Peggy Noonan on Obama and the Destruction of the GOP
Excerpted:

I spoke this week to Clarke Reed (R) of Mississippi, one of the great architects of resurgent Republicanism in the South...

Is the Republican solid South over?

"Yeah. Oh yeah." He (Clarke) said, "I eat lunch every day at Buck's Cafe. Obama's picture is all over the wall."

http://online.wsj.com/article/declarations.html

Their jig is up. Sadly, we could not capitalize in 2004. But now they are in even worse shape. And they know it. Obama should win in a landslide. And our majorities should increase at the same time.

2. The GOP is dead because of Bush. Nevertheless, Obama will not sweep the South.
No Democrat could do that. Georgia and Virginia are longshot maybes. That's it.

3. The imporetant part is not sweeping it
But being competitive in it. The fact that the notion of GOP safe seats is crumbling points to good things to come. 2008 doesn't have to be the date when it happens. 2008 is the tipping point.

4. Yep
Rather than our states being in play, now its the other way around. The GOP has to fight for every inch. We are in good shape.

5. For the first time in two decades, we've paid attention to the South, so our
inroads are incredibly impressive. Thank you Dr. Dean.

10. Johnson said the Dem's would lose the South for 2 Generations
That era indeed seems to be coming to a close. I am glad we didn't keep the old strategy. That would have pushed us to 3 or 4.

8. But if we can take the battle there
Then that is less money for them to spread their lies in the rest of the country. Once we can prove to the people of the south that Republicans have been robbing them blind and making the world more dangerous, it'll be easy to flip the rest of the country.

9. Virginia isn't such a long shot and North Carolina should be
in play as well. If this turns into a wave election - and it may - Democrats could start picking up states nobody would have guessed they would.

12. Not to mention SC.
and even if we don't win them, LA and MS aren't as far off as people think--especially with a good ground game.

16. WE need to see how the character of this election develops, I'm not willing
to write anything off out hand. I think the old 50%+1 maps of red and blue states are just that - old and out of date.

If the Democrats come together - as I think they will - and contest everywhere against a Republican party that has absolutely failed this country; we can do quite a bit more than people that are framing this race in 50%+1 terms think we can.
