MILWAUKIE, Ore. -- Concerned about appearing presumptuous or antagonistic towards Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama will not declare victory in the Democratic nomination fight Tuesday in the event he wins enough pledged delegates to claim a majority.

Rather, he'll tiptoe right up to the line, without explicitly asserting the race is over.

While it may sound like an exercise in hair-splitting, the conscious decision not to declare victory is a revealing measure of the sensitivity surrounding overtures that appear to disrespect Clinton and her supporters.

It's also a reflection of the Obama campaign's supreme confidence in the delegate math at this juncture -- the campaign now appears secure enough in its commanding position that it no longer feels compelled to declare victory in an attempt to marginalize Clinton."

1. Once again, Obama gives Hillary a lesson in class
Maybe she'll catch on this time.

Eh, who am I kidding?

2. That's a good move. Obama has shown himself as a man of honor and decency throughout this campaign.
He will let Hillary make her decision in her own good time.

11. And it's pretty sad and pathetic....
...that Obama has to walk on eggshells this way, and doesn't even have the freedom to state the obvious. What the hell is our party coming to, when they can't even take a primary defeat with some semblance of class?

I mean, my candidate (Edwards) got his ass kicked long ago, but I didn't go around threatening to leave the party. Even if HRC won, I'd vote for her over McCain. WTF is the matter with people, so cultishly blinded by a candidate, that they can't accept defeat gracefully and support the party?

4. Good, I'm glad
I always thought if he was planning to declare victory that it was a bad idea. It would just piss off the Clinton supporters and if she did not drop out it would look arrogant.

6. Well, technically, he WON'T have won tomorrow--just clinched the delegate lead.

The race ISN'T over until somebody hits 2025, and that's what he should be concentrating on. So sit back and relax, Obama, and leave the celebrating to us little people who made it all possible!

P.S. What is Yahoo! doing hanging out with Politico? They've only been in business since the first Republican debates. How did politics' answer to TMZ get such lofty billing?

7. It's a shame he can't celebrate his hard fought victory
Still I appreciate the sacrificing he is making for the good of his campaign.

8. I want to celebrate the victory too.
What I want is for her to officially drop out and then I want to pop the champagne cork and let the streamers fly. Watch out for the Cant trust em Happy Dance.

15. too bad Hillary is never concerned about appearing presumptuous and antagonistic...
Of course, the worst of the Hillarites will ignore his tact. They might even find a way to feel insulted by it.

16. I know I'm new here but
I've always felt that the way to bring the most Hillary supporters over to our side was to let this go on till June 4th. After that point the holdouts will switch to either Obama or McCain. To end it early will look like we are snubbing Hillary and thus lose the remaining holdouts. But like I said, I'm new.
