6. Pressing the Clinton surrogate on race issues.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 08:22 PM by woolldog
Basically he called a large % of Clinton supporters who will vote for Clinton but not Obama in the GE racist.

Clinton surrugate demurred but he kept driving the point home, using exit poll data etc.

Clinton surrogate tried to pivot the discussion to gender discrimination and Matthews asked, when has your candidate spoken out against this kind of racism? She talks about gender but nothing on racism. Why doesn't she address it? It's a problem.

23. She Danced A Bit, But Didn't Deny
there's a racial bias in the Dem party. She seemed concerned, but on the other hand, they knew damn well this would be the case in KY. A win is a win no matter how you get there.

12. Yeah, he just laid it out there
and he is the only one who in the mainstream media who is willing to speak the unspeakable about the way people are hiding behind arguments about ability and experience as a deflection of their racial biases. He is also right that this is an old problem in the party we have to be willing to confront, but that the confrontation is made harder by Sen Clinton's continued fight, which is making the cleavages in the party ever more apparent.

people don't want to admit nasty thoughts like that.

Good for the Tweety.

And yes, this is a huge problem in the party. Clinton's only exacerbating the issue.

With his nearly perfect breakdown of the primaries based on racial composition.

I know it blew me away. :(

16. Okay, here it is...
Edited on Tue May-20-08 09:11 PM by Kristi1696
If a state is <6% African American, it has gone for Obama (with the only exceptions being NM and AZ, presumably due to Hispanic voters)

If a state is >6%, but <18% African American, it has gone for Clinton (only exceptions being states that border IL)

If a state is >18% African American, it has gone for Obama (no exceptions)

No other demographic (average income, average education, etc.) matches up. Only race. Pretty shocking, no?

ETA: Looks like lots of folks are looking at this, so I just wanted to point out that I may not be remembering the numbers perfectly. It may be <5% or 4%, etc. But I think the point still remains.

27. His analysis is kind of deceptive.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 08:55 PM by woolldog
I didn't care for his analysis because there's much more going on.

For example, Obama carried whites in CA, I believe. If not it was quite close.Same with New Mexico. Clinton won because of the hispanic vote is such a large part of the electorate. Plus CA would vote for Obama if the vote were now. I don't think Obama's loss had much to do with race. It was simply familiarity.

29. He admitted...
That it didn't hold for states with large hispanic populations.

It's entirely possible it's something he's overlooked. But it's not education, average income, etc., so I'm not sure what that *something* would be.

20. Based on demographics
Edited on Tue May-20-08 08:36 PM by BleedinHeart
States with black population of 4% or less, as well at 16% or more tend to go for Obama.

States in that magic area of 5% to 15% black population, with a little racial friction thrown in for fun, tended to go for Hillary - hence the west of Missippi hold Obama has while Clinton had a hold of the rust belt. South east for Obama - DC, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA, AL.

Interesting, but hopefully not the whole story. Hope it's not all about color...

edited to add: posted same time as one above - can't remember if it was 4 - 16 or 6 - 18.

I'm not sure, so prolly off.

But the precise numbers really don't matter. It's still mind-blowing.

21. It was excellent
I thought he would drop it and not go there. But he took it pretty far. At least until the Hillary surrogate had to sigh and say she hoped Clinton supporters wouldn't vote only for race. And then he pointed out that they told exit pollsters they did just that in Kentucky.
