8. Kerry doing well too!
"Bush has misled this nation about war."

At last, he's being honest.

"Proactive foreign policy. . . that reaches out to other countries."

'The war on terror is less a military operation and more an intelligence and law enforcement operation."

Where was this Kerry six months ago? I wish he'd taken this tack earlier.

Edited on Sun Jan-04-04 03:21 PM by Tinoire
Good question- in I/P would you negotiate with Hamas.

Sorry Edwards- you're touting the party line. Hamas and the IDF are equal terrorists- one is not causing less terror than the other. Arafat is the Palestinian leader whether we like it or not.

Excellent questions they're asking.

Edwards- good points about how we need to be engaged though and how he would do it vs the photo ops engagements we've had lately.

He'll get an A on that from most people so overall good answer I guess

49. Dean said Saddam Hussein wouldn't be in power today
That was an odd response. I was very impressed with his first two answers and the way he said Saddam Hussein wasn't a threat. However, he said that had we taken his advice we would have gone after, maybe caught Osama, then got a coalition and removed Saddam Hussein. I don't buy that. It's not even been a yr. That strikes me as a political answer by implying that, yes, Saddam would be out of power.

What Dean should have said was, yes, Saddam Hussein may well have still been in power, but we would have effectively contained him and proven that he was not a threat. We would have known what the status of his WMD programs were, and we'd be monitering him, so that if it emerged that he was engaging in genocide or reviving his WMD programs we would attack later -- just not right now. That would have been the most sensible answer

18. Kucinich
we can cut Pentagon budget 15%.

As the ranking Democrat on the Government Oversight Subcommittee that specifically has jurisdiction over the Department of Defense (and the Central Intelligence Agency) knows intimately of the waste that takes place there with the development of new nuclear weapons and known fraud with the development of the missile shield program so if we eliminate the fraud, no problem cutting 15%

Good points for mentioning we need to get out of Iraq now, that it's already cost us over $155 Billion spent in 9 months and that he's the
only candidate calling for US out of Iraq- detailed plan on his web-site .

His plan will have the troops home in 90 days saving a lot of money and troop lives

50. I can't watch, but if it is true they asked Dean a very
negative question and are asking the others policy questions or questions about Dean, then it does seem "someone" wants to control what is memorable about the debates. I think the "take-home" points they want are:
It's everyone against Dean
Dean hates Bush, or his supporters do
They all hate each other
there are too many of them

and debates are set up accordingly.

especially Kucinich. Implying that if Nafta repealed, this would be protectionism...But DK said we should go to bi-lateral trade agreements...
Would be great if we could have bilateral trade agreement with CHINA. oH, WHAT A VISION.

72. Hahahaha, Karry slamming Gep too!
"For many years, Dick Gephardt has stood up and said 'I am for free trade.'" Hahahahaha!

So much for the "beat up on Dean" fear. :)

73. Kucinich NAFTA
3 million manufacturing jobs lost in this country

Cancel NAFTA and WTO. says he heard Dean talk about NAFTA in an earlier answer but Dean "will you pull out of NAFTA and the WTO"?

I didn't like Dean's earlier answer when he talked about NAFTA/WTO... that what we needed to add to it was the globalized right to protest and etc stuff that I don't think would fix the problem. Hope someone captured Dean's earlier response

97. Dean did good on NAFTA
He mentioned a key issue - the FTAs protect corporations and profits, but have no protections for people (thanks to people like Dean).

Good answer.

98. He is but he spent more time talking about Bush did
than saying what he would do. they had to ask him the question a second time. I think that's something he needs to watch from this point forward now that he's a solid contender otherwise he'll come across more as the Bush-basher than the guy who can fix things. Hope that makes sense. I thought his other answers were much better because he really answered the question. They're all doing good today. Well, not Lieberman, poor thing- he's made a few valid points but is too irritating.

94. he's right!
the was a net INCREASE on middle-class taxpayers. The only 'cut' was $304 in federal taxes-- state and local taxes went up.

101. State and local taxes will NOT go back down
when federal taxes are raised to prior levels. This will result in even larger taxes on the middle class, IMO.
