Theory: What happens after Clinton wins West Virginia.
We all know Hillary is going to win West Virginia by a huge margin. My theory is the following:

* During her victory speech she tries to paint herself as the comeback kid.

* The day following her victory in West Virginia, there will be a big Obama news conference and John Edwards will endorse him, thus knocking the "comeback kid's" news coverage off the front page.

----

I base this theory on the following:

1. Hillary has to shift the momentum and news coverage in her favor. She has to use the big win in her favor and it's the only card she has to play at this point to try and convince everyone she is still relevant.

2. John Edwards was sent out this past week in a tease to the media. He's already selected a candidate to endorse, he's already voted, and it's pretty obvious who he supports. There was no reason for him to strut back out in front of the cameras other than to throw his name back into the news cycle. I can see this as a strategic move by the Obama campaign.

1. I disagree about the Edwards thing
You're right about the first part, but I dont think Edwards will endorse. Instead, Obama will roll out supderdelegates in double digits.

7. Maybe, I certainly believe he has tons in his pocket.
However, I also believe Edwards is one of them. There was no reason for Edwards to be back out in front of the camera a few days ago other than to create buzz. He had nothing to announce, nothing to say, and it was obvious that the media would be only interested in one thing: Who he was endorsing. He refused to answer, and that was pretty much the only thing he talked about. He didn't even hardly touch on his work outside of politics.

I just think it was a strategic move by the Obama campaign, to create buzz right before the announcement. On Morning Joe he plainly stated that he was going to endorse the person he voted for, which means he's already made up his mind. So if he's made up his mind, then why hasn't he endorsed unless he was asked to be silent and wait until the right time?

12. Why hasn't he endorsed? His wife that's why
SHe's for Hillary. He probably needs to wait until delegates/superdelegates have formally bestowed the presumptive nominee title on Obama before he will make his Obama endorsement public. Some kinds of trouble you will chew your own arm off to avoid.

21. dunno, I kind of doubt that the obama campaign has much control
because if they did, wouldn't it make more sense to ask him to campaign day and night in WV and kentucky? He'd be a perfect advocate for barrack there.

22. I dunno, Meldread...

Edwards, the son of a coal miner, is going to wait until Hillary takes West Virginny by 94 points and then he's going to endorse Obama?

That should pretty much do it for the final dregs of his Southern street cred.

And while I'll be ecstatic, a passel of SDs bolstering Obama's position just as Hillary finally has some small, infinitesimal thing to crow about?

We'll never hear the end of it.

'Course they've got to endorse some time...

Think Obama will work out the FL/MI issue by Tuesday?

Damn there are gonna be fireworks if this happens!

27. I thought he was the son of a mill worker
Minor point though, right? West Virginia is an extremely backward state. I lived there for 8 years to "raise" my child, and then beat it back to D.C. There were zero African-Americans living in the small town to which I relocated. It was an extremely conservative, impoverished area. It comes as no surprise West Virginia is favored heavily in Clinton's favor. Most people there would be reluctant to gravitate toward anyone or anything new .... I had a difficult time being accepted by the natives there, who regarded me as a "city slicker" ....

Son of a mill worker. And you're right, my point was white, blue-collar background.

I've heard that the state is a little insular.

3. Hil wins WV big, but she still isn't the Dem nominee. That is my prediction.
As for anything else, I'm really just kind of winging it.

I do think that Edwards ad a few others will be forced to step in if Hil gets too crazy after WV. After last week's racially charged comments I am not thinking there is much acceptance left for Hil and anything too crazy coming out of her mouth. If she gets too far off the deep end I think the SD numbers for Obama will probably skyrocket pretty fast.

I could be wrong. Like I said, i'm winging it.

4. How is winning one state proof of ANYTHING, I'd like to know?
Each state is remarkably different than the rest. And as we all know by now, the most states, and most delegates, and the most voters, want Barack Obama to be the nominee.

What's so difficult about this?

11. Like my3boyz said it's all she has to cling too.
It's a marketing tactic, really. She has to create the perception that her candidacy is still viable. Therefore, she'll point to her huge victory in order to energize those in the remaining contests to come out and vote for her in order to drive up her pledged delegate count. Meanwhile, to Super Delegates she'll be telling them, "See! Obama can't win those hard working white folks just like I said."

So in a nutshell her goals are two fold: To create hope in her supporters, and to create doubt and fear in the Super Delegates.

She also needs some positive news coverage, and she's hoping that will swing to her favor.

9. CBS radio news said she will quit the race after WV
They stated it came from 'insider' information. I heard
it 2 hours ago coming back from the park in my car.

I went WTF? I hope it is true, but doubt it.

14. I doubt it's true as well.
Hillary is going to stay in this race at least until Florida and Michigan are seated. If she can find another reason to stay in the race after that, she will. She's likely to stay in until Obama reaches the "magic number". However, even then I wouldn't be shocked to hear that Hillary is still working on the Super Delegates behind the scenes. She isn't going to give up hope until all those votes are formally cast and locked-in at the Convention.

16. Get ready! Hillary and her supporters are about to embark on yet another emotional roller-coaster.
Edited on Sat May-10-08 08:25 PM by Arrowhead2k1
They're gonna be just sooooooo happy, and think they really really really have a chance! They'll be rubbing the results in our faces like they just pulled off this HUGE triumph towards the nomination. But then, as the hours go by, reality will begin to set in yet again. To their shock, most in the media won't be spinning their way, and the superdelegates will not be swayed. Before they know it, they'll be facing May, 20th. The day Obama effectively locks this up. The rest will become history.

It's gonna be fun! :D
