Do you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of former President Ronald Reagan?

unfavorable at the time he was President, and unfavorable now. He is the one who ruined our country.

Empty suit, not very bright, total BS, no substance, and did a load of damage. How's that for an unfavorable opinion! (and I am just getting going)....

Human interactions in a reasonably civilized fashion.

Beyond that he was an unmitigated disaster, and sowed the seeds of Bushism, the bitter harvest of which we are suffering under now.

My son, who is now 24, says his earliest memory is of me shooting rubber bands at the TV set every time Reagan came on! I couldn't even stand the sight of him.

In Germany, when he laid the wreath on the Nazi SS grave site and he was supposed to lay it on the American GI's gravesite.

Waffen SS. Reagan did not lay the wreath. General Ridgeway and General Steinhoff laid the wreath at the foot of the monument at the cemetary.

But I just wish he would have gone out in mind-shredding pain.

It's great that people had an unfavorable opinion of him, but don't go in the same direction as the freepers who danced when Ted Kennedy had a tumor et al.

However I think he was a disaster for the Mentally ill in this country and CA.

"Aids", simply because he was homophobic...little did he know that his inaction would impact the US in staggering death statistics and billions of dollars in health cost. There is your Reagan legacy.

The world was improved when he died.

That said, I really like his son, Ron. Interesting that he could grow up in a uber-Republican family and turn out a progressive.

The only thing he ever did for me was to fuck up the work situation so bad in my midwestern hometown that I was forced to move to the West Coast.

Living out here is the silver lining of those horrible 8 years, 12 years if you count GHWB's seamless segue.

I used to have to listen to them in the car with my dad. He had them on tape. I should have called social services.

Of course our current chief in thief is guilty of the same. Unfavorable for him too.

Not to say Ronnie never signed a decent piece of legislation. He WAS responsible for the economic crash which his veep (Bush) reaped while in office.

He was a dipshit when he was governer in Cal. he did immeasurable damage there and then they let him do the same thing to the country.. complete idiot.

So, I guess I have that to thank him for.

He was the worst president in our history, until the current one. And the current one would never have been possible if he hadn't laid the ground work.

family and we went to see him at a Lincoln day dinner. I thought he was a hysterical person to run for public office and not very sharp. During the 80s I was overseas and would bet with the senior staff of the US Embassy that he would not be elected President - both times - cost me a fortune.

Living outside the US we didn't see his TV appearences as President and what we read made him look like a fool. It was just a mystery to me.

He started all this deregulation-mania that our entire society is paying a terrible price for now.

the man and his followers not only put this nation on hold, they actually reversed much of the progress made!

But I hear he did a middling job playing "the guy in white hat" in b-movies.

Since before the election in 1980. We saw friends and neighbors voting for Reagan with wild enthusiasm who months later lost their jobs because of his policies. Our oldest sons graduated from high school in the early years of his reign and could find no jobs that would have allowed them to move out or get an education; everything was cut and the recession was deeper than now. My husband's job, at Reynold's Metals became 12/7 much of Reagan's term. After a while they even ceased to ask if he wanted the extra work and just scheduled it and stopped hiring altogether (for the next 19 years until the company collapsed). His union, the United Steelworkers, lost negotiation after negotiation on pay raises and plant safety.

But really, compared to the last 7 1/2 years, Reagan's presidency was nirvana.

On its own terms, his presidency had a lot of bad effects regarding concentration of wealth and power.

But: Inflation really was a serious problem, and he stood by Paul Volcker to raise interest rates enough to shock the country out of it. That seemed to actually work and painful as it was to those who lost jobs at the time, the net amount of pain was probably less than was being caused by the ongoing inflation.

Also, at least Reagan had the sense to work with Gorbachev when the offers started coming.

I have an unfavorable opinion of him.

After all, he was just following the advice of Nancy's astrologer!!!!!!

Back to the Future

I grew up with kids who were much older than I, so I had a foul mouth from the 1st grade. I made South Park kids look tame.

Upon Reagan's election my teacher brought in a picture of the man to teach us who our president was (I doubt there was anything ideological, just educational). The man looked plastic in this picture--a Brill-cream add gone horribly wrong.

So I said, "He looks like Frankenstein." The kids laughed. I waited for the pause. And continued: "like Frankenstein's alcoholic mother peed on him."

Detention--2 weeks. Fuckin' Reagan. Parents were notified. They laughed. I got grounded. But they laughed.
