July 31, 2004 - Greensburg, PA

Tell Gallop to go stick their polls. No one's home because they're all out supporting Kerry.

16. Rally in Scranton PA
Ok, this is now my second post! Still trying to figure things out. I just wanted to give everyone a first hand impression of the rally I was at on Friday.

Hello everyone-
My very first post. I attended the Kerry-Edwards rally in Scranton PA on Friday. WOW!! A long, hot, sweaty day---worth every second. The crowd was huge, supportive, and enthusiastic. This was my first ever political rally and one I will never forget. I was a little disappointed with our location, would have liked to have been closer but it seems that everyone else felt the same way. This team seems to draw people to them. We were lucky enough to weasel our way closer to the action after the speeches. Elizabeth and Teresa were feet away and very much involved with the crowd. They were wonderful. The Johns were a little farther away but took the time to sign autos and shake hands. I actually got chills even in the sweltering heat. How anyone can say John Kerry is aloof is beyond me! He was warm, funny, and quite the silver fox!

The crowd was quite a mix of people. One thing that my friend and noticed was a large amount of younger people. They were pumped to be there. That is great sign because this area has a population of about 20% 65+. A lot of vets, a lot of union folks, a lot of people who strongly want Kerry-Edwards to win in Nov.

Huge hand-made signs were posted on the interstate overpass. The campaign must have been thrilled. Estimates of the crowd numbers range from 15,000-20,000. Local news going with the number of 17,000. From some locals who have been around, "numbers like this not seen since Kennedy in the 60's"

Just thought I would pass this info along from my part of the world.

My next step-I believe I will voluntary.

18. Dean got large crowds in 2003 before the primaries, but that
didn't translate into a winning the Primaries, so do these large crowds bode well for Kerry?

25. Sorry to burst your bubble, but 25000 is
less than 0.13% of the state population. We need
a huge turnout on election day to actually vote.
It is both boring and tedious, hardly the party atmosphere
at a typical rally, on election day.

26. Not to rain on your parade, Shivaji, but
Grand Rapids is also just one tiny part of the very large and populous state of Michigan. Did you expect 50%+1 of the entire population of the state to show up? Sheesh.

This rally was in the middle of the work day, not on a week-end. In the middle of the day in the middle of a midwestern summer. Hot. Humid. Sticky. Miserable. ("Sultry," I think is the word I'm looking for.) No refreshments, no seats, no shade. This is support. This is unity. This is solidarity.

Do I take this to mean we can just quit and go home now, with the election victory in the bag? No, not at all. But it's good to see thousands upon thousands of people coming out to show their support. We do them a disservice by not acknowledging that. We do them a further disservice if we don't support them in turn.

I don't hear Howard Dean saying, "Well, I had big crowds at my pre-primary rallies, too, but I didn't win." I think the former Dean supporters who may or may not be fueling this so-called "caution" ought to take a cue from their candidate, who seems to have thrown his support fully and enthusiastically behind the nominee.

31. Many of Dean's supporters don't like Kerry
so while most of us will hold our nose and vote for Kerry, we'll put our energy and money with candidates we can support at the local, state, and Congressional level. Dean did tell his supporters that if they can't support Kerry the way we did him to find a candidate that we can support. Dean understands his supporters and accepts that many of us will not be enthusiastic about Kerry, so Kerry fanatics get use to it.

33. Not all Dean supporters here were real Dean supporters. Most were sincere.
Some of the less mature are having difficulty with reality, but, a few were GOP operatives here to foster dissent and work against Kerry. Much like the media. The media created much hype around Dean, but, internal state polls showed he never had the higher poll numbers that the media reported.

27. You're not bursting any bubbles
Really? So what's your point? It may be 0.13% of the state's population, but it's only 0.0000000000001% of the world population. should we only be impressed if more than 50% of the state's population turns up?

I think 0.13% of the state's population turning up at a campaign rally is pretty good actually. It might be more meaningful to talk about the relationship between rally turnout and election turnouts, but you're simply confusing the two. If you want to do that, you should atleast use the population of the city. The way you do it is pretty negative.

32. They create optimism and help keep the faith...
But translating these crowds into electoral success is as you suggest...iffy. But they are certainly a better sign than sparse crowds ;-)
