CAMPAIGN 2004

Shame on the Swift Boat Veterans for Bush
John Kerry saved my life. Now his heroism is being questioned.

BY JIM RASSMANN
Tuesday, August 10, 2004 12:01 a.m. EDT

I came to know Lt. John Kerry during the spring of 1969. He and his swift boat crew assisted in inserting our Special Forces team and our Chinese Nung soldiers into operational sites in the Cau Mau Peninsula of South Vietnam. I worked with him on many operations and saw firsthand his leadership, courage and decision-making ability under fire.

On March 13, 1969, John Kerry's courage and leadership saved my life.

While returning from a SEA LORDS operation along the Bay Hap River, a mine detonated under another swift boat. Machine-gun fire erupted from both banks of the river, and a second explosion followed moments later. The second blast blew me off John's swift boat, PCF-94, throwing me into the river. Fearing that the other boats would run me over, I swam to the bottom of the river and stayed there as long as I could hold my breath.

When I surfaced, all the swift boats had left, and I was alone taking fire from both banks. To avoid the incoming fire, I repeatedly swam under water as long as I could hold my breath, attempting to make it to the north bank of the river. I thought I would die right there. The odds were against me avoiding the incoming fire and, even if I made it out of the river, I thought I'd be captured and executed. Kerry must have seen me in the water and directed his driver, Del Sandusky, to turn the boat around. Kerry's boat ran up to me in the water, bow on, and I was able to climb up a cargo net to the lip of the deck. But, because I was nearly upside down, I couldn't make it over the edge of the deck. This left me hanging out in the open, a perfect target. John, already wounded by the explosion that threw me off his boat, came out onto the bow, exposing himself to the fire directed at us from the jungle, and pulled me aboard.

32. Of course they know the truth
They did it because it wasn't looking good for Bush, Cheney and the gang. They have to make up lies because they don't know how to tell the truth. Too much money in it for them.
Thanks for this post.

John Kerry's my President!

5. Excellent!
I don't get how the Swift boat vets can support someone who not only avoided service in 'nam, but deserted. Then there's the matter of Cheney's multiple deferments because of those "other priorities." Kerry was in Vietnam, Jr. was snorting, and Cheney was in school. It doesn't make sense. But then, when did repuke logic ever make sense?

33. how do you know that's not just Rassman's name for them?
does anybody here have the actual article?

no way I'm paying money to read that swill?

does anybody have an actual quote from the site, showing the change in name?

I find it hard to believe that they'd do that.

hope it's true, mind you, but it leaves them SO open to just what's being said here

anybody?

He actually was one of the reasons Kerry was able to win IA and turn his campaign around.

Kerry risked his life to serve...and then he risked his life to SAVE another man's life.

Rassman is especially authentic because he has no political history and has had little if any contact with Kerry over the years.

Democrats understand the meaning of integrity and sacrifice and I think that's why Kerry was nominated (granted in all fairness Clark also saved people's lives in combat and Dean probably did as a doctor). Republicans could have easilly won the '00 election had they nominated McCain (I may not have voted for him but he has some sense of decency) but instead they wanted an AWOL crack head, all the while ranting about the "draft dodger" that was in office for the previous 8 years.

Republicans are real douche bags!

This is dynamite! I've been hearing for a while that Kerry knows how to fight back against this stuff. Glad to see it's true, because the GOP will keep flinging the mud right up until the election. Then, after Kerry is elected, they'll start it all over again.

14. Turn the tables on them. I'm tired of the cries for Kerry to respond.
The book coming out will be chocked full of lies and lying liars. Their plan is to keep Kerry on the defensive responding to every little fabrication and distortion, strung out via Drudge and Rush and the rest of the lying pack. Karl Rove reportedly said, "By November, people won't know which side John Kerry was fighting for." This is not a time for defense. This is a time to turn the tables and go after the liars, their financiers, and the evil agenda.

I hope I never see another post on DU about how Kerry has to answer this or that crappy charge from these thugs. It's all a pack of lies from the sick and twisted one known as "Bush's Brain" ... and that's the only story here.

26. 2004 Victory, you are right on the mark!
More needs to be pointed out to the connection to Bush donors. Furthermore, it needs to be pointed out that this despicable O'Neill character began his vicious assault aginst Kerry at the urging and behest of the thugs in the Nixon administration.

The people need to be reminded that Kerry has weathered this assault for more than 35 years - from Nixon to Bush.

Thank You so much, ruggerson.

This gives me chills. It also re-triggers my indignation and sorrow over the way Repuke Chickenhawk MFer's are trying to discredit Kerry's service to this nation.

There is right and wrong. The Bushistas seem to think they can do ANYTHING and get away with it. But I know that this lowdown, sorry attack on Kerry is going to turn around and bite them. Watch and see.

24. If this is made into a counter-Ad that got as much exposure as the smear
THEN we can cheer. At this point the mass media and rumor mill
is spreading the message that there are "questions" about Kerry's
services, NOT that Bush is using a bunch of hate-mongers and liars
to smear honorable service -- the message of the OP-ED and the one
we need spread everywhere.

35. Did anyone see Buchannan and the "Author/Vet" today???
The guy that's part of the "unfit for command" jewel? OMG. I was soooooooooooooooo furious with that whole segment. The vet (don't remember his name) was sitting out there in front of God and everyone just SKEWERING Kerry with baldfaced bullshit!!

The guy was coming out of his skin with vitriol and distortions (lies by any other name). Pat did a fair job of asking him some tough questions but they just left it there and it caused me to come on to this computer to see what you all were saying about it.

Pat asked a question about stuff Kerry said regarding rogue actions taken in Viet Nam: indiscriminate killings, ear slicings (true), etc.
He went on to ask the "traitor vet" if that took place in the swift boat group.........of course it didn't. That shit took place ALL OVER THE COUNTRY by every unit in every place (not by every soldier however) but it DID exist. Kerry wasn't the only person who came back telling that story. My HUBBY WAS A VIET NAM VET and WILL NEVER get over what he saw and what he was asked to do. He actually got thrown into the brig for refusing to do some of it and for socking his superiors.

VIET NAM was a CLUSTER FUCK of the first order. There were brave and honorable soldiers who actually stopped other soldiers from doing some of the more outrageous shit.

This smear campaign against Kerry needs to be counter attacked by those who were there and who KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. God, I'm furious.

40. John McCain spent 7 years in the Hanoi Hilton;
Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 11:03 PM by rasputin1952
Admiral William Stockdale also one of the veterans in the Hanoi Hilton, and recipient of the MOH, doesn't seem to have a problem with Kerry.

Bob Dole, wounded in combat, seems to have no problem with Kerry.

But a lot of people that never served on Kerry's boat seem to have problems with Kerry. Allow me to state that again, a lot of people that never served on Kerry's boat, seem to have problems with Kerry.

I recall when there was talk Of Bob Kerrey, a SEAL, and MOH recipient, who gained a PH because of the loss of a leg under fire, was called a coward and a murderer by people who never served with Bob Kerrey. Is there a pattern here?

We have a guy that has the ability to find all of these people that never served with Kerry, but say he is unfit and undeserving of medals awarded.....but we can't find ONE person that can remember bush in the TANG while he was out politicing? NO ONE says they have seen bush during the "missing years".

McCain had 7 years "missing" from his life. Stockdale even longer. Bob Kerrey lost a leg, and Max Cleland lost 3 limbs 3 days after saving several lives in a fire fight for which he was eventually a Silver Star.

What Medal did bush get? What did bush EVER earn?

You're argument is a loser....:)
