Seems we're in a superdelegate endorsement pause...
Up until N. Carolina or so, we've seen for the most part a couple superdelegates per day endorsing Obama.

More recently, specifically, after N. Carolina, the drip has become a solid stream, with 3-5 or even more superdelegates endorsing per day.

But today, we've seen one.

The superdelegates have paused.

For the most part, the endorsements have come at that steady drip-drip in accordance to Obama's strategy.

I'm thinking Obama and the superdelegates are up to something.

Is this the pause before the torrent that ends the race?

1. I think the remaining superdelegates are those who want to offend nobody ...
I expect they will wait until the last possible cover-their-a$$ moment to decide.

3. That is spineless. THey shouldn't be afraid of stepping on Clinton's toes.
Like they say, if you can't handle the heat....

WHy is it everyone is so scared to offend Hillary by choosing who the want?

12. The process worked.
What is left? She can still campaign, still run up her debt, and the voters in SD, PR and MT can still vote for the losing candidate.

Obama has all but moved on to his next opponent, anyway. The superdelegates should stand up and make their choices known.

23. Why do you assume such a thing in the face of clear signs?
If Obama didn' have a large group of SDs in his pocket, he and the DNC would not ne arranging for obama's people to transition into the DNC if anticipation of the general. If obama didn't know he had it, he wouldn't have a vp search in place. If Obama didn't have it, he'd be running a different campaign right now.

11. Well, it kinda makes sense. Last night, he won the Pelosi club. At the same time, the Obama
campaign is obviously walking a thin line here--they want to keep up the aura of inevitability, but they don't want to look like they're forcing Clinton out.

I hope so. Otherwise the democratic party will pay, and pay dearly for "The Clintons" incurable case of megalomania. :scared:

15. I think they're waiting for June 3-4th...
It isn't so far away now--they can say they let the process run out. Which is ok--Puerto Rico will suck--but Montana and South Dakota will enable us to conclude on a high note. The last Supers will come out, the sky will open up, the celestial choirs will sing, and John McSame better get ready to rumble.

My suggestion--enjoy the holiday weekend...

17. This was my opinion weeks ago, and I'm sticking with it
Here's the abridged version: She won't drop out before mid June. He'd get super endorsements until West Virginia, which he would lose. Hillary would campaign on her victory and that would cause supers to slow down until Oregon & Kentucky where they would split wins. He'll start picking up supers again, but not enough to put him over until after the June 3 contests. Hillary will take one week to realize the supers won't budge and she'll have to decide whether staying in for a VP spot, if she wants it, is worth her career if she fails.

The only surprise to me has been the Edwards endorsement.

20. First super goose egg for Obama I can recall
Edited on Thu May-22-08 09:03 PM by Youphemism
He's been getting at least one a day until now. I don't buy that there's any overall superdelegate rollout strategy because we're talking about political folks who are, above all, self-motivated. You might as well try to collectively herd a rafter of turkeys.

I *do* think that at any given point, he's had a handful of superdelegates in his back pocket to release when he needs to blot out or regain a news cycle, and today was not a day in which he needed that -- in fact, he might not want any big movement to blot out his veterans bill debate with McCain, his message to Jewish voters, or McCain's reverend scandal.

But the goose egg stands out, especially because Clinton gained one -- it's also the first day in a long time he's underperformed her on supers.

Not a particularly important event, but notable. In fact, it sort of emphasizes the fact that we've come to expect Obama to beat Clinton on supers every single day.

We're close to the finish line now. I think supers are tentative because the ones who are left have held out for so long that another 10-15 days doesn't matter.

Maybe, also, a lot of them are hoping to be The One to push Obama over the top. And some might believe he'd be extra grateful to the last two dozen or so who get him there.

In any case, I'm mildly surprised. But I still believe that Clinton's threats to take this to the convention and her over-the-top comparison of Michigan and Florida to the civil rights movement will convince a good number of them to endorse Obama before May 31.

I also think it's possible that today's superdelegate pause might -- to use a bad Bush word -- "embolden" Clinton to continue that overblown disenfranchisement message. I still expect it to backfire on her.

22. I don't know, but Obama so far has had an awesome strat. for handling every good clinton news day
...Perhaps the campaign is planning something for any other days that might otherwise be a good hillary news cycle.

Edwards after West Virgina was brilliant. His speech and the precise working of it in Iowa helped deflate any traction on Clinton's win. Maybe something is up for May 31st, or June 4th.
