110. Actually it makes Obama weaker....
The more Obama supporters attack and seethe anger, the more people are driven away from him. Abuse just doesn't sell.

If Obama loses it will be the fault of his 'supporters' who have driven half of the Democratic party AWAY from the Democratic party.

69. Have you found anything she has said
not offensive? And, even more to the point, have you found anything Senator Obama said to be offensive?

I swear, if Senator Clinton sneezes someone on this board will say she sneezed in an offensive, racist way.

What she said today has been, as so many other things with this campaign, twisted and warped beyond recognition. Do you remember that idiotic uproar over the 1992 tape alleged to be referring to "white N***ers", and saying "these people are sh**s"?

Shaheen, the MLK "remark", the Jesse Jackson statement, etc. etc. etc, on and on and on. Manufactured crap! Just like this flap is.

I really, really hope that the people doing phone calling, door knocking, hand shaking, etc. for Senator Obama don't show this kind of animus for Hillary to the people they are trying to bring on board. The ones not as politically minded as those of us that would come to a site like this. Because that would not do much to help.

The Clinton people here at DU, I am quite sure, will join the Obama team once it is official. We are too much "political animal" not to. The uninitiated, however...The ones who think about politics only when they have to, and who may be leaning toward Senator Clinton, may be really turned off by it.

There are things I wish Senator Clinton had not said. "Sniper fire" is one of them. Can you name something..anything..you wish Senator Obama had not said/done?

Edited on Fri May-23-08 08:31 PM by ErinBerin84
the more she counters her campaign's theme that she is the consummate professional whose political experience and know how would prevent her from making similar gaffes in the general election. She is making mistakes that she should not be making, too tone deaf given her "35 years of experience". If a theme of her downfall is also that the media bias harmed her and ultimately not her message or strategic campaign mistakes, then the media bias in the general election would also harm her, because I'm sure that she would make similar fuck ups in the general.

opponent being shot.

What she's saying is "I'm so pathetically desperate to be nominated I'm sticking around because my opponent is an N-word and one of my hard working white american supporters who all love guns just like me might take it upon himself to whack him. And I'm such a loser that scenario would be acceptable to me."

Not the words of a strong candidate.

The way people on this forum board have treated Hillary supporters of all kinds it will be a modern political miracle if any of them support Barack Obama or any candidates riding his coat-tails in the general election.

Underminded? Credibility? I don't want you to believe me. I just want you to be inspired and then to take whatever direction your inspirations will lead you.

Her use of this example, phrased as it was, was absolutely boneheaded, especially in a race that is as racially- and gender-charged as this. Admit it.

I know that she does not want Obama's assassination--no one with a brain in their head should think this. But it is seriously distressing that she would use THIS example above others and not take into account how her remarks would sound to others.

Her REFERENCING of the Kennedy assassination in 1968 was stupid and inappropriate, especially when she had several better examples to choose from.

Do you understand the point I am trying to make now? You said "Hillary has 17 million supporters. Obama has 90 % of blacks voting for him." I think it is a fair reading that you marginalized his support. And I will not ignore you, because I like the dialogue. If you read my above comment (not the ones you are replying to, but my reply to your original comment), you will see that I don't think that she meant to imply that she was waiting around for his assasination. But I do think that it is legitimate to say that it is tone deaf and runs counter to her message of political savvy. And I will rightly criticize that, if she finds it appropriate to attack him for comments that he has made that have not been so politically savvy.

63. Try the 90% blacks as a metaphor. The 90% black vote will indeed be marginalized in the GE.....
....because much of that vote was in the southern and other red states which will stay red.

So then, try to follow this, those 17 million Hillary primary voters will be sorely needed by Obama and the Democrats in November or the presidency and at least the Senate may be lost.

All those old white women? You mean like this one......?

The problem, IMNSHO, is that far too many people become "rigid" in their perspectives as they age. They will NOT permit "new information" to change their strongly held "emotional" opinions to ALTER in any way. As such, all information is process through a "filter."

But PLEASE be aware that there are a few of us approaching 50 y.o., and above, who at least try to stay enlightened and intellectually curious? ;)

75. god.
You can't even debate the legitimate points that I am trying to make about the larger impact of her remarks, so lets just get back to the "marginalization" debate. Hillary has a coalition that goes above old white women, which is what I am saying. Yes, Obama will need Hillary supporters in the general. Just as Hillary supporters would need Obama supporters in the Fall if she has any chance in hell in November either. And she is slowly fucking the chances of that up by the remarks she is continuing to make as well. You claiming that Hillary supporters have more power or political weight than Obama supporters is wrong.

