The Cardoza 40 : Exodus of Clinton Delegates Begins
By: Al Giordano

The endorsement by US Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-California) of Obama today sends an extremely firm message to the Clinton campaign, and not only because he was, until today, a Clinton superdelegate.

The Field has learned that Cardoza is the first of a group of at least 40 Clinton delegates, many of them from California, that through talking among themselves came to a joint decision that all of them would vote for Obama at the convention. They have informed Senator Clinton that it’s time to unite around Obama, and that they will be coming out, one or two at a time, and announcing their switch between now and the convention if Senator Clinton doesn’t do the same.

Cardoza is one of the leaders of this effort (which includes not only superdelegates, but here’s something that should set off some paranoia in Camp Clinton: there are pledged Clinton delegates in “The Cardoza 40,” too). One Field Hand reports that during a recent Cardoza fundraising event in California the effort was discussed openly in front of other Democrats. Cardoza’s announcement, today, sent the message that the effort is serious and for real.

This is not “excellent news for Hillary Clinton.”

An exodus of 40 delegates from Clinton to Obama, mathematically, increases his lead by 80 delegates, because she loses one for every one he gains.

3. I believe so but considering the ' RFK ' remarks today by Hillary, it might provide the needed
smoke-screen reason for undecided delegates to begin making their support for Obama public.

2. I hope that this is true. Brokaw's 50 never really came out for Obama.

4. I think they did, really
they just didn't come out en masse as Brokaw seemed to suggest they would.

6. I think that story was just like the WSJ claiming that Obama would get the enitre NC delegation
That ended up being false too.

13. I don't recall that being his suggestion.
The way I remember it, he said they'd probably be rolling them out in the coming weeks. That doesn't really imply either an all-at-once or gradual release. I could be wrong, but that's the way I remember him phrasing it.

5. My boy Dennis.
Late to the party, but at the right one.

What is your belief about the likelihood of a "mass defection" on Tuesday (all 40 announcing if Hillary doesn't end this by close of business Tuesday)?

8. I believe delegates (committed and un-committed) are taking inventory of their positions given the
recent " RFK " commentary by Hillary. Will 40 delegates abandon Hillary by Tuesday? Maybe. Its anybody's guess at this stage but this incident has not gone unnoticed by super-delegates and could provided the wavery-meek the needed reason to shift support over to Obama.

" It is time for Oregon super-delegates to end this. I am looking at you Ron Wyden and you Bill Bradbury and you Frank Dixon and you Wayne Kinney and you Gail Rasmussen and you Meredith Woods-Smith.

Do you condone Hillary Clinton using the specter of the assassination of Barack Obama as her rationale for staying in this race?

As long as you remain silent, as long as you sit on the sidelines the answer to many of us Oregon Democrats is: YES.

9. This shift of delegates from Hillary to Obama will become a flood.
Her recent SNAFU makes it almost certain that delegates all over will suddenly realize they'd better jump ship now, as waiting only makes them look worse.

11. Maybe this unexpected snafu happening at the beginning of a long weekend might prove to be a formula
for the wise delegates to get super-wiser and have themselves counted for Obama. I haven't seen Lanny on the tube to the rescue yet which might be a telling sign in itself......no one left but old Bill & Chelsea.

10. read on, Cardoza says he opposes the manipulating of DNC rules
in other words, he doesn't want to change the rules in order to
help Hillary win.

12. Well then that legitimate reason should be applied by all other super delegates.
Whats the use of having party rules if some aren't prepared to adhere to them.

14. ultimately, she threw herself on her sword.
If she didn't know how completely politically suicidal that remark was she is a blithering idiot. If she said it calculating that this would catalyze her swift end in the "Bataan Death March" primary then she is a noble self sacrificing hero. I'm going with blithering idiot on this one.

15. I agree with you wholeheartedly. She is a very sharp cookie lawyer who has represented many
highflying corporate clients and sat on boards galore. For laymen like us, we look up at the sky and say its blue whereas a lawyer will give you 10 different palettes of blue. They are trained to measure their words and thoughts to express their exact intentions. She mentioned the RFK remark once before a few months back and considering the recent tasteless Huckabee remark about Obama ducking from gun shots, she was quite aware of the underlying message her remarks would deliver. How many slips-of-the-tongue should we be fleeced into believing is attributed to her lack of sleep or being tired. I recall she and Bill tried to use the same lame excuse to explain away the ' Bosnia, ducking from gunfire ' story. These repeating patterns of calculated deception should present itself as a big RED flag of concern for voters as to what we could expect from her if she were to be elected into office.
