Old farts for Obama
Yes, I am an old fart. And yes, I support Barack Obama and whomever he chooses for his VP, even if it is Hillary. And yes, you don't have to be young and impressionable to see that Obama is the best thing to happen to the Democratic party since john F. Kennedy. When I was young, Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey, and Tip O'Neill were heroes of mine. I'm glad to see the youth of today looking up to a politician like Obama as a hero. And to see how wide the difference in the number of Democrats as opposed to Rethuglicans voting in the primaries yesterday gives me even further hope for a landslide in November.

53. PS--
On a wintry April day, I voted for Obama in the WI primary...basically because my generation has shot its wad: producing (according to Alan Greenspan) the Best Republican President of the 20th Century (Bill) and the Worst President of Any Century (King George the Turd). Time to pass the torch (and not backwards to McPain: "Like Bush, Only Older")...here's my musical take on it (with sincere apologies to Pete Townshend):

We're trudging up the streets
With icicles on our feet
To vote for the man Oprah worships as The One
And the kids who spur us on
Say that he can do no wrong
They decided when Will.i.am sang that song

So I'll tip my hat to our old Constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again

Interesting, that.

It's the exact sentiment my daughter tried to express to me when she begged me to listen to what Obama had to say. Maybe it is time to pass the torch.

BTW, I like your song!

37. Sheesh gateley, showing off again and now with your french speakin
I am much older than you, and I can't speak french. The other day I asked a granddaughter that is in college for the summer in Switzerland another word for G-ma which is how I sign off on her e-mails. I wanted it in French so I could show a "little" class. What did you just say? Or is that even French? Well, anyway, Hi, and glad to see you around. Excuse me while I light up a stupid cig and gulp my beer. At my age if I last another year I will feel lucky with my wretched habits.

54. I only know a smattering of French from
attending a hoity-toity Catholic girls school where we curtsied to the nuns and were "graded" in our deportment with little French cards. Tres Bien means very good, Bien means good, and Assez Bien was essentially not so good. That's about all I remember and I only remember that because we had Primes (the assembly where received our "notes") every single Monday. My curtseying is probably pretty damn rusty now, too. :7

I'm a smoker, too. A habit, come to think of it, that I picked up at the above-referenced Convent of the Sacred Heart, Forest Ridge. The Reverend Mother had no idea what we were up to. Suffice it to say -- all the stories you hear about Catholic girls? -- True!

How cool that your granddaughter is in Switzerland for the summer. It will be an experience she'll remember for the rest of her life!!

Good to see you!!

69. We only wore patent leather shoes on First Fridays.
And they were white, to go with our white First Friday uniform. The rest of the time we wore saddle shoes. But the moment we were off school property we'd roll up our skirts so short, nobody would have needed the reflective properties of patent leather to get a glimpse of the netherworld.

43. Love ya Kukesa! I did vote for JFK. One of the few I am proud of
Years ago I was so busy surviving life, kids and husband that hogged the tv that I blame him now days for being so dumb about my votes. Gotta blame someone, course he was busy making a living and zoning out with old John Wayne movies, my viewing was limited, in more ways than one. Our news was about 30 minutes at best.

Obama was great with his speech in Fla. today and then Hillary comes on and talks forever about counting the votes. So disappointing. All about Her.

being our age and supporting Obama. Of course she was the one who begged me to give him a look and a listen; out of the mouths of babes. And she's the one who told me about DU, too.

How nice to know there are some of us old farts here on DU.

BTW, lyonn, my husband is still zoning out on old John Wayne movies!

I wish I had known you and janeaustin in the "old" days; we would have knocked 'em dead!

Hugs for both of you.

52. My best friends husband watched John Wayne also
Edited on Wed May-21-08 03:58 PM by lyonn
The only conclusion we could come to over this phenomena was it was a mindless exercise after a day at the office???? Now my husband has moved from John to wwII history and to poker?! Gets more mindless as time goes by. My best friend died a couple of years ago and I am constantly wanting to call her and talk politics, she hated bush, just plain not a repub. How she put up with me during my repub days is beyond me. We laughed later about how I had changed. Many of our friends were die hard repubs and we couldn't even mention politics. I still believe someday Okla. will change - wake up. We now have a Dem governor and Kansas is definitely improving.

Edit: Actually my granddaughter is partly responsible for my becoming an Obama supporter. She is in college and some of her friends on MySpace were Obama fans which made me even more curious about him. What was it that caused these young Okies to go for Obama. In High School she got hacked on for being a Dem. and for abortion, etc.. Got into serious arguments. She was one of the Editors of the school's paper and I was afraid she'd have problems with her views. Didn't happen. She would come home furious about how stupid some of her peers views were.

My daughter thinks that Hillary is just playing a game with the repubs and if elected she would pounce on them, payback in other words. I told her I was afraid to take that chance as she hadn't convinced me she was sincere in many way. I'll take either one before another repub.

65. My parents are the "old smarts" for Obama
***I hate the term "old farts" and certainly would never use it to describe my parents***

They are 86 and 89, white, from the South, and are strong supporters of Obama.

70. My 67 year old father could have written your post.
He tells me that he hasn't been this excited about election since JFK. He loved the Kennedy's - saw Bobby Kennedy stumping in his neighborhood in the Bronx in the 1960's. Oddly, he voted for Bush during the last two elections. He sees something in Obama, though, and he is rallying my whole family to vote for him. It's been so cool to see this transformation.

Incidentally, my dad is a working class white male who lives in New York State. I really don't get the whole "white working class" vote not going to Obama argument. My dad is about as working class as they come.

74. Another old fart here.
I was just 7 years old when JFK became President, but I remember how excited everyone was.

I feel the same with Obama.

I worked early voting for 2 weeks in March, the excitement for Obama was there.

77. Checking in
I guess I didn't see this when it was posted. I'm 58. Female. Hillary Clinton is my Senator and with the usual exceptions I've been happy with her. She's done some good work that doesn't get much publicity, too. And I'm for Obama, voted for Obama and I think that nothing better could happen to this country than to give this man a chance at being its President.

Gray hair? Check.

88. Hey! Am I the only one over 50 who doesn't feel any older than he did when he was 30?!!
Maybe it's because I don't have kids. :-)

Anyway, Southern (NC) white male turning 52 this Sunday who gladly voted for Obama after Edwards dropped out.
