When did you first realize that Senator Clinton was not the inevitable nominee?
There were two moments for me. When Senator Obama outshined her in such an amazing way at the Selma civil rights march anniversary in April of 2007. The second was when Senator Clinton gave the dithering answer about drivers licenses at the Philladelphia debate in October. Really it was all down hill for her from that point on. Thirdly, of course, was Iowa, but she had already lost the nomination by then.

The polls in early 2007 showing a tight race between HRC and Senator Obama were also a hint but then those polls widened into massive leads for Senator Clinton in the summer obscuring the fact that she wasn't inevitable.

1. When Hillary couldn't even be a "second" in Iowa
and she placed a distant third... to Obama and Edwards.

And his victory speech that night... I figured it was all over right then and there.

10. Same here. Before that, I didn't even want to pay attention.
It looked to be a depressing season. Boy, was I wrong, wrong, wrong.

3. When she said she was running.
Seriously, she was at the very bottom of my candidate list. I said way back then that she was too divisive for me to ever vote for her in my primary.

6. When she voted for Kyle-Lieberman
Before that she was on a glide path, but it gave all the other candidates something to hit her hard with. It changed the dynamics of the race and reinvigorated opposition to her, calling added attention to her earlier IWR vote. I actually think it might have been part of a deal worked out by the Democratic Senate leadership (who all supported K/L) in return for gutting the worst passages out of K/L but Clinton voting for a Lieberman bill was a kiss of death to her. She had a fight from then on out.

Honestly saying something like that before the polls are open is just begging to be taken out fast.

13. Except for incumbent VPs, frontrunners often lose Democratic Primaries
There are exceptions. Mondale was the frontrunner in '84 but he came very close to being upset by Gary Hart. Bill Clinton was the early frontrunner in '92 but then fell behind and then came back.

I figured Obama would give her a run for her money. But her lead did seem insurmountable at times, given that she was polling ahead of Obama in every state but Illinois.

14. I never believed she had a chance. I am, in fact, surprised she has
gone as far as this. The vote for the IWR, and not renouncing that vote or even trying to explain it away until 06, I knew would not go well for her.

Then, of course, she bolstered that vote with K/L.

If you are not going to draw in independents you CANNOT alienate the activist Dems. It's as simple as that.

Iowa. My 87 year old dad proclaimed, "This guy may be the one we've been waiting for!" He then studied his writings, and plans, and set out to convince the whole family to support Obama. And he succeeded. hehe

when Obama gave his speech at the 2004 convention.

Saw he was at the Harkin steak fry in 2006.

And then came Iowa.......

25. When Bill Clinton stepped on it by his impersonation of Lee Atwater during the SC Primary.
I knew then that "the Clintons" would stoop to any basal level in order to score a third term in the WH.

26. I never thought she was. The media wanted us to believe that and I have learned to distrust them a
long time ago.

This said, it was always clear to me she would be a strong candidate and the candidate to beat.

27. When I heard Kerry was quietly using the national network he had already set up for Obama to
access.

The only way Clintons could have bettered that was to succeed in getting Dean pushed out at DNC so they could use it for their own agenda as they had in the past. When their efforts failed, they had nowhere near an effective organization to match what Kerry had in place from 2004 and connected with Obama's growing appeal.
