Hillary Clinton's candidacy has done feminism no favours
Hillary Clinton's candidacy has done feminism no favours

By Camille Paglia
Last Updated: 12:01pm BST 24/05/2008

When the dust settles over the 2008 election, will Hillary Clinton have helped or hindered women's advance toward the US presidency?
Right now, Hillary is in Godzilla mode, refusing to accept Barack Obama's looming nomination and threatening to tie the Democratic party in legal knots until the August convention and beyond.

Those who think she will withdraw gracefully in a few weeks are living in cloud cuckoo land. The Clintons are ruthless scrappers who will lock their bulldog teeth in any bloody towel.

In her raw ambition and stubborn, grinding energy, Hillary will certainly cast a long shadow on young women aspiring to high office. She is both inspiring role model and cringe-making bad example — an overtly feminist careerist who never found a way to succeed without her husband's connections, advice, and intervention.

Bill Clinton may have masterminded Hillary's runs for the Senate and for the Democratic nomination, but he has been a gross liability in recent months, as he has co-opted the hustings to maunder on about himself or to inject divisive racial overtones into the debate.

7. She's American and considered one of the World's top Intellectuals
Camille Anna Paglia (born April 2, 1947 in Endicott, New York) is an American social critic, author and teacher. Her book, Sexual Personae: Art and Decadence from Nefertiti to Emily Dickinson , published in 1990, became a bestseller. Since 1984 she has been a Professor at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Paglia describes herself as a feminist and as a Democrat who voted for Bill Clinton and Ralph Nader, and even campaigned for John F. Kennedy as an adolescent

Why do people keep forgetting that Carol Mosely Braun ran for president in 2004?

20. Because she never had a chance.
She was a one term Senator who made a lot of mistakes.

And by the way, Cynthia McKinney, a former Democrat who is now running for President as a Green- is the one who deserves more attention.

6. There was actually a good discussion of this on Meet the Press
No one can deny that sexism has existed, but to imply that she is losing because of it, underscores the progress that female politicans have made simply by virtue of Hillary Clinton being able to win the white men demographic.

11. This is very good, thanks!
a good counterbalance after I just finished reading HRC's article in the NY Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2008/05/25/2008-05-25_hillary_why_i_continue_to_run.html?page=0, in case you missed it) and was feeling like throwing something at my monitor.

13. If it was her campaign who sent out all the people to tell us that
non gender specific adjectives like monster were sexist, than yes she's caused a lot of embarrassment. Being a victim does not make one appear strong.

14. I was actually kind of offended right from the get-go when she said "let's chat"
Hillary's campaign has always been kind of ham-handed and tin-earish to me.

When she sat in that ad like she was launching a new Dinah Shore show and said, "let's have a conversation, let's CHAT" I was overcome with disbelief. I hated the choice of words. I found it denigrating and demeaning to the issues at hand.

Yeah, lets chat about being misled into war and ripping up the Constitution and torturing people and outing CIA agents. I was not interested in f!@#ing chatting about these things!!!!!!

She got off on a very bad foot with me because of this assine intro to her campaign.

17. I agree.
The "conversation" thing was offputting to me from the start, for the same exact reasons. I still might have voted for her back then, had she won the nomination. It's been all downhill from there, in my opinion. :(

18. Hillary's run has damaged feminism
Her early campaign was a triumph of feminism but her later campaign has often been a catalogue of negative stereotypes about feminism; the refusal to own her own mistakes, the rampant projection, the double standard and most of all, the unearned victim mentality. The Clinton's campaign endless cries of sexism, directed at seemingly the entire world, only made it harder for both Clinton and her more sensible supporters to highlight actual sexism when it occured. In essence, she used sexism (of which, there were plenty of genuine examples, such as Chris Matthews) not as an opportunity to interact, educate or discuss (as Obama did so memorably about race) but as a blunt weapon to bludgeon her opponants, even when they hadn't said or done anything remotely sexist. She used sexism not as something to be overcome but as a weapon to be used by her campaign and, in doing so, damaged feminism.
