I remember a somewhat-connected mom at my kids' elementary school, years ago, talking about how great it was going to be - to have Terry McAuliffe as DNC chair. "He's SO GREAT at fund-raising!," she said, gushingly. I remember thinking - well, okay. That's very nice. But it's what we DO with all that money that counts. Hopefully he can engineer some solid wins for us. Which he DIDN'T.

It doesn't matter if you can raise 100 TRILLION dollars for your candidate. If that candidate gets beaten, WTF was all that money for? And how did it get spent so unwisely? Frickin' NOTHING to show for it, for all his much-vaunted fund-raising brilliance. None of that made a speck of difference where it counted. You have to do more for your party than just fund-raise. You have to chart a course, and map out a strategy that will yield wins where it counts (Exhibit A: Howard Dean's "50-State Strategy" that, implemented once he got the DNC chairmanship in early 2005, started to pay dividends - ie: RESULTS - as quickly as the very next election - in 2006). You have to be able to lead your party to VICTORY with all that money. You have to do things with all that money that help you WIN. And he DIDN'T. I have yet to see where he ever did. He lost us TWO Presidential election cycles in a row (especially the first one that should have been a no-brainer - and he didn't engineer an effective fight to keep it from getting close enough for the bushies to steal), plus a midterm election (2002) that got us absolutely NOWHERE. And he's about to lose again - as far as his candidate's campaign is concerned.

RESULTS, Terry. RESULTS. RESULTS are what we pay for, what we donate for, what we work for, what we keep coughing it up for (in more than just bucks, but also time, energy, ideas, and dedication). RESULTS, Terry. That's all that counts. That's the ONLY thing that counts. RESULTS. RESULTS, Terry. RESULTS. All the fund-raising in the world isn't worth a cold, stale turd if it doesn't get RESULTS.

So far his results and a dime will get you a few minutes in some parking meter.
