DISGUSTING Georgia tabloid shows photo of Obama in RIFLE CROSSHAIRS!
(and I *live* here... :grr:)

Illustration of Obama in rifle crosshairs draws fire

A Roswell newspaper is defending a controversial cover illustration that placed Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama in a rifle's cross hairs.

<snip>

DailyKos readers — Kos receives more than 1.3 million visits a day, according to sitemeter.com — were encouraged to contact the newspaper and its advertisers. By day's end, Holiday Inn announced it would no longer do business with the Beacon, though the paper's publisher, John Fredericks, said editorial decisions would not be influenced by "liberal blogger thuggery."

"Good, bad or ugly, we tell the truth," he said.

1. Please DU the poll on the AJC.

2. Feel free to let the editor of the "Roswell Beacon" know how you feel: http://beaconcast.com/ (even though it's obvious he's a RW jerk)

3. If you are an Atlanta-area resident, please contact the advertisers below the picture, and encourage them to not advertise in this rag (thanks to this blogger on DailyKos for the list! :hi: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/5/20/123456/580 )

10. Excerpt from spiralstairs post on Kos:
The accompanying article is about hate groups in the area who are upset about Senator Obama’s candidacy and concerns the local authorities have about possible violent acts from these groups.

The article itself is not offensive, but the cover is beyond the pale. As indicated by the article, there are some serious racists in the area, and Obama’s candidacy has brought out the worst in a lot of people. The last thing we need is a newspaper to suggest assassination with an incendiary cover such as this.

16. My guess is
it's about whites resenting a black man for gaining power...and possibly doing something about it. If so, the cover image might make sense, although it still borders on complicity or suggestion.

From their site:

A 1980 graduate of Fairleigh-Dickinson University, where he majored in economics and political science, Fredericks has been a senior media publishing executive for more than 25 years and has served some of the largest newspaper companies in the United States.

As Chairman of Beacon Media Companies, the complete news and information source of North Fulton County, Fredericks is dually committed to serving both readers and advertisers in an enlightened way.

if you don't think both campaigns have EXPERTS pouring over every inch of campaign literature and commercials then I have a flying pig to sell you. They spend a lot of money to design everything a certain way for a purpose. So if the gun was pointed at Obama's head it had to be for a specific reason... I can only think of one, but I will be glad to hear any suggestions you have.

59. You are over-reacting and making an ass of yourself
The gun in the mailer was pointing past Obama's head. You can argue the psychological meaning of the image, and your point may have some validity, but this will be lost on the majority of readers who will mock you for being a hysterical paranoid. Pick battles you can win, not ones where you are doomed to failure.

You might as well try to sell copies of Encyclopaedia Britannica at a book-burning.

61. I disagree
I, too, found the gun-mailer suggestive Sen. Obama being on the receiving end of that rifle. It was done subtly enough to be able to argue innocence but Sen. Obama clearly was positioned in such a way as for the image to be open to either interpretation.

18. Please consider NOT giving energy to this type of material...
As we have seen from Hillary discussing racial bigotry like it is a perfectly normal and acceptable reason to vote or not vote for a candidate, bigots are now emboldened to tell the world that they voted based on race.

I think discussion of assassination makes the idea more acceptable, regardless of how many disclaimers are used. The more accepted it becomes, the more likely it will be carried out, IMO.

I don't agree with the practice of "alerting" mods for most issues, but I do when it comes to the safety of a person. So I will alert the mods on these posts. I've only done it once so far, and I don't know if the thread was locked or pulled.

I've lived through enough assassinations of politicians in my life. I have zero tolerance for it and anything that leads up to it.

I think I'd like to meet that Max Reynolds guy. Man, is he walking a fine line.

What concerned me the most was how many of these guys have military backgrounds. There has to be a way to use their military service for something productive, rather than let them get sucked into these destructive militia-like groups. This is particularly a concern with all of the soldiers we'll have coming back from Iraq.

By the way, I can't find that picture on their site anymore, so I'm sure they've already been contacted by the Secret Service.

ETA: In case anyone else bothers to read this, what the hell does that last sentence mean?

That AWFUL cover is actually legally protected freedom of speech and/or expression. I don't care what the publisher *says8 they intended by depicting Obama in the crosshairs, it's clearly a horrible image which suggests the unthinkable.

BTW, back before Bush was elected in 2000, I saw some guy on late night TV hold up a 'poster' of GW Bush's face with the title 'Sniper Wanted.' That was wrong too.

I live in Atlanta. I will call some of those advertisers and suggest they get out of their contracts with the free POS rag.

Home of the KKK parades several years ago.

And just east of Cobb County, home of the "We disapprove of homosexuality" resolution--that cost them an Olympic event in 1996 (and its accompanying tourist dollars).

Sadly, we live in a very red state.

Edit:

Found the story -- it was in Cumming, Georgia, Forsyth County:

The KKK sued Forsyth County due to a parade they wanted. It went all the way to the Supreme Court.

58. Please STOP saying 'DU the poll'.
I agree 100% with your views about this disgusting tabloid trash. But whenever someone says 'DU the poll' it means the same thing as 'spam the poll', and offers our detractors a free hand to say 'DU = Spam'. Online polls are stupid and meaningless, and inviting people to spam them on behalf of DU elevates their importance while detracting from our credibility.

62. Dude, we already have detractors
And *anyone* has a right to vote in this poll, DUers included. Not to mention that there's no way to tell who has voted or where they're from.

Lowering that 24% who think the cover is perfectly fine FAR outweighs the risk of getting labeled spammers by Freepers. WGAS what they think?

So no, I will keep the tradition of "DU this poll", thankyouverymuch. :hi:

63. This graphic shows Clinton's campaign HOPE..
This is what she's waiting for while she destroys the Democratic party..

Its really that simple, and her backers LOVE that it bothers and hurts people.. Sadists, just look at how they answer those posts where we worry about the party.. They are laughing in our faces right here on this board..

And NO One does a thing about it.. In the interest of "fairness" to these sickos we are ALL going to lose our homes and Liberties..

Cut out these cancers or join them.

64. So, why has the Clinton campaign not spoken out about this?
Gee, maybe because it would attract even more attention. Hey, Clinton peeps--same logic works for the nutcracker incident. Let's not give assholes free advertising.
