6. The person who predicted an 80%-20% win was not Bill Clinton
Edited on Tue May-13-08 09:14 PM by Colin D Cops
CNN reported that:

"You think this crowd’s noisy?” said West Virginia Senate Majority Leader Harry Truman Chafin. “Just wait ‘til we win like 80-20.”

“We’ve got to give her a vote tomorrow of 80-20 or 90-10,” he added moments later.

A campaign spokesman quickly tried to downplay Chafin’s remaks, saying “We appreciate his exuberance, but we're pretty sure this race is going to be much closer than that.”quickly tried to downplay Chafin’s remark

There is something about Bill Clinton that makes his opponents make things up about him.

17. Another example
Let's suppose one of Childers' aides in Mississippi had said, "Childers can win 90% of the vote, but if few voters show up, it will be a loss for everybody".

Does this mean the aide predicted a 90% win for Childers? No. A point is being made that large victory margin would take the back seat to a win in a big-turnout contest.

It's no brain surgery.

11. Yes, an Obama supporter must have had his hand up Bill's ass and made him say
Edited on Tue May-13-08 09:19 PM by NewHampshireDem
Last week President Bill Clinton told a campaign crowd that ”all this stuff you are hearing about is an attempt to discourage you. That's what this is, pure and simple, hoping, 'Well, Hillary can get 80 percent of the vote in West Virginia', and if only 100,000 people show up it is not enough. But if 600,000 people show up, and you say, 'We want a president', then you will see the earth move.

"We gotta have your help and get the largest number of people to show up on election day. See all this stuff you are hearing about is an attempt to discourage you. That's what this is, pure and simple, hoping, well, Hillary can get eighty percent of the vote in West Virginia, and if only 100,000 people show up it is not enough. But if 600,000 people show up, and you say we want a president than you will see the earth move. You can do it."--Bill Clinton

13. Very misleading, and debunked
Edited on Tue May-13-08 09:23 PM by Colin D Cops
Clinton said that getting 80% the vote is useless unless a lot of people show up. That's why he mentioned the low 100,000 turnout.

What he said does not amount to predicting that she was going to win 80% of the vote.

It's like Obama saying, "I could win 100% of the vote in Oregon, but if 20 people show up, it's not a good thing".

Let me repeat the quote, and I'm sure nobody will interpret it as Bill predicting that his wife would obtain 80% of the vote:

'Well, Hillary can get 80 percent of the vote in West Virginia', and if only 100,000 people show up it is not enough. But if 600,000 people show up, and you say, 'We want a president', then you will see the earth move.

Some people purposely lose the ability to connect phrases in order to capture the meaning of what an opposing candidate says.

18. Sorry, he said what he said ... and, I have to admit, I don't have the same practice
re-interpreting my candidates words so that they mean something different (*cough* hard working white Americans *cough*) so that they mean something else. But, then again, Bill says millions of words each day, just like Hillary. :eyes:

Please explain to us the reasoning behind your conclusion that Bill Clinton predicted that Hillary would win 80% of the vote in WV.
Note that reasoning is not copy and pasting half an idea.

24. I know what he said, and we both agree on what he said
Edited on Tue May-13-08 09:42 PM by Colin D Cops
We both agree that he said "'Well, Hillary can get 80 percent of the vote in West Virginia', and if only 100,000 people show up it is not enough. But if 600,000 people show up, and you say, 'We want a president', then you will see the earth move.""

That's not a prediction. It's saying that an 80% with low turnout is not enough.

But you somehow interpret that as a prediction, which is very weird.

West Virginia
There is no question that Senator Clinton is going to win by huge margins in the upcoming primaries in West Virginia today and Kentucky next weeks. She has poured resources into both states and she, former President Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton have all campaigned extraordinarily hard there.

The Clinton campaign has already been touting their margins in these states – In fact, Bill Clinton said that Hillary can win West Virginia with 80 percent—and the West Virginia Senate Majority Leader said Clinton needs to win by “80-20 or 90-10.” And in keeping large margins in perspective, it is worth noting that, while Senator Clinton will win big in West Virginia, Barack Obama won neighboring Virginia by 29 points.

Even if the memo had not existed, the truth is that some people here tried to lie about it, and had to be corrected.

And here are more details in Hillary's page.

27. LOL!
The 'fact hub'!

It's sad when your campaign needs a place to explain that what Bill Clinton said isn't really what Bill Clinton said.

And all those years I defended Bill over that whole 'meaning of is is' flap. I weep for you, Bill, I really do.

28. I don't see how it's sad
If a person has a campaign and someone makes a false statement about it, that person needs to be corrected. It would be sad if the campaign website did not debunk the falsehood.
