Original message
Hillary Clinton brought tears to my eyes this afternoon.
When I heard of her remarks, I actually got tears in my eyes. Not tears of anger or ridicule, which can be expected from her antics lately.

No, tears of sorrow and sadness and heavy-heartedness. That anyone, anyone, would say such a thing is beyond comprehension. I don't think even Rush Limbaugh would say something like that, I really don't.

She didn't say that by accident. She knew exactly what she was doing and exactly what she was saying. She can't apologize it away. Not now, not ever.

She needs to get on her knees and beg forgiveness from the Obamas and the Kennedys. And then she needs to immediately retire - not just from the primary, but from political life in general. She and her husband and child need to withdraw from the limelight and go off and live their pathetic lives without having to force any of us to know anything about them ever again.

23. apologizing to everyone in America BUT the people offended
Edited on Fri May-23-08 10:06 PM by crankychatter
says one thing

she meant it

and she doesn't give a shit about Obama, his family, the African American community or any of Obama's supporters that have fears for his safety

oh, she meant it

her apology was merely clarification

the truth is contained in what was NOT SAID

5. Damn. I've never even thought to say all 3 Clintons need to retire forever.
I've always stopped at HRC.

WOW!

I've been pissed. I've been irritated. Today, I have been HORRIFIED and REALLY VERY VERY SCARED FOR OBAMA.

But I haven't cast Hillary, Chelsea, and Bill off to the dustbin of history yet.

I definitely don't think I could tolerate Chelsea being a political candidate in my lifetime, but WOW!

I don't think I will ever view Bill Clinton the same way because he was such an unbelievable ass during this contest.

But all 3, you must be beyond words.

I used to think that she was an incredibly smart woman. But in the past few months I've realized she's really pretty stupid. How else can you explain the self-sabotage that's gone on in the last six months?

39. It's not that difficult to explain.
She thought she had it, and, let's be fair, so did plenty of other people. Then the primaries happened, and she ended up behind... but not decisively, just marginally. And with that arrangement, this thing has dragged on for months.

It makes perfect sense, in such circumstances, that she would hold on to an increasingly desperate hope, and act as most people act when they are denying something that just grows clearer and clearer.

46. No, it's not that easy.
She hasn't just been desperate - she's self-destructed. She's been through too much in public and political life for anyone to pretend that she just didn't realize what she's been doing or the consequences of her actions and words.

49. On some level, she might realize it just fine.
Undoubtedly she knows she just made a major political error, and regrets it deeply.

But that's precisely the point--because she realizes the consequences of her actions, it makes no sense to pretend that statements like the one she made today were conscious and deliberate.

52. I just don't believe you can make that kind of mistake.
The only way it could be a "mistake" is if she truly feels that way - and she apparently does, this is not the first racist or hate-based thing she's said - and just didn't mean to say it publicly. The mistake was simply not keeping it to herself.

If you really don't feel or think that way, you wouldn't mistakenly say something like that. It would be impossible to make that kind of error.

48. I will take the word of Robert Kenndy Jr over the rants in here
about HRC's statement. Damn, some you act as though you could pour gasoline over your head getting so worked up over this statement. COMMON DAMN SENSE would dicate what HRC said and there was no harm intended to befall obambi.....

As I said I will take Robert Kenndy Jr.'s words: "I’ve heard her make that argument before,” Mr. Kennedy said, speaking on his cell phone as he drove to the family compound in Hyannis for the holiday weekend. “It sounds like she was invoking a familiar historical circumstance in support of her argument for continuing her campaign.” . . . is support of Mrs. Clinton has not wavered.
More from RFK, Jr.:

I have heard her make this reference before, also citing her husband's 1992 race, both of which were hard fought through June. I understand how highly charged the atmosphere is, but I think it is a mistake for people to take offense."

Well - if RFK's namesake is not upset with Hillary and understands what she was trying to say- maybe some of you should CHILL!

