i've never understood how you could be just 3 months away from an important election and you STILL can't decide who to vote for.

should i vote for nader? bush? kerry? JEEZUS! are they blind? stupid? not well educated? deliberately obtuse? i don't get these people.

2. Maybe they are uninformed.
Look how hard it is to be properly informed these days, with the media being merely an echo chamber for the White House....

3. I've heard people say they're "not paying attention yet" because

the election isn't until November.

Yes, it seems silly, but there are people who think picking a candidate is like last-minute cramming for a test.

Maybe they think it makes them seem more complex or intelligent.

5. Not in this election
the domestic issues are very clear, and the distinction is obvious.

I think the problem comes with Iraq, and to be quite frank Kerry has not distinguished himself as being that much different than bush.

7. In my experience they know but just like to play "independent"..
Every "undecided" I know of fancy themselves independents. But their minds are already made up. My cube neighbor at work is one of these. He claims he's an independent and hasn't made up his mind yet. But yet every word out of his mouth is praise for republicans and complaints about democrats. So there is no way he's not going to vote for Bush. But saying he hasn't decided just makes him feel like he's really thinking through the process.

8. many of them are idiots, but there are others
who are true conservatives and vote republican because they oppose abortion rights, oppose gun control etc. but they are undecided because they have lost their jobs and are either out of work or struggling to get by in a job that isn't as good as the one they had with much less pay.so they will considering ignoring those issues they disagree with kerry on in hopes he will make their life better in terms of basic needs such as a good job with enough pay for health, education, home, food etc.

9. I cannot understand it either
I just sit there with my mouth open when I hear that someone hasn't decided. In 2000 I knew two people, one of them a schoolteacher, that did not know when they left the house who they would vote for. They voted for Bush. I don't know what they are going to do this year as politics is kind of a sore topic with us.

11. Al Franken says...
I remembered this from a speech Al Franken gave at the White House Correspondents Dinner a few years back, and tracked it down. During his speech he says this about the "undecideds":
You know this town pays a lot of attention to polls, and I do have some recent poll data about Whitewater. It's very interesting. When asked, "Do you think the Republicans are pursuing Whitewater for partisan gain?" 48% of the respondents said yes, 29% said no, and 23% said they don't know. So as you can see, these don't knows are very important. So who are these don't knows and why don't they know. Well, when the don't knows were asked "what sex are you?" 38% said they were male, 43% said they were female, and 19% said they don't know what sex they were. Now when the same don't knows were asked, "when will you know?" 17% said would know soon. 56% said they would never know, and 27% don't know when they will know. Now when asked, "why don't you know?" 40% said they don't care, 28% said that they resent the poll, and 32% said they don't know why the don't know. What does this all mean. I really don't know.
