibility and Defense cred

3) Bill Richardson -- He'd be popular with Hispanics, he has gubanatorial experience, and he's an ex-energy Secretary

4) Hillary -- Peace, joy, love, unity -- that's what we Democrats are about ;-)

5) Wes Clark -- Good defense guy, good on TV

8. Jim Webb, without question.
Edited on Thu May-08-08 05:37 PM by Barrymores Ghost
A Southerner/Midwesterner (hails from Missouri), a Vietnam War hero and decorated Marine who graduated top of his class at Annapolis, lawyer, Emmy-winning former journalist, author, a fighter who kicked George Allen's ass, and a man who has some skin in the game where it comes to Iraq - his son is over there.

He gets you the military credentials without having an umbilical cord attached to the Clintons. This guy and Obama will make for a Democratic uber-ticket.

19. Jim Webb, without question.
Seconded, for the same reasons Barrymores Ghost mentioned. In addition, Senator Webb is a former Republican who served as Secretary of the Navy during the Reagan administration (Take that, John McCain!). His win against George Allen not only gave Democrats a majority in the Senate but put an end to Allen's presidential ambitions, thereby denying Republicans an opportunity to nominate a more viable candidate than McCain.

26. Thirded... Webb helps to neutralizes McLame's mil history, along with helping
with winning a potential swing state. Plus, Webb would make a very effective attack dog. All-around winner imo.

12. I care more about the policy than the sex
I know it would be good politics maybe and assuming there's a fit with a qualified one I've got no problem with it but I think sex or race should be the last thing we look at, a little bonus of sorts if it works out that way rather than a qualifier.

Boxer would be a decent choice from my perspective, she's less militant than most though still a drug warrior I think so far from perfect. I'm not sure how much it would help the ticket given the "most liberal Senator" tag they've tried to hang on Obama. Richardson and a couple of others might be good bets too.

I'm not as fond of the Generals as some are and I certainly don't want Clinton. She'd drive away large parts of the independent and crossover voters Obama has attracted and energize the right about as much as her on top of the ticket would. Whatever benefit she brings seems more than outweighed by the baggage so I don't see her as anything but a burden. To the ticket and to the party, in this election at least.

15. RICHARD CLARKE!!!
Someone non-partisan with a TON of foreign policy experience.

This is NOT General Wesley Clark (who I also think would make a good choice), but instead the counter terrorism expert who served under Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Little Bush before being marginalized because he dared to suggest that Al Qaeda was a threat and Iraq wasn't.

18. Where are all the Barbara Boxer fans? Don't you see how this year we NEED a woman on the ticket?
And frankly, if I were picking among men only, neither Wes Clark nor Al Gore nor Bill Richardson would make my short list. Where is all the enthusiasm about Gen Clark coming from? He's barely even a Democrat -- barely a moderate Democrat!

I'd be VERY interested in hearing more about Gov Napolitano.

28. Why aren't folks here worried about Webb's anti-women writings?
As a Virginian, this really was what Allen's folks ran with virtually every day. Most Virginians got to know his "Women aren't capable of being in combat and shouldn't be there anyways" articles almost well enough to recite them.

Given the animosity from Clinton supporters, if Obama picks Webb and McCain counters with a woman, I do see some real doom coming our way...

If Clinton agreed, it would get out of the way the whole issue of winning over the Clinton supporters and allow Obama to focus on McCain. Without Clinton, the meme will be, Can Obama win over the Clinton supporters? With Clinton, the meme will be, Can McCain overcome Obama?

A lot of people seem keen on Sebelius or Napolitano, which both also might make sense given the executive v. senator factor.

I'm not sure gender should be the overriding criterion though, so I voted accordingly.
