You've been scammed, folks--not out of losing your money, but to stop you from giving it to Obama.
Obama Won’t Rule Out Easing Clinton Campaign Debt (Updated)Senator Barack Obama said today that he would not rule out the possibility of helping Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton retire her campaign debt...to unify Democrats. But he said no discussions have taken place...
“Obviously, I’d want to have a broad-ranging discussion with Senator Clinton about how I could make her feel good about the process and have her on the team moving forward,” Mr. Obama said. “But...it’s premature right now...(O)ur working assumption right now is that we’re still in the middle of a race.”
Hmm--if Obama actually SAID that he wouldn't rule out the possibility of helping Hillary Clinton with her campaign debt, shouldn't there be a DIRECT QUOTE to that effect?
Mr. Obama suggested today that there would be some precedent for helping erase her debt.
“I think historically after a campaign is done and you want to unify the party – particularly when you’ve had a strong opponent,” Mr. Obama said, “you want to make sure that you’re putting that opponent in a strong position so that they can work to win an election in November.”
That's a "suggestion"--really? LeBron James would sell his soul for the ability to make leaps like that! And now for the "update":
If Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton would happen to broker a deal to help pay off her campaign debts – this remains a big if, aides said, because nothing has been formally discussed – the money would not be taken from Mr. Obama’s campaign account. Instead, he would have to make a fund-raising appeal on her behalf, asking people to contribute.
The money WOULDN'T be taken from the primary funds? How about COULDN'T? According to this
Huffington Post article:
Obama cannot under federal law assume direct responsibility for Clinton's debts because that would amount to an illegal contribution, far above contribution limits.
There are, however, a number of other alternatives. Obama could, for example, send out a solicitation in Clinton's behalf to his own donors and to other donor lists, asking for contributions to be directed to her campaign. He could, in addition, hold a joint fundraiser with the money split between Clinton and Obama.
Well, if that's the case, there can be only one reason why this rumor was started: to get Obama supporters mad enough at him to stop sending him money. Obama's rising in weight class as he transitions into being a GE contender, and we have to do the same, because this is a perfect example of how much dirtier the tricks are going to get. Stop and think: given the vital role that "little people" contributions have played in Obama campaign, do you REALLY believe he'd hand some of "our" money to Hillary without caring what we thought? If he were that overambitious or just plain stupid, he wouldn't be where he is today!
