Clinton continues as the preferred choice as Obama's running mate, with 39 percent of Democrats saying they'd like him to pick her if he's the nominee. That peaks at 59 percent of African-Americans, 47 percent of Clinton supporters and 42 percent of women (vs. 34 percent of men).

There's also an indication that Clinton on the ticket would be a slight net plus in the general election: Among all Americans, more say having her run with Obama would make them more likely to vote Democratic (25 percent) than to vote Republican (18 percent). The rest (54 percent) say it wouldn't make a difference in their choice.

<snip>

(Emphasis supplied.) It turns out that the only people against a Unity Ticket are Ted Kennedy, Mark Cohen and Creative Class bloggers. Obama's strong African American base want unity as do Clinton supporters. The divisive ones are people like Kennedy, Cohen and the Creative Class bloggers. I must admit I feel vindicated by this finding.

27. Here is my problem with your response (which I personally agree with)
When Clinton supporters were oblivious to the numbers we chastised them for it. The fact is that much to my surprise there are still critically important states where Clinton polls very well - IN OH FL PA.

One way or another we are going to address the 'Clinton' problem either by appointing her or one of her surrogates. If Clinton supporters are willing to accept Obama then we must be willing to consider Clinton.

Does this mean that I am in favor of it - Not yet.

But if she turns in a great concession speech

If she turns out to be the greatest Obama supporter in America

If she starts dispensing Kool Aid at every stop

Yes I would consider her. Lets keep an open mind on it.

Dispense the Kool Aid. Live, breathe, eat, drink, and sing Barack Obama for President across the country and maybe all will be forgiven.

67. if the glove fits . . .
Obama's already had to breach some strange political alliances during his short career; Hill won't sully him. I think Hill wants change as well. Still, she'd have to embrace her superior's philosophy and accept his management style. Why would any prospective employee (particularly one who's made over $100 million in the last four years) accept a position where she won't fit in? Why would the employer hire her?

"Ruins Obama's whole message that gay people aren't really people," then you're right.

Obama's got to pick a VP who can soften his image toward the constituency that vote Democratic more than any other.

If people see a list with Hillary Clinton on it and a bunch of other names they don't know very well, they're more likely to choose Hillary.

I'd bet that 41% against her are REALLY against her. Could you also interpret this as 41% of blacks wouldn't vote for Hillary if she was the nominee?

Bill did one damn good job in helping to ease tensions around the world and would be a great asset as an adviser. He is not a moron and could do a great job as an unofficial member of the State Department.

He is a brilliant man why would we want him sitting in a corner somewhere?

What particularly bothers me is the pushy habits of an old bull.

I'd expect he'd be much like the also finger waiving TR was to the Taft administration.

By the end of the second year of an Obama administration we'd have two hostile camps not just inside the party but inside the administration(!) both competing for the presidency, with at least one of the camps employing the same sort of kitchen-sink strategy we've been witnessing.

It wouldn't be at all useful to repairing the damage done to the nation by the Cheney administration.

But I do believe it would be a hard ticket for McCain to beat.. Just the pure numbers of voters that are for Obama and Hillary would make it hard for the GOP to win..

19. My biggest problem is the implication of having Bill behind the scenes.
I don't think Bill would be content to have no involvement in the running of things and so, from a constitutional standpoint as well as a practical one, I worry.
There is no precedent for such a thing, but frankly the extra-constitutional authority that the current VP, Cheney has taken DOES set a precedent for further breaches of our system and general mayhem.

That's not even going into real shadowy speculation, such as the issue of putting the Clinton's in a position to take over in the event that something unfortunate happened to the POTUS... :scared:

I think Hill can keep her man in line. She may have problems with him straying, but somehow, I think (as VP) she'd pretty much be in charge of her household. It's her turn in that relationship. He's already made his impact on the world. But if they happen to find a spot for Bill . . .

Clinton lost the primary, but she garnered a massive amount of national support. 17 million votes is nothing to sneeze at, and while sure the majority will "come around", that is not the same as having active support.

She brings a ton of negatives for sure, but what other VP candidate brings 17 million voters?

Not saying its a lock, but its not something to offhandedly dismiss either.

Doesn't mean I wouldn't vote the ticket, but I'd most likely be less enthused to actively support the ticket by donating $$$ at every opportunity, and be all around less fired up. She's a divisive figure. Hillary on the ticket probably won't help Obama with a net gain at all. She may even end up hurting him with her antics.

Whatever Kennedy's personal life problems have been, he is an outstanding legislator, who has done more for the Democratic party than the two Clintons added together - and they have embarrassed Democrats as well.

