“A man took it away from a woman,” Joy Behar replied. “Then they yelled at her for complaining."
from page 2 of a NYTimes article on why Clinton is staying in the race.

Mr. Obama, whose remarks in Iowa came off as a dress rehearsal for a convention speech, tried to make amends to hard-core Clinton supporters at the same time.

“No matter how this primary ends,” he said, “Senator Clinton has shattered myths and broken barriers and changed the America in which my daughters and yours will come of age.”

That serenity is not yet shared by women who identify with Mrs. Clinton. Whoopi Goldberg asked her co-hosts on “The View” how they would describe Mrs. Clinton’s historic battle for the Democratic nomination.

“A man took it away from a woman,” Joy Behar replied. “Then they yelled at her for complaining about it.”

Normally, I would say something snarky about Joy Behar's complaint, but frankly I was surprised at how this scene actually played out. Even as an Obama supporter, like many of you, I was stunned to see the video in which Senator Clinton was innocently walking down the side with her newly polished nomination in hand, wrapped up in silver ribbons when, in his usual brash and violent manner, big mean Barack, baddest man in the whole south side of Chicago, shoved Clinton to the sidewalk, mussing her calico dress, and ran off down the lane, cackling with insane glee. A tear in her eye, sweet little Miss Clinton could only readjust the bow in her hair, brush the dust off her shoulder, and go complain to kindly police officer, Sergeant Dean. Yet what did this cad to for our poor beleaguered senatress? He yelled at her. How ungallant!

18. This quote is not in the right context.
Joy Behar is a comedian.
She guest hosted on Air America and I can tell you without a doubt she is an Obama supporter and not a Clinton supporter.

I believe this quote had alot of :sarcasm:behind it.

She has been encouraging hillary to quit for a while now for the sake of the party. And, ever since (if not before) he appeared on her show, she has been strongly in his camp....

2. I love your comment!
As a woman and a feminist, I'm frankly nauseated by the pity-party in which paid Hillary operatives are engaging. Their behavior reinforces negative stereotypes about women. I doubt they even believe the crap they're being paid to say.

Update <2008-5-21 12:1:7 by Delaware Dem>:: Many commenters have pointed out that Joy Behar was not voicing her own opinion in that quote, and indeed she is an Obama supporter. Instead she was asked to comment on how the primary will be perceived and the quote is her response. Fair enough. This diary is not an attack on Joy Behar, it is an attack on the perception she offers.

Edited on Wed May-21-08 02:21 PM by ErinBerin84
But..god, I really hate to do this, because it "outs" me as a person who watches the View every day, lol. She pretty much more or less said she voted for Hillary on February 5th. She has always said that she liked both democrats though, and has lately started to accept that Hillary isn't going to be the nominee. I still wish she wouldn't be so spineless when Elizabeth spouts her Hannity talking points. Though I think she is starting to get more and more frustrated about Elizabeth and her fake "statistics". But if she recently favors Obama over Clinton, it's something that's happened only within the last two months.

but again, I watch The View every day, so I've reached my opinion from my observations of her support for Hillary. She voted for her on February 5th. I could probably youtube a bunch of stuff, but I'm too lazy, and my hourly View habbit is massochistic and traumatizing enough as it is! I can't believe I still watch, it makes me so angry. I'm not sure what the op's source is for "most commenters think", because that has not been my observation at all. And it really embarasses me to have to talk about my dirty habbit of watching the View! Joy probably is a supporter now, but it's a recent preference over Hillary.

Haha, Joy seemed to get really pissed with Elizabeth the other day, but held back. I really hope that she lets it all out one of these days, Elizabeth deserves to have her uninformed ass handed to her.

11. That comment assumes HRC was entitled to it from the start.
She did not "own" the nomination, nor was she entitled to it.

True, she had a huge initial lead in the polls based on name recognition and MSM hype, but then the voting started.

HRC has no one but herself for not having a "Plan B" for what to do if she wasn't crowned the nominee from Day One.

12. That quote is just dumb on so many levels
He didn't "take" anything from her, as it wasn't hers to begin with, although indeed part of her problem has been she thought that it was. And beyond that he didn't "take" anything from her, as he beat her fair and square under the rules of the nominating process. And who yelled at her for complaining? They yelled at her for running such a low road campaign. And as to complaining, just what legitimate complaint does she have? We know that after the fact she hates caucuses and feels that an election in Michigan with only her name on the ballot is a fair shake, but please, her only complaint is that she didn't win.

29. Chauvinism
I was having a conversation with my mother last Sunday and the subject of Hillary came up and before I could even get my thoughts out my mother called me a Chauvinist. I explained to my mother that Clinton lost because she underestimated the peoples desire for change and she also underestimated Obama. I told her that her campaign advisor's had let her down and that she thought she was the chosen one. What I have come to realize is that woman like my mother who went through the womens rights movements of the 60's and 70's truly feel that this is the only time in their lifetime that a woman has a chance to be elected president and they truly feel that it is being taken away from them by men. I have said repeatedly that Hillary Clinton would be a great president but right now I feel we need to move this country away from the Bush-Clinton era that we have been in for the past 20 years.

34. I think that Obama's visit to "The View' converted the women..
(except for that right-wing brainless little snip elizabeth).

They were 'Obamomied' by his intellect, his charisma, his presence.
You could smell the pheremones thru the t.v.

The issue with Behar's statment, like all humor, is that often
sarcasm doesn't come across in the written word. The first time I read it, I went "Whoa!" knowing how JOy comes across.

Think about it... before you bash Joy... She's right yanno..
Many think he snatched it from her hands...
And I think he's been more than gracious to her recently...
