The birth certificate mystery
Edited on Mon May-12-08 10:22 PM by Onlooker
So Obama and McCain won't release their birth certificates.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/05/citizen_mccain.html

"The McCain campaign has declined to publicly release his birth certificate, but a senior campaign official showed me a copy. Contrary to some Internet rumors that McCain was born outside the Canal Zone, in Colon, the document records his birth in the Coco Solo 'family hospital.'"

So McCain allowed people to see his. Why won't Obama show his birth certificate? I would presume if his citizenship is in question it would have already been investigated when he got elected to the Senate, if not sooner. After all, to be a Senator, you have to be a citizen. Also, I would guess to get security clearance, the FBI must get access to personal records, such as birth certificates.

So, that leaves the one other rumor, that he has another middle name. He's denied that and there's no evidence to suggest he does have two middle names:

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/464/

So, that leaves the question, why won't he release his birth certificate? I realize that many will see this as flamebait, but I don't believe Obama has anything serious to hide in this regard. I can't imagine what could be on a birth certificate that would be that damning. And I can't see why a bunch of liberals, who in theory believe in open government, would get defensive on this issue.

Does any Obama supporter (and I'm one too) have any idea why he won't release his birth certificate? It would be nice to see a common sense answer.

1. oddly enough, birth certificates are used to get other documents - fear of identity theft?
It's always baffled me that a piece of paper not linked to me by photo, fingerprint, or DNA serves as a proof of anything about my identity, but I don't write the rules.

5. I remember DU supporters did this to Kerry too
Where are his Navy records? Why doesn't he sign the release? What do the Purple Heart records say? Why would the swift boat veterans lie? Where there's smoke there's fire.

Why do we do this to our own candidates. I will never understand it.

10. Kerry released everything
He was slow in releasing some of his navy records, but ultimately released those too, and everyone wondered why he didn't release them sooner. I think it's okay to inquire about this type of thing in a progressive forum like DU. After all, knowledge is power.

149. He actually wasn't slow at all
From April 2004, he had over 100 pages on his web site containing everything except medical records - which he had open for a week or so to legitimate media. There were people on boards including the Kerry blog, who were vets and who went through them in detail and said that they seemed complete to them.

What you remember is that the Republicans STILL say that he hasn't released all his records. In 2004, some conservative blogs wanted the records given directly to them from the military. They were told that everything non-medical was on the site. The RW actually did go through those 100 plus papers - finding things like a typo on one form where a typist listed his two important medals as "bronze tar with valor, silver star with valor" copying "with valor" after silver star where it didn't belong. This led them to declare the silver star fake. As it was still a RW issue in 2005, Kerry did sign to let three newspapers get everything directly - the result - the records were exactly what he had on the web page plus one page he didn't have of his last Vietnam fitness report - a coversheet recommending him for accelerated promotion.

Your reaction was what the Republicans wanted. They knew Kerry was a war hero. Even before the SBVT, they want to create the impression that Kerry's record wasn't what people thought it was. Rather than let him have some veteran/millitary event where he could announce that his record (likely far less detailed - he had a summary the Navy wrote of his record in the 1980s at his request) was on the web site. Instead, they threw out non-specific accusations to make it look like Kerry was defending himself in putting his record out. (I'm expressing it badly - the idea was to suggest there were questions and that Kerry needed to answer them. Meanwhile, they lied and spoke of how Bush had disclosed more than anyone and was clean. Orwell would have been proud.)

The Republicans still play this and it is lose/lose. Kerry and friends have pulled together information to answer everything - Kerry is called obsessed with his record. Yet, the FRW on a weekly basis still make their claims that he hasn't released his records and still call him a traitor or worse. The facts are as they always were. The reason they are still an issue is NOT that Kerry was slow or didn't respond - but because there are people for whom the lies are still valuable.

170. No, he signed Form 180 in 2005
I happened to come across this the other day.

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2005/06/07/kerry_allows_navy_release_of_military_medical_records/

"The lack of any substantive new material about Kerry's military career in the documents raises the question of why Kerry refused for so long to waive privacy restrictions. An earlier release of the full record might have helped his campaign because it contains a number of reports lauding his service. Indeed, one of the first actions of the group that came to be known as Swift Boat Veterans for Truth was to call on Kerry to sign a privacy waiver and release all of his military and medical records.

"But Kerry refused, even though it turned out that the records included commendations from some of the same veterans who were criticizing him."

173. That's what I said
The article also says that every single document was on Kerry's web site as he said it was in 2004. That article - as many in the Boston Globe have done for decades - puts the information in the worst possible light for Kerry. All those commendations the BG alludes to were on Kerry's web site and were referred to by his better surrogates, such as Cleland and Clark. (Many Democrats were pathetic - ignoring a mountain of fact in Kerry's case, even though they strongly backed Clinton continuously in the 1990s with no supporting info). The media had all of this - in fact the Boston Globe had had it for years.