...relevance, relevance.

Obama is the one with the problems.

http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2008/Clinton/Maps/May23.html

Browse around there. I know, just polls but they do show trends. See all those red states that Obama won in the primaries? They will stay red in the general.

Yes, Hillary support is broader based than Obama's because the 90% black block is scattered over red states that I repeat, will stay red. Sorry, that's a fact.

Her remarks to the editorial board were very brief. Anything can happen between now and the convention. Then she related what happened to her husband and Bobby Kennedy. What legitimate points? Simple facts. Nothing to debate.

Some deep malevolent wish for Obama to be killed? Bullshit!

Edited on Fri May-23-08 09:55 PM by ErinBerin84
I had just STATED in my post that I did NOT think that Hillary's statement was some "deep malevolent wish for Obama to be killed". She would have been better off and smarter to just say "We didn't see Reverend Wright coming, or that Obama would make disparaging remarks of an Elitist nature. Anything can happen in a political season, just look over the last couple of months". Her comments to the editorial board may have been brief, but she has repeated the RFK remarks at least four times before. In response to the swing state polls, seeing as how she is running virtually unopposed, with the GOP being her cheerleader instead of taking anything she says seriously, it's stunning that she isn't doing better in the polls of those swing states. When you say "Stop blaming Hillary Clinton for any of this", your weak argument just suggests that your real intent is "stop blaming Hillary Clinton for ANYTHING".

104. Stop blaming her because, I repeat, it is irrelevant...she isn't going to be nominated...
...her analysis of the undependability of the political process is based on enough experience to realize that indeed presumptive nominations to the presidency are seriously flawed based on the changing political landscapes which regrettably include assassinations.

My real intent is what? Don't be silly. I may be wildly in love with her but I would never excuse any serious or dangerous flaws in her character. She just doesn't have any.

109. I agree with you that
"her analysis of the undependability of the political process is based on enough experience to realize that indeed presumptive nominations to the presidency are seriously flawed based on the changing political landscapes which regrettably include assassinations"

I'm not debating that. I just wished she had said that in a more concise and skillful manner. Again, not a demonstration of her character as much as an infortunate display of tone deafness. People are extra sensitive this week, given Ted Kennedy's diagnosis. I understand that Robert Kennedy JR is not offended, but her remarks did not have the sole potential to offend the Kennedy family. I'm not even really offended by them, I just think her use of historical references (Florida=Zimbabwe?) are bizarre and she could use more effective ones.

I respect your opinion, but we will just have to agree to disagree on this one.

113. I watched the entire forum with the editorial board and really, the RFK remark was ....
...just a few seconds and a passing remark that explained that campaigns can take sudden turns and that quitting before everything had been determined and before the convention would be foolish.

I repeat, Hubert Horatio Humphrey never entered a primary in 1968 and he got the nomination because Kennedy had been assassinated. What are we supposed to make of that?

So maybe she could have diminished the impact of whatever assassination conjures up but that editorial board didn't blink at all at her remark because they were attentive to the context.

Maybe we could do the same.

....Bobby Kennedy's campaign ended in June, 1968 when he was assassinated.

Two facts that cannot be disputed. They happened in June.

And...why should she drop out before the primaries are all over, i.e. June, 2008, and before all the votes are counted and before all the delegates are selected?

Tell you what I am not OK with....People putting words in her mouth and intent in her head which she never said or thought.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=6101688&mesg_id=6101688

“I’ve heard her make that argument before,” Mr. Kennedy said, speaking on his cell phone as he drove to the family compound in Hyannis for the holiday weekend. “It sounds like she was invoking a familiar historical circumstance in support of her argument for continuing her campaign.” . . . is support of Mrs. Clinton has not wavered.

More from RFK, Jr.:

I have heard her make this reference before, also citing her husband's 1992 race, both of which were hard fought through June. I understand how highly charged the atmosphere is, but I think it is a mistake for people to take offense."

The Argus Leader’s Executive Editor Randell Beck issued the following statement today:

“The context of the question and answer with Sen. Clinton was whether her continued candidacy jeopardized party unity this close to the Democratic convention. Her reference to Mr. Kennedy’s assassination appeared to focus on the timeline of his primary candidacy and not the assassination itself."