This op has a problem - 60% of all Democrats don't want HRC

Edited on Mon May-12-08 08:51 PM by jenmito
First of all, Obama represents change-the antithesis of what the Clintons represent.

Secondly,if so many Hillary supporters would vote for McCain over Obama, I doubt a Clinton VP spot would change that if they have so much against Obama.

Thirdly, the Republicans would be energized to no end having the Clintons back in the game.

Finally, Obama could do much better by choosing someone that would bring in the same voters that Clinton would bring without the baggage.

If Obama's strong AA base wanted Hillary...

Why didn't they vote for her more in the primary? Obama at least was able to get some white votes. Hillary is lacking in black votes.

I guess AA were not really offended by Bill's racist comments in SC or Hillary saying working class white voters are more important.

So, everything will be pushed aside and nobody will care. If that is the case I feel sorry for AA.

without having to worry what schemes the Mayberry Machiavellis -- Bill and Hillary -- are hatching up in the VP's office, trying to cut him off at the knees.

He'd be nuts to let her anywhere near his campaign and that includes Denver.

to a single African American that wants HC anywhere near a ticket.

Of any age
In PA, MI,CA, VA
Any economic level

Not one.

When the campaign first started, I do remember hearing many say they were for HC.

And our Congresswomen ~ Maxie Waters and Diane Watson are for her so I know they are solidly behind her.

Other than that, NONE and I talk to a lot of people.

Just saying

56. The "Dream Ticket" equation as I see it:
Likely Dem Voters MINUS (Racists who wouldn't vote for a black PLUS sexists who wouldn't vote for a woman) EQUALS McHundredYears victory.

LDV-(R+S)=100v

60. Yeah great idea!
Take the politician with negatives second only to George Bush and chain her to Obama.

Yeah Independent voters are going to be thrilled with that ticket!:sarcasm:

All McCain will do is endlessly run the tapes of Hillay saying Obama is not fit to be President. I'm sure McCain would love that!

I can see why Hillary backers want that though. It would insure the defeat of Obama and clear the way for Hillary in 2012.

No f'n way Hillbots!

His message is to unite the country and moving forward
hers is divide and conquer and lets travel back in time.
roving bill in the house?
her HIGH NEGATIVES
despicable "hard working whites" comment
neo-con rhetoric against IRAN
"Mcain and i have a lifetime of "experience" ..Barack made a speech"
sniper fire dishonesty
etc...

I think he'll choose Webb or Clark to bolster experience and military cred vs Mcshame.

Edited on Mon May-12-08 11:00 PM by Triana
...'twood be a dumb move, IMO for that reason alone - not to mention the others.

For instance, her DIVISIVENESS where Obama has espoused bringing people together - again Clinton is the antithesis of THAT, too.

Seriously - after the disgusting way this madwoman has run her campaign, you want her helping to run the country? Or, you want her to take over if he is otherwise unavailable as Pres? I would think the spectre of that alone would discourage anyone from supporting such a cockamamie idea - let alone the fact that she is old-style politics, and the antithesis of change or togetherness.

99. That's fair.
I have always said that if the shoe was on the other foot, I wouldn't try to pressure anyone to vote for Hillary. That's why we live in a democracy, people have the right to vote for whichever candidate they prefer.

As it is, wild horses couldn't force me to vote for a person who I don't think is ready to be president. The only exception would be if she were also on the ticket.

100. Fair enough.
I'm a bit different. I'd be really unhappy with a unity ticket. I prefer a more seasoned VP with military and foreign policy experience. Sad part is there aren't many women in that position. I'm sure it will be a white male.

In addition, I don't believe for one minute the white male power structure will stand by and support a black man and a white woman as number 1 and 2 to run this country.

Those are the facts of our existence, I truly believe that.

It will have to be one, or none.

90. If it means party unity, count me in.
Party unity is important to me. If this really does further that cause, I'm all for it. I would view it as a compromise with people who have ideas I might not completely agree with but who are still democrats. It also seems it might help Obama to bridge the gap between his group and other factions within the democratic party.

However, I would not support this as the sole criterion examined. There would have to be other compelling reasons for this ticket to work.

98. There must be a helluva lot of Democratic bloggers
If 39% of Democrats want this "unity ticket", yet the ONLY people against it are Ted Kennedy, Mark Cohen and "the bloggers", wouldn't that mean that the Bloggers make up 61% of the Democratic Party? You may feel vindicated, but as Hillary says, I think you are making statements that you know not to be the case.