In 2004, he had all that information out and it was complete and none of the documents were ever called fraudulent. The call to sign the 180 was a far right wing attack that was designed to make it look like there were questions when there weren't. The fact is that after the 2005 release, they did not concede that Kerry was telling the truth, they STILL claim he never released it - because it went just to three newspapers. The fact that the combination of it going to the three newspapers and it being online for everyone to see for years on his website, together mean everything is out. Yet troll the right wing - especially on Tuesdays and there will be calls for Kerry to put his records out. Signing the statement would have helped nothing in 2004 and would have only led to more discussion and speculation.

?Did you follow what happened with Pickens He made a challenge on some RW show to pay a $1 million to anyone who could disprove anything said by the SBVT - Kerry was given a copy of what he said and wrote a letter saying he could disprove many things - but Pickens changed the offer - he wanted Kerry's journal, any tapes he had and other things - all of which had nothing to do with the original offer.

141. I thought the same thing - and the pattern was the same
Bush was being challenged because there were - and still are - gaps in his records and there were demands on him to release them. Kerry, on the other hand, had been a public figure for over three decades and even Nixon did not challenge his service, after investigating it. In April 2004, the SBVT first came out demanding that Kerry put out his records. Kerry's people quickly put over 100 pages of Naval records on his web site. The fitness reports - all glowing - spanned the entire interval and the comments were extremely good.

No one ever questioned the authenticity of the records posted - but challenged Kerry that he was still hiding something. They created elaborate lies to suggest that even with all of this - there was something not disclosed - because they knew there had to be something - I think because otherwise, they would have to concede that no matter what he did later, a liberal MA Seantor with connections to the social elite (like Bush - but it's ok he's Republican), was a real genuine war hero. Something their brains couldn't accept. What they did to make Kerry look defensive in putting out information - that he is rightfully proud of.

Here, in both cases - there is no culpability for either - they were innocent babies. But, even in 2000, there were questions as to what qualifies as "native born". The reality - that his dad was a high in the Navy serving his country and his mom was undeniably American should suffice - but the law is the law. It was answered at that time that the Canal Zone counted. I assume it was a Rove planted story that perhaps the hospital was outside the Canal Zone. Now, I would assume that the American military would have taken responsibility of issuing the appropriate birth certificate - even if the mother opted to have the baby at the nearby hospital. This lets people speculate.

Now, in Obama's case, there has never been a question - but he is "exotic". His dad was from Africa and he was born in what has to be our most exotic (and incredibly beautiful) state. Like with Kerry, there is no reason to assume that there is anything wrong, but they may feel that if they fish for things they might find it. What, I don't know. There's not much on a birth certificate and all the relevant pieces of information are known.

Edited on Mon May-12-08 11:16 PM by Catherina
Mother's name?

Father's name?

Sex?

Race of parents?

Birthplace of parents?

I don't see the insight except for astrological purposes and he has every right not to waste time on that kind of nonesense.

The first link I saw chlamoring for Obama to post his birth certificate online was at Daniel Pipe's Islamophobic site.

Sen. Obama's birth certificate should be posted in Wikipedia, in public domain view for all who vote.

So are conservative http://conservablogs.com/velvethammer/2008/03/05/wanted-barack-hussein-obamas-birth-certificate/ and more right-wing pro-Hillary blogs. The whole thing is silly. Obama's right to pay them no mind. If it's information they're looking for, they're better off snooping around in his passport file ;)

But they're not because they don't release them. Why? Because there is no legitimate need for them. And the same is true for Obama.

If you can explain why its necessary for Obama to release his birth certicate, but not necessary for any other candidate to release their birth certificat, then we can discuss this.

Otherwise, STFU.

Obama, sr had not even met his future wife when Hawaii joined the union. I was countering those implying that the "hidden" thing was that he was born earlier. Doing that would have meant altering all the dates of his life, his mom's and his dad's. Many of those dates being public ans available - concocting all this - after the fact for Obama - would be actually harder than I can start to believe --- and after all that the precedent set when Goldwater ran.

Why exactly is Obama being singled out when not one other Demcoratic candidate in history, as far as I can tell, has ever been asked to produce a birth certificate?

If we accept the assertion of every other candidate that they are a citizen, then why are you singling out Obama?

Seems like that's the relevant question.

It's a question of place of birth and the lack of PROOF that he was born in Hawaii, and the fact that he refuses to release his birth certificate.

Article II of the constitution. It's an issue - and the SCOTUS hasn't fully tested "natural born" for those purposes.

291. where is the "PROOF" that any of the candidates were born in the US?
Why single out Obama? Because he has siblings born elsewhere years later? Find one peson who knew Obama's mother who claims that she suddenly vanished from Hawaii -- where she went to school and undoubtedly had friends, neighbors, etc. -- and reappeared later with a child. If such a person existed, we'd have heard about it. But there is no such person. So Obama is entitled to the same presumption that his origins are as they've been publicly described just as all of the other candidates have been accorded the same presumption.

