Obama Gave A Fantastic Speech Today In Miami...
And it's hardly gotten any attention. He covered so many important issues regarding Cuba, Latin America, South America, Mexico and Haiti. It was such an intelligent and comprehensive explanation of the problems in our hemispere and his policies to address so much that has been ignored for the last 8 years and mishandled prior to that.

On top of the impressive town hall the day before with the Jewish voters & the large rallies the last two days, he has done a great job of introducing himself in Florida. If he can spend more time in places like Florida he is going towin in a landslide.

Obama says his Cuba policy is based on 'Libertad'

By CHRISTOPHER WILLS – 7 hours ago

MIAMI (AP) — Sen. Barack Obama, who once said he would meet Cuban leader Raul Castro without preconditions, added Friday that he would do so "only when we have an opportunity to advance the interests of the United States and to advance the cause of freedom for the Cuban people."

Any meeting would occur "at a time and place of my choosing," the likely Democratic presidential nominee told an audience of Cuban-Americans that applauded his remarks.

Obama said he would maintain the existing trade embargo to use as leverage for winning Democratic change in the Communist island nation. But he said he would immediately allow "unlimited family travel and remittances to the island."

"It's time to let Cuban-Americans see their mothers and fathers, their sisters and brothers. It's time to let Cuban-American money make their families less dependent upon the Castro regime," he said.

Obama made his remarks as part of his first extended trip through swing-state Florida, beginning a courtship that ordinarily would have occurred much earlier in the year. But the state's Jan. 29 primary date violated Democratic National Committee rules, and the party's presidential hopefuls observed a ban on campaigning.

Obama, in Miami, Calls for Engaging With Cuba
By JEFF ZELENY

MIAMI — Senator Barack Obama on Friday called for greater engagement with Cuba and Latin America, saying the long-standing policies of isolation have failed to advance the interests of the United States or help people who have suffered under oppressive governments.

In a speech before an influential Cuban-American group here, Mr. Obama said he would meet with the Cuban leader, Raúl Castro, “at a time and place of my choosing.” He derided Senator John McCain and other Republican critics as embracing what he called hard-line approaches that have failed.

“John McCain’s been going around the country talking about how much I want to meet with Raúl Castro, as if I’m looking for a social gathering or I’m going to invite him over and have some tea,” Mr. Obama said. “That’s not what I said, and John McCain knows it. After eight years of the disastrous policies of George Bush, it is time to pursue direct diplomacy, with friend and foe alike, without preconditions.”

Mr. Obama appeared before the Cuban American National Foundation days after Mr. McCain outlined a sharply different approach in a speech in Miami. He said Mr. Obama was naïve to think he could hold direct diplomatic talks with Mr. Castro and other foreign leaders who are considered enemies.

The back-and-forth highlighted the divergent foreign policy approaches of the two candidates and underscored the significant role that Cuba policy could play in the general election. Mr. Obama’s decision to address a constituency that has traditionally leaned Republican — but among some younger voters is changing — signaled his intent to compete aggressively in Florida, a state that could be a critical battleground.

8. there is one of his Maitland speech caught by a video cam as
the press was not allowed in to that one. I agree, though. The fundraiser in Maitland drew the most funds ever for a candidate (almost half a million it is rumored) and the one in Sunrise also had a "first" although I forgot what I just read.

Here is the link for the Maitland one. Make sure your speakers are turned down. This is the one where I gave him the mustard seed....

But, what do you expect from the lunchbucket crowd? Remember, we got him for a bargain price....heck, the hors d'oerves probably cost me all of my donation....

22. Obama's speech today is a big disappointment to people who follow
democracy in Latin America.

He slanted it, I hope, to appeal to the older conservative Cuban community-- which, since they are now in the minority, is not a very smart move.

He's still talking about political prisoners in Cuba as if we're not much worse offenders. He seems to not know that there has been a wave of democracy sweeping Latin America for the last 15 years and he's still talking down.

He said he'd keep the embargo in place when that has been a long insanity.

On and on.

Good grief.

so, I believe that he will do what is right.

He stated that his policies will be based on what is good for the people, not the governments. And that is exactly how he will shape his policies.

He also stated "We are trapped in the 80's".

That what his speech pinpointed.....

Let him get in there.

27. He's talking like someone who has no idea what is happening in Latin America.
Since Clinton and Bush were so busy in the Middle East, democracy in Latin America has flowered.

Those governments he's putting down -- they're doing much, much better since we've been mostly out of there. Except for the government in Colombia, which is a terrorist regime, that today he said he'd support via the drug program that just gets civilians killed with chain saws.

And, this was the kicker for me, he called Chavez an authoritarian when our own government has done its authoritarian best to get him killed or kicked out of the office he was elected to.

The Obama campaign today tried to appeal to the extreme right of their Latino voters. That was pretty awful.

37. Sounds like the embargo will remain in place, Americans not of Cuban origin
will still be forbidden from traveling there, etc.

This really is a pander to those angry old fascists in Miami, who have had far too much control over U.S. foreign policy for too long--to say nothing of their iron grip on Florida politics.

It's disappointing, to say the least, almost as disappointing as seeing so many people in this thread breathlessly declaring that this same old hateful policy is something brave and new and wonderful.

as part of the US region anyway. There will be 10 regions, remember? You get us....

And, don't be fooled by the Superhighway debunking done today. That, too, is real. Rudy is working on it in Texas....

I think it is too late for one man to turn back what the rest have put in place. All he can do is control it and make sure it happens right and I think that is all he or anyone can do now.

Hold on.

44. I don't think the U.S. blew anything...
the U.S. blows up things. I read recently where the CIA is more active in Venezuela than ever before. I can't imagine how our country could get out from under the grip that our Defense Industry has on us. The only think we lead in is weapons..and our Foreign Policy is based solely on the needs of American Business Interests. Weapons need wars. I don't know how you change all that. And I don't know how you get elected if you pose a threat to any of that. I'm not too knowledgeable about foreign policy...but it seems to me that the truth is rarely spoken...and for good reason.

OK - I gave HRC a chance to voice all her thoughts and think that she had a right to try and win this election, BUT it is OVER now! We need her out of the picture so comments like the one's Obama voiced yesterday can get out there in the MSM and not the remarks of a so called "tired" candidate who is trying to over power his message!