Shalom
Ben David

In part for what she said, but also in part for such a terrible ending to such a promising political career.

She started this campaign as the "inevitable" nominee and now, she's not only toast as a presidential candidate, but she may very likely be done in politics for good. Even though she gave a non-apology apology, she looked very shook up about it all. While I was watching KO's special comment, I was imagining Hillary sitting in a hotel room somewhere suddenly realizing the dream has died.

I am feeling this strange mix of disgust and pity for the woman. I didn't want to see her go down this way. She's capable of so much better. And yet I'm so not surprised.

68. I actually used to like her.
I was excited for her campaign and respected her. She has fallen so far - I don't even recognize her anymore. And I wonder: was I duped or has she changed that much? I guess in the end it doesn't really matter, but I do wonder.

72. I've wondered the same

You're right, though. In the end it doesn't matter. I just can't believe this is going to be her legacy - the thing she'll probably always be remembered for. I know politicians have come back from this kind of faux pas before, but the way she's handled herself lately tells me she's in no mood to do what it will take. I fully expect more petulant, victim mentality and that will not make this better. I suspect that was the cause of the tears in the first place.

It's like knowing your sister is an alcoholic and she's one more bottle of vodka away from living on the street. You can see the situation perfectly. You can see that she can make it right, but her addiction is keeping her from seeing right from wrong. And there just isn't anything you can do about it but watch.

On that sad note, I think I'll head to bed.

73. She can't come back from it because it's not an isolated incident.
If it had been, it still would have been BAD, but it wouldn't be as bad. But, there are so many other things that have been said and done (as well as this very comment made twice before) that she'll never be able to bounce back. This will not only be her legacy, but it will greatly affect her husband's legacy too. It is sad.

74. I don't know
I still think if she had her head in the game and a proper frame of mind about it, she could go a long way toward fixing this. By fixing it, I mean making it so that after a few years it isn't the first thing we think about when we hear her name. There are a lot of things she could do to redeem herself in the eyes of the public. But she doesn't have that proper frame of mind necessary to begin that redemption.

You're right. History won't paint the Clintons well.

And as I edited to say in my last post, I'll take that sad thought to bed with me.

78. Grantcart had a post a couple of weeks about the version of Clinton
--that appeared on the Nightline interview. I like to think that is the real person under all those "handled by consultants" layers. I wish she would go back to being that person.

92. That's exactly how I feel.
I'm frustrated that this primary ever got this dirty. It didn't have to be this way, and I feel really bad that it is going to end like this.

69. When was the last time she said his name?
Lately, she has been referring to Obama as "my opponent".

Tonight, she didn't mention his name or his family at all in her explanation.

Detachment.

76. There's something else, too.
She needs to apologize to all of us who are old enough to remember what we lost that day, the last day that this party was a liberal organization. Because after that, it's been a long coast to the right with all that has meant concretely for our people. It wasn't only the loss of one man, even that man, but losing a way of life and for forty years.

80. So true.
You're absolutely right - this wasn't just an affront to the Obamas and the Kennedys - it was an affront to all Americans, especially those who lived through those horrific days.

81. My view of the Clintons has changed so much since her campaign
I used to be crazy about Bill, and admired his intelligence etc etc etc.

I liked Hillary ok, but wanted a candidate who didn't vote for the war.
Also, I didn't like the dynasty thing, we needed change and this was like monarchy.

But this campaign has been an eye opener and it has been flat out awful.

I wish they had stuck with Bill retired and Hillary in the Senate - except that
I still hold her war vote against her. She's too smart to not know what would happen.

82. She knew what she was saying.
Hellary said almost the same thing in a March 6 interview with time magazine. It isnt an innocent mistake. Politicians careers begin and end with words. This must stop on her part. She should crawl back to whatever state of the month she is from. Just go away woman!

Get a clue! Look at the context of what Hillary actually said and why she was saying it!