"Currently, Title 8 of the U.S. Code fills in those gaps. Section 1401 defines the following as people who are "citizens of the United States at birth:"

Anyone born inside the United States
Any Indian or Eskimo born in the United States, provided being a citizen of the U.S. does not impair the person's status as a citizen of the tribe
Any one born outside the United States, both of whose parents are citizens of the U.S., as long as one parent has lived in the U.S.
Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year and the other parent is a U.S. national
Any one born in a U.S. possession, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year
Any one found in the U.S. under the age of five, whose parentage cannot be determined, as long as proof of non-citizenship is not provided by age 21
Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is an alien and as long as the other parent is a citizen of the U.S. who lived in the U.S. for at least five years (with military and diplomatic service included in this time)
A final, historical condition: a person born before 5/24/1934 of an alien father and a U.S. citizen mother who has lived in the U.S. "

I bolded the relevant piece.

Hawaii became a state in 1959. They had been a U.S. territory since 1898.

U.S. territory = U.S.

Anyone born in the U.S. proper, in a U.S. territory or on U.S. land, such as an embassy or military institution is considered to have been born on U.S. soil. Barry Goldwater was born in the Arizona Territory before it became a state, so there is precedence there. And we all know about John McCain. He was born on a base in the Panama Canal Zone (then a U.S. territory) to American parents serving in the military.

The most intriguing example, and one few have mentioned, is the case of George Romney (Mitt's dad), who was born in Mexico in 1907 to American citizens. Romney’s grandfather emigrated to Mexico in 1886 with his three wives and children after Utah outlawed polygamy. Romney's parents retained their U.S. citizenship and returned to the United States in 1912. He ran for president in 1968.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural-born_citizen#US_presidential_candidates_born_outside_the_US

Obama, of course, was born in Hawaii in 1961, a few years after achieving statehood. Even if he were born in 1951, he'd still be a natural born citizen.

I am *honestly* interested in finding out if you, Tellurian, as the ranking "affiliate member" of hillaryis44.org at DU, know anything about the embedded, invisible links on hillaryis44.org webstite that have linked to:

  1. a hacked, Washington university server* that had embedded links to an online Canadian pharmacy site (RXNICE.COM) on hillaryis44.org's front page

  2. a hacked section of iprong.com (the current victim of hillaryis44.org's embedded link scam)

Please note, kind DU Reader, that if you click your right mouse button on the lovely pink background of hillary is 44.org, and use the "view source" menu option, you will find that there are embedded links to hacked pharmaceutical websites on iprong.com, all of the pages then redirect each subsequent request for various pharmaceutical keywords.

Here is a nice website that will let you "view source" for any website:

I don't speak dipshit, but here's my best shot:

click on the link above in the post you replied to.
scroll down about 20% down the page.

note that there are URLs to a site iprong.com with interesting names like cialis, alabama breast augmentation etc.

That site iprong.com was probably hacked along with hillaryis44.org...

note that all of the links point to an Online Canadian Pharmacy site: RXnice.com

Here is a link from march 13th on dkos:

Please Note Tellurian's unwillingness to address any of this.

Do they really like her, or do they just think she is the easiest to beat?

I'm tired of the Hillary Obama flame war that has been going on and we are tearing each other down and not focusing on what is best for this country, making sure the closest thing that McCain gets to the White House is on the guided tour. This is another distraction that is keeping us from the real issues, like jobs, the economy, education, the war in Iraq that was fought on fictitious pretenses and our infrastructure that is falling apart. Stop reaching for any piece of BS that you can find to bring down Obama you are only doing McCain's work for him.

112. For this, I won't argue. I will just say this:
In my 20s, I lost my birth certificate. I had no clue where it was. I needed it though, to get my driver's license (yeah, I was kind late on that). I looked until I was sure I'd never find it. I had no proof I was ever born. It was pretty depressing. I knew I was born, but I just couldn't prove it.

Eventually, one very well informed person told me about this place called "the courthouse" where I could go get a certified (not certifiable, like my brain) copy of my birth certificate that would count just like the real thing. So, after a trip and about a dollar fee fee (that's what I call fees they seem to charge for the sake of charging SOMETHING for SOMETHING cause you ain't getting anything free, even though your taxes already paid for it), I had my birth certificate (well, a reasonable facsimile).

Anyhow, my point is I knew I was born, but without that birth certificate, I was hard pressed to prove it to our government. They just wouldn't take "I'm here, ain't I?" for an answer. Apparently, being here is not enough proof a person was born. But the place called "the courthouse" can fix all that. Seems simple enough.

Question:
What do they need their birth certificate for anyhow?

