An Open Letter To John McCain

Dear Senator McCain:

I would like to preface my remarks by commending you for the courage you displayed in battling melanoma, a particularly malignant form of cancer and for the courage you displayed during your five years in Viet Namese captivity. Few of us could have weathered those storms but you did. As A Christian I believe this is because God has a mission for you.


As a devotee of politics I saw the vicious attacks on your character by pro Bush operatives. Some even questioned your conduct in captivity and the parentage of your adopted Bangladeshi daughter... When I saw those attacks it reminded me of Jefferson's axiom that "I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just"


As Dante has said "the hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in a time of great moral crisis" I know you have denounced the Swift boat Veterans For The Truth (sic) ad and have asked the White House to repudiate it.... So far they have refused...


I go to right wing bulletin boards and not only are they attacking Kerry and his fellow swift boat crew mates but are attacking you as well for defending Kerry. I call on you to ask the Bush campaign team again to renounce the ad and book or withdraw your support from the campaign....

The truth will send you free.

There are all kinds of people who've taken a giant step up to save the country -- former administration officials, diplomats, military, businesspeople, scientists, lawyers, academics, from both parties who've spoken out against the Bush cabal. Howard Dean stepped out of relative political obscurity, risking making a total fool of himself, and made a crucial difference; Wes Clark answered the call once again, leaving a cushy, lucrative life on corporate boards to declare himself not only a Democrat, but a liberal, subjecting himself to the scrutiny of a Presidential campaign. Both of these men are still working their hearts out to beat Bush, along with many, many other patriotic Americans.

I wish McCain would heed your words.
