Michelle Obama is fair game.
Sorry, but she is.

Bill Clinton, a spouse of a candidate, is attacked constantly. Why not Michelle?

As long as Michelle Obama opens her mouth at a podium or lectern in the advancement of her husband's candidacy and has the potential to be the First Lady, the "Proud" American MO is fair game to political scrutiny.

Screw you and the horse you rode in on if you don't like it.

120. Thin skinned Clintons
it's ironic that the same people who think it's perfectly fine to attack Michelle Obama are also the same people who demanded that woman who called Hillary a monster resign, that Randi Rhodes should be fired for calling Hillary a whore and who tried to get David Shuster fired for saying the Clintons were pimping out Chelsea.

96. Then you do not
understand the campaign trail and how it works. Getting up on a stage and endorsing a candidate places you in a different category. You become a "public figure" and open to scrutiny.

Sorry.

BTW I support the same candidate as you do - it is not an issue of who... It is just not really an issue.

Edited on Wed May-21-08 08:10 AM by Labors of Hercules
NO. Hillary having Bill on the stump made it almost impossible for Obama not to have Michelle as his surrogate. In a way, it was VERY unfair to her...

But I think to go head to head on the stump countering Bill Clinton and come out on top is a pretty ASTOUNDING feat.

When you venture into attacks on a spouse's patriotism that she already explained, it's like the STUPIDITY of Obama wearing "a flag pin."

It's MEAN-SPIRITED and plays into the "stereotype" of the "Angry Black Mammy" ... it's fucking sick but I don't think the Tennessee Republicans will snag any other voters than those prone to be racist anyway.

31. "Fair game" for who? What "game" are you talking about? If you're talking about the general election
the Repubs have no concern whether an attack is "fair" or not so the issue is moot.

If you are talking about the primary, that "game" is over. Hillary ran a very hard race, for which she is to be commended, but even she is promoting unity over divisiveness now. If you want to follow Hillary, follow her lead in that regard.

I also understand exactly why Michelle said what she said and fully concur with it.

But when Michelle is stumping for Barack, then she's not off the table. And this isn't an attack of her to say that. I happen to believe that Michelle's a very capable woman and can defend her own positions quite easily. Don't you?

Racist attacks are and have always been self-condemning. But someone might hear Michelle say what she said and have legitimate questions about it, questions she is very capable of answering. Respect is a two-way street.

There is no choice between the smart, beautiful woman and the Joe Blow with a rackfulla guns in my mind. And kudos on Barack for defending his wife.

ETA: And you really should read before posting. I said quite plainly that irrational slander of either spouse was not fair game, only their stated positions when campaigning for their spouses.

Spouses who are NOT politicians should be "off limits" ... yes even Chelsea Clinton.

Barack is right when he says that he should be the main event, and that Tennessee GOP ad did start trodding really close to the line, both in intent and content. (Playing Michelle's comment and then showing that guy next to his gun rack? Mm-hmm, sure, they didn't mean anything by it...)

But people are going to be puzzled by Michelle's remarks, especially when it's yanked out the context she uses and displayed against the obvious benefits she's received from being the daughter of both America and a hard-working set of parents.

However, once they've questioned, people should be willing to hear her out, because she does a great job of explaining what she means. That GOP ad showed no ability to question and listen. It only puffed up and condemned.

Learn to read what I say. When that comment gets ripped out of context, people are going to hear it and ask questions. The honest will seek her out, ask questions, and listen to her answer.

The dishonest will continue to condemn her with extreme prejudice, allowing not an actual single word she actually says affect their idiotic opinion of her.

Do you get it yet? You are doing to me exactly what those racists and fuckwads are doing to Michelle. Now quit it.

154. Tennessee. Pfft.
The state that wouldn't even vote for its adopted native son, Al Gore. Strange attitudes. The weird thing is, when I lived there, I ran with a group of whites, blacks, and Native Americans. So I still am kind of puzzled by the bigotry displayed by that state because that wasn't my experience.

However, this is the state that characterized Harold Ford as a white-woman-chasing playboy. If this ad is the worst the GOP tosses at Obama, it's tame.

Let the Tennessee GOP go out on a limb so far they fall off. You knew this was coming, and Michelle is no dainty flower with a delicate mouth. She packs a punch. If she wants to dish it out, let her take it, too. You can bet that Axelrod and others have been very judicious about counseling Michelle to watch not only what she says, but how she says it. You want to claim that they're racist, too?

I saw Michelle's press conference where she was explaining her "never been proud" and "never been so proud" statements. She ended up with some convoluted explanation of her pride in Barack and America and then mewling, "think about the children, it's for the children."