Both Obama and McCain fill this bill. If Obama and McCain were born in US Terrirories, that's even better. No judicial decision has ever interpreted the Constitution to mean anything else.

I was born overseas of an American parent. One of my kids was born overseas while I was serving in the US Air Force.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been born overseas of American parents while serving in embassies and elsewhere.

We are all native born Americans and we can all become president.

203. Wrong. You don't even know why McCain can run do you? Has not to do with "one parent"
Has to do with the fact that Military bases are considered "American soil" no matter where they are. That's where he was born and so he is therefore a "natural born" citizen.

There is a mile of space between a citizen and a natural born citizen for the purposes of Article II of the constitution. If Obama was born on foreign soil he falls into a gray area not yet fully tested by the Supreme Court. Look the issue up. Read. Learn.

He could make the problem go away by simply producing a certified birth certificate. He's REFUSED to do that. Why?

And why does Obama have this "problem" when no other Democratic candidate has ever had this "problem"?

If there was a legitimate reason for singling him out, you might have a point. But there is no legitimate reason to demand to see Obama's birth certificate when a like demand has never been made for any other Democratic candidate.

Edited on Tue May-13-08 03:31 PM by onenote
His parents could be from the planet Pluto and he'd be a natural born citizen simply by virtue of being born in Hawaii.

Is there one person who has come forward to suggest that his mother was was not in fact a student in Hawaii when she met and married Obama's father and/or that she was not in Hawaii when Obama was born? One person?

Absent a credible suggestion that Obama's entire life history is a lie -- that in fact his mother wasn't living in Hawaii before, during, and for several years after Obama's birth, there is no more reason to ask for Obama's birth certificate than there is reason to ask Hillary Clinton or any other presidential candidate for their birth certificate.

If it is presumed that the birth and origins of the other candidates has been depicted truthfully by them, then there should be a similar presumption for Obama unless and until something other than total speculation or idle curiousity is presented to rebut that presumption.

240. Wrong? What did I say that was wrong?
".....Military bases are considered "American soil" no matter where they are..."

Where did you get that? Do you have a link? American Embassies are considered US territory. I never heard that about US bases. I have a child born on an American base in France. I registered her with the American Consulate when she was born. My citizenship is the source of her citizenship.

So please provide a link to the Immigration and Naturalization law that backs up your claim that American bases overseas are considered US territory..

You're on my list of really nice Hillary supporters. It's getting longer by the day. I started it to remind myself of how many good Hill supporters there are, because sometimes it can be easy to get all caught up in the stuff the very few not so nice ones post.

Thanks.

193. Obama was born on U.S. soil, the citizenship of his parents, or their attitudes towards the U.S.
is irrelevant to his citizenship. Being born in Hawaii, either before or after it became a state, is also irrelevant. He's a natural born citizen, by default, there is no question of this, same for McCain. The fact that people on this board are even questioning his citizenship credentials is atrocious and xenophobic in the extreme.

Edited on Tue May-13-08 01:51 PM by Solon
There are other records and witnesses to the birth, unless he was homebirthed without the use of a midwife. There would be doctors, nurses, hospital check in records, etc. If it was actually in question, then those who are questioning it would have went to the courts, not the media. This is simply a shit flinging expedition to see what sticks. There is nothing for him to hide, so why give in to stupid demands. Frankly, everyone who thinks this is a serious issue are xenophobic assholes.

None of them have released their birth certificates. Not one person with first hand knowledge of Obama's birth and early childhood has ever come forward to claim that Obama's mother was anywhere other than in Hawaii when Obama was born. Not one.

257. If the failure to produce documents means something's hidden...
What is Billary hiding by refusing to release Bill's presidential donor list? What are they hiding? Who is on that list and how much money have they contributed? Will we find Central American rich folk on that list? Will we find criminals on that list? Obviously, from the arguments here that a lack of documents equals sure guilt, I am left to assume the worst.

How long before people realize that Panmanian Juan is only here in the U.S. to free Noriega? If he becomes president will our national dish be Arroz con Pollo? Will he install a "Southern White House" in Colon, Panama?

(SARCASM alert. This concept was on another board and I thought it was hysterical, so thought I'd share here.)

Edited on Wed May-14-08 06:29 AM by onenote
if its like, constitutional, dood.

Bummer for you.

Every other presidential candidate enjoys a presumption that they meet the constitutional qualification. If you could produce one piece of credible evidence to support the notion that Obama wasn't born in Hawaii -- other than the fact that he has siblings that were born years later in another country -- if you could produce one person who knew Obama's mother when she was college -- who suggests that his mom suddenly disappeared from Hawaii around the time of Obama's birth -- then maybe there'd be some reason to clarify the matter by reference to external evidence.

But in the absence of any such evidence to rebut the presumption afforded every other candidate -- you're just spewing crap.
