I'm trying to give Hillary Clinton the benefit of the doubt here
I'm an Obama supporter but I don't hate Hillary. I have seen politicians destroyed by a poorly worded comment (remember John Kerry's botched joke in 2006?) and I don't like to do that to anyone. I want to believe her explanation that she was merely referring to the race going until June in 1968. But I looked at the quote again and she specifically used the word assassinate...she did not say "Robert Kennedy did not wrap up the nomination until June". It sounded to me like she might as well stick around because anything could happen, just like in 1968. I started typing up a defense but halfway through I stopped because I just did not think it sounded credible.

At the very least, it was insensitive. I've gone canvassing in black neighborhoods and met older black women who say they pray for his safety...I've met people who are afraid to vote for him because they are afraid he'll get assassinated. I am not going to accuse her of having a malicious motive, but at the very least, her comments were highly insensitive.

1. After seeing it on video
It really did sound like she was saying that she should stay in the race in case something happens to Obama, a la 1968. I don't think she hopes that Obama gets assassinated but I think she is hoping for a big scandal or something that derails his campaign, and I think what she said may have been a Freudian slip. I don't think she meant to say it, and when I saw the video of her apology she looked like she clearly regretted it, for political reasons and probably genuine reasons as well. She probably realized after saying it how insensitive it was, and I am torn here. Her comment was at the very least insensitive and it may have been a Freudian slip, but I hate to see anyone go down because of one stupid thing they said. I saw how the "botched joke" killed any chance Kerry had of running again and even though I did not even want him to run again I thought it sucked the way that one comment became such a shitstorm. I have a big mouth and I know what it's like to say something stupid and then realize how insensitive it is, so I am sympathetic to some degree. But when you listen to the original comment it's really hard to excuse.
