Unity Thread, If you dare!
Been thinking. What would happen if Obama and Clinton, who each hold about half the party each, decided and agreed to campaign together until the convention. Not as Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates, but as the Democratic Party.

Arrange for four votes at the convention. The first vote would be on an Obama/Clinton Ticket. The second would be on a Clinton/Obama ticket. The third vote would be on Clinton or Obama as the Presidential candidate without the other on the ticket. Given the results of these three votes, the one with the highest vote total would be voted again to confirm the result and the party would go with that.

This would end the current race and turn the attention of both Obama and his supporters and Clinton and her supporters toward running against McCain. It would give the two halves of the Democratic Party a chance to come together and give the two candidates a chance to campaign together before the convention. If things go well the delegates will know it. If they do not, they will know that too.

The order of the votes or the number of votes could be modified. I am looking at a way to bring the supporters of both candidates to get behind the party and focus on the race against McCain. When a primary season in decisive the convention is a formality. This year neither candidate will get the number of delegate needed without the super delegates.

Open for comment, suggestions and other party unifying and Republican defeating ideas!

Cheers.

6. Cute...
you are probably right, but wouldn't it be interesting to see them on the same side without having to commit to either one? I did say interesting, not preferable. Clearly you would like to see Obama on top and I would like to see Clinton on top.

3. Ugh.
Sorry, this would not unify the party. Switching rules in the middle of a campaign.

4. I am just saying that the opportunity exists to see if it would work and...
then decide. I am less worried about the rules if both sides agreed to amend them. Though that has not worked in Mi and Fl.

We must win in November.

9. Just imagine who this would self-destruct the party.
People have had enough this year with being creative with the rules. Just my opinion.

12. Thanks for responding. You are probably right, but...
I don't want to look back the day after the election and wonder what the hell just happened, again. And, what we could have done that we didn't.

15. Then start looking forward right now and start working for Team OBAMA
We will need every bit of financial support, activism, door-knocking and positive talk that we can get.

17. My plan is to support Hillary until she prevails or drops out and then support our nominee...
Edited on Tue May-27-08 06:03 PM by liberalcommontater
Although I would like to be able to support both.

Win in November.

5. The DLC will not be appeased with the excuse of "unity".
Democrats will vote for the nominee. We don't need to perpetuate the bullshit policies of the last 28 years in order to make that happen.

10. Which policies are you referring to?
This idea may only expose more disunity so as an antidote to disunity it might be the dumbest idea of the day. But, what I am thinking is for all of us to win, go into the convention unified and come out energized beyond what either candidate could do alone.

Are you sure the current arrangement will achieve this?

16. Well that is my motive...
I have always said that the only way to fight with a woman is to run. So, instead of fighting, something else?

20. I'll take my chances the way they are..
with Obama taking this win soon, fair and square. Whatever happens at the convention, if Hillary wants to go to the people, and let the people speak, then I'll take my chances with this. Besides, this is more about 2012 for her than it is for 2008. And has been for awhile.

19. You'd have to completely alter the rules for the conduct of the convention
I think an Obama/Clinton ticket will be the end result and we'll see it within weeks.