Those "proud" statements of hers are the gift that keeps on giving to the GOP. She stepped in it, big-time. Buck up and admit it.

I have a problem with the term "fair game" which is more a hunting term about what can be shot at any particular point of time. By using the term it sounds like all candiadtes relatives, spouses, and siblings can be picked off at will if they open their mouths. Nice country you think we have.

121. Right!
Bill Clinton is a little more than just a candidate's "spouse." He's a professional politician and a former two term President of the United States of America! Unlike Bill and Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama hasn't spent the majority of her life trying to get elected to office or trying to get her spouse elected to office. She also has two small children she is raising so, unlike Bill Clinton, she's not out there every single day on the stump giving speeches and holding fundraisers.

Bill Clinton is not only used to being in the national spotlight, he craves it. Unlike Michelle, he's used to being bombarded with questions from the press, he's a pro when it comes dealing with the media. When it comes to politics, he has a lifetime of experience over her!

Bill Clinton is anything but your average spouse who finds him or herself thrust into the national spotlight simply because his or hers spouse decides to seek national office.

Is that really that hard to understand?

I don't agree with going after the spouse if they are not out making speeches, but if they are stumping for their spouse, anything they say during these speeches is in bounds.

Chelsea was in bounds once she began actively campaigning for her mother. Cindy's Tax Returns are defiantly fair game. Michelle's remarks during a campaign speech are fair game.

Whether we like it or not, Michelle's comment is red meat for republicans and they will use it when it comes to the GE. I think the GOP is willing to gamble that Michelle's comment will be a bigger issue to voters in the Ohio, Penn, and Wisconsin than Cindy's tax returns.

I believe Michelle is certainly fair game because she has placed herself on the campaign trail and is making public speeches endorsing her husband -This places her directly in the crosshairs of people who will nitpick her and Obama to death.

If I were to go out in public, stand up with a mic and endorse a candidate I sure as hell would expect to be dissected by the media.

If a wife/husband chooses to campaign for her/his spouse and is out on the stump making speeches, then he/she is fair game. Hillary was fair game back in 1992 and Bill has been more than fair game this primary. Heck, even Chelsea has been criticized!!

107. Thanks for the screw you ending.
A little perspective. One of the reasons Hillary has such negatives is because of the game plan of the rightwing to attack spouses or have you forgotten that Hillary was a First Lady at one time? If this garbage appeals to you, then issues don't IMO.

110. Are you desparate to tear down our likely nominee?
Bill Clinton is not a fair comparison. Obviously, he's in a class by himself. He's the last Democratic president, he is still possibly the most powerful man in the party. His power played a big role in getting Hillary the senate seat in the first place. Hillary's 35 years of experience includes 8 years as first lady while Bill was president.

Michelle Obama's situation is more like that of all the recent first ladies Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton (as first lady, when she should not have been fair game), Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan, Rosalyn Carter, Betty Ford, Pat Nixon, Lady Bird Johnson, Jackie Kennedy.

And using Michelle for a misspoken phrase, is a distraction from Barack and the issues.

Its the old politics of running away from the issues.

This is 2008 and that old gray mare ain’t what she used to be

She is also a death merchant.

Never forget that she is so wealthy by selling booze that eventually leads to dead babies in DUI accidents.

143. Yep. I like it when drooling, low IQ nincompoops prove they have nothing better to
throw at someone like Barack Obama than his middle name or whether he wears flag pins or something his preacher or his wife said once--- a quote or two that might cause a few banjo playing Deliverance rejects to grumble angrily into their chewin' tobacky spit tins.

Yes, with kids dying in Iraq, the deficit through the roof, the economy tanking, the planet overheating, I say to anyone so inclined to wage such an idiotic, low-brow campaign:

GO THE FUCK AHEAD. AT THIS EXTREMELY CRUCIAL MOMENT IN AMERICAN AND HUMAN HISTORY, PLEASE. REMIND US THAT YOU HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEBATE THAN SOME BARELY COHERENT GIBBERISH ABOUT HOW "HEY COOTER!! DIDJA HEAR? MICHELLE OBAMA'S NOT PROUD OF HER COUNTRY!"

And watch it swing back around and bite you on the ass.

You don't see any difference between the two? For example, one was president was for 8 years. The other has never held a political office. Can you guess which one is which?

Is this another 'do as I say not as I do' litmus? She can't be that brittle. She'll need to be more pliable. Or does MO not understand the specific gravity of the task her family aspires to.
