Op-Ed columnist (and former Reagan/Bush41 flunky)James P. Pinkerton may not quite be in lockstep with the worst of the Rethugs, but he's thoroughly unable to figure out why he's so busy scratching at fleas when he wakes up in the morning...

From his 2003 campaign announcement in front of an aircraft carrier to his dramatic Iowa "reunion" with a man who said Kerry saved his life in Vietnam to the pageant in Boston last month in which he was introduced by his "band of brothers" to his own "reporting for duty" acceptance speech - Kerry has spent more time talking about what he did as a young officer in the '60s than what he has done as a U.S. senator since 1985.
Indeed, the men who served with Kerry on his Swift boat, and others such as Vietnam triple-amputee Max Cleland, a former senatorial colleague of Kerry's, are mostly credible figures.
But Kerry's detractors, organized into "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth," are mostly credible, too. They have scars, medals and a lot of anger, much of it packed into a new book, "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry" by John O'Neill, who 35 years ago took over command of Kerry's vessel.
So while it's hard to believe that Kerry is such a fibber - if nothing else, how could he be so stupid? - it's also hard to believe that the anti-Kerry vets are motivated by partisanship or, as some allege, money. Most likely, 99 percent of those veterans lining up against Kerry will never get a dime.Yeah, Jimmy, it's just their recollection. They're not partisan, even though some have long histories as Republican activists, and others unleash flamethrower mouths on anything to the left of Joe McCarthy... Nah, it's just a differing point of view.
