Obsess much?
Edited on Wed May-21-08 05:28 PM by PeterU
The following is a cut/paste of all posts on the first page of GD-P at approximately 6:00 pm EDT.

Out of interest, I conducted an audit of all the times I was able to count the words "Hillary", "Clinton" and "she"/"her" (in reference to Hillary Clinton), versus all the times I was able to count the words "Barack", "Obama", and "he/him" (in reference to Barack Obama).

Here are the numbers I came up with:

Hillary-25
Clinton-10
she/her-14
Total-49

Barack-1
Obama-22
he/him-1
Total-24

Now, let's analyze the situation. The fact is, on this board, GD-P, I would say the number of Barack Obama supporters outnumbers those of Hillary Clinton supporters pretty heavily. I would handicap it at 2:1, maybe even 3:1.

However, the number of references to Hillary Clinton (and most of them being negative) is more than double the number of references to Barack Obama.

I find this very disturbing. What this tells me is that the supporters of Barack Obama on this board are more interested in going negative against Hillary Clinton then they are in positively bolstering support for their own candidate. This is not healthy behavior in the least.

Barack Obama supporters have the greatest of assets in the fact they have a candidate who is smart, inspiring, an excellent speaker, a gentleman, and someone who will likely make a very effective president. (To be fair, I honestly believe much of the same could be said about Hillary Clinton). However, Obama's supporters have choosen to waste this valuable resource and instead obsess, quite unhealthfully, about the other candidate and what she says and does.

The fact of the matter is that Barack Obama will likely be the Democratic nominee. Isn't it a lot smarter to positively bolster your own candidate than to trash and denigrate the other candidate, and alienate her supporters, thus hurting your own cause in the process? If Hillary Clinton is still in the election, fine. Let the democratic process play out, let everyone vote, and after that we can talk about what's best for the convention. Right now you should be focusing on bringing forth a positive vision for the general election instead of wasting your time, obsessing about, slandering and trashing a fellow Democratic candidate.

You are only hurting all of us in the process.

Think about it.

13. What does IBTL mean? And why is an analysis, with no one NAMED, be a "call out?"
If someone mentions someone by name and talks about them, that's a call out.

You'd have to be obsessive yourself to find out who said that stuff.

23. As I noted elsewhere, that is just a list.
It's the very same list of subject lines and authors you can see IN the GDP forum with a simple click or two.

The discussion doesn't say "X is a jerk for saying Z" or "Y shouldn't have said A, B, or C." The discussion portion of the OP is very generic, in fact. I'm guessing that's probably deliberate, to AVOID calling individuals names.

Those subject/author listings are posted right here on this discussion board--it's not a big secret.

You're free to take a view in opposition if you disagree with the OP's conclusions. I don't think this sort of discussion is not without benefit, either. Only people who are ashamed of the way they're coming across don't want to talk about it, really. If there's nothing to be ashamed of, or if there's a 'pot call kettle' argument in refutation, it should be made. Unless there's a problem with forthright discussion, that is.

Could you tell me what those four initials mean? I really haven't a clue.

Edited on Wed May-21-08 05:36 PM by Bucky
I don't mind poking fun of either candidate, if it's done in good humor. They both have their flaws. But the panicky stuff about Clinton is particularly ugly and stupid. The panicky stuff about Obama is less frequent and seems rooted in experiences in that alternate Star Trek universe where there's an evil empire running the world and Spock has a goatee.

20. You'd have to call them A, B, and C, or 1,2, and 3. Naming them WOULD be one of those "call outs"
but doing a general analysis is not.

Tangentially, that goatee never suited Spock, IMO!

9. perhaps if both candidates were equally negative you would have a point.
But to ignore the queen of hate's message is a gross conceptual error.

Think of it as a open forum on the life of FDR or Stalin. You would never expect such a discussion to be equal in terms except maybe on a pro Hillary or perhaps the Free Republic board.

It's a cheerleading club.

No people are named...I don't see any posts that say, "Oh JimGinPA said such and such about so and so."

It's an analsyis of commentary, and no one is named.

You'd have to be "obsessive" to track down those comments--and they are public comments--and match them to an individual.

21. Well, all that is is a LIST. It's the same list you can see if you go to the front page of GDP.
There isn't any "Gee, look at what an ASS Fill In The Blank is" or "And look at how DUMB this post by so and so is!!!" associated with that part of the post. It's just a list of subject lines and names, and that is available on the GDP page. It's not "secret" in any way. A link would serve the same purpose.

The analysis at the top is quite general. The subject lines aren't commented on--though they do support the thesis, and they DO rather speak for themselves.

There IS something happening on this board. It's pretty obvious, too.

Not talking about it isn't going to make it go away.
