"I did not in any way mean to imply that Senator Obama could be killed, and I sincerely apologize to anyone who might have taken my statements that way."

That's all she had to say in her "apology" yesterday. But she didn't. She left the implication hanging there in the air, apologizing instead to the Kennedys, completely missing the point at best. For a candidate that's usually so careful with her words, this omission is suspect.

Especially since she DID NOT imply something should happen to Senator Obama.

There are plenty of other examples of primary fights lasting through June that didn't involve anyone getting shot.

She never said "anything can happen" near the referenece to the RFK assassination. Those are 2 independent conversations. The first is about scandals, the second is about June.

Maybe she wants to kill June though. That's possible.

If she didn't say anything wrong, then why is everyone--not just "Obamaniacs" at DU, but virtually everyone--talking about it? Whether or not that's what she intended, It was clear by the time she addressed her statements that they were being interpreted in that way. And yet she did nothing to refute that interpretation, choosing instead to apologize to the Kennedys, who had no reason as far as I can tell to be particularly offended.

I don't believe that Sen. Clinton intentionally implied that an assassination could possibly happen to Barack Obama in this campaign. However, the particular words she used yesterday unfortunately do seem to contain that implication.

The implication IS there, whether she intended it or not, and she should have moved immediately to quash that interpretation if she didn't intend it. But she didn't address that at all.

There really is no getting around it. Her 'shit happens like assassinations' remark can't be unspoken.

For the same reason why her use of the word assasination in the first place was beyond the pale. Some things should not literally be put into words by a person with Clinton's public standing. But she can acknowledge that her words inadvertantly reopened a terrible psychic wound in America, and that she agrees with the reaction from Obama's campaign, they were unfortunate and there is no room in this campaign for them. She can say that though what her words may have implied were not her true intent that she won't make excuses for herself, it was clearly the wrong thing to say, and she apologizes to Senator Obama, to Senator Kennedy, and to the American people for the inappropriateness of her comments and the pain they have caused. She can add that a long campaign like this is a grueling endeavor which does not always afford the opportunity to reflect on the full implications of every thing one might say, but on reflection she understands why her choice of words was so profoundly unsettling to so many Americans. She is sorry she spoke them, and she hopes her apology helps those who have been hurt by them in some way to move on from here to us working together for a future all Americans can be proud of.
