Joan Walsh in Salon: "A new low in Clinton bashing"
Joan Walsh comments on The Emperor's New Gaffe in Salon. At one point, she says "the Clinton-hate is in danger of damaging the Democratic Party," which has GOT to be the understatement of the century!

For several months I've found myself bothered by a double standard in both the behavior and the media coverage of the Obama campaign, as supposedly representing a new kind of clean, post-partisan politics, by contrast with the dirty old win-at-any-cost Clintons. Hardball Obama campaign tactics -- David Axelrod partly blaming Clinton for Benazir Bhutto's death; the intimidation of Clinton voters by a pro-Obama union in Nevada (to be fair, some Obama supporters claimed intimidation by Clinton forces, too); the campaign's infamous South Carolina race memo (prepared before Bill Clinton made his dumb Jesse Jackson remark); the multiple "Harry and Louise" mailers distorting Clinton's healthcare proposal; not to mention ties between Obama, Axelrod and the Exelon Corp., even as Obama is touting his lobbyist-free campaign....

o argue that she was suggesting she's staying in the race because Obama might be assassinated -- even after both Clinton, and the journalists who interviewed her, said her reference was to RFK's June campaign, not to his heartbreaking murder -- requires either a special kind of paranoia or venal political opportunism.

21. That "asshole" is Joe Madison, who is a lifelong activist...
... and has worked tirelessly to make the world aware of Sudanese slavery, among many other noble things.

Just because he's not supporting your gal doesn't make him an "asshole." I wonder when the last time Joan Walsh went on a hunger strike to protest the Sudanese government?

You people grow more shameless by the day. :eyes:

4. So ... Is she a "fighter" or a "victim" ...
Seriously ...

She transformed herself halfway through the campaign into the "fighter" who has stood up to right wing and will fight them tooth and nails ... NOW, she is a victim ???

How can you claim to be a fighter while at the same time claiming to be a victim ...

That aside, as Jon Stewart aptly noted last night ... You can now add the "vast left wing conspiracy" to the right wing one, and basically EVERYONE is out to get Hillary ... Either pathetic political posturing or a serious case of paronoia ...

7. Obama's Assassination Of The Truth
Obama's Assassination Of The Truth

http://tominpaine.blogspot.com/2008/05/rfk-assassination-character.html

"Bill Burton from the Obama campaign and Barack Obama himself responding to Clinton's remarks about RFK immediately issued a statement that Clinton's remarks "were unfortunate and had no place in the campaign".Just in case the idiots in the news media didn't get the point Burton included a link to a NY Post story referencing Obama's early secret service protection and that he had been the recipient of threats.

The implication that the Obama campaign was trying to convey and which many in the media swallowed like trained seals catching a fish, was that her remarks implied that she was staying in the race just in case someone knocked off Obama. The press dutifully behaved like the trained seals they have been since the beginning and swallowed the fish that was thrown to them, then blew their horns.

Keith Olbermann, who tries every night to be the Value Meal version of Edward R. Murrow, swallowed the fish, and did some of the biggest tricks, throwing his head around with the fish in his mouth, eating it, then blowing the horn the loudest as he joined the growing list of pro Obama journalists making total fools out of themselves, shredding their credibility worse than it was before. Anyone who watched Olbermann give you your Value Meal dollar's worth saw that he had his knee jerking uncontrollably while he spat out the the word "assassination".

She is supposed to look like she is a Dem and talk like a Dem.

So how does one explain that she runs an organization that could actually have a decent writer covering the election machinery issues, and the stolen election machinery issues, but instead employs the journalist Farhad Manjoo.

He is to a discussion of election machinery as the Republicans are to gay marriage.

I think that she is a troll.

If Salon wants to cut it these days, for something other than their content focusing on kinky sex, they need to find themselves a print version of Rachel Maddow, and fast!

25. It is just not sensible to say that Hillary didn't know what was coming out of her mouth
The way Bill Clinton parses language, it's obvious he is well aware of the vagueries of communication. And Hillary is not a stupid woman, regardless of what she wants to convey to the public.
Weren't there other campaign snafus that she could have mentioned other than assassination? Especially in the context of Huckabee's recent gaffe it is just ridiculous that she wouldn't be implying the connection everyone else made.
How about referring to a possible "bimbo eruption" like Gennifer Flowers. She could speak from actual experience about that.

That is the great failing of the intelligent who use their cerebral power to manipulate the less intelligent. Words are twisted and parsed and when they are called on it, they have arguments about what they really meant or the real meaning of a word.

It's not a leadership quality I admite, but I do grant that it is found admirable by others.

Golly, just because The Huckster's gruesome attempt at humor -- joking at an NRA convention about Barack ducking bullets-- was a big story? Just because that horrible gaffe was played and replayed during the week that preceded her remarks, she should have refrained? Just because of that she should have changed her list of JUNE EXAMPLES? Aw golly, guys, that would be so tough on her.

Sorry, she is all wet and totally wrong about this "sexism" thing against Clinton and about everyone picking on Clinton.

Clinton, if anything, has been treated overly favorably by the press and pundits.

Losers try to blame others for their mistakes. If you recall, Hillary STILL hasn't admitted her vote for the Iraq War was a mistake or that she was fooled or that she chose a political vote over the right vote for the country.

Some things never change. This is why HRC will never be President.

Really...interested in knowing why you would think such a thing.

(BTW...I saw whatshername on Hardball...she really is out on the limb. I'm a middle aged, white, working woman, who became a feminist of sorts at about age 15, when I read my first women's rights magazine article. I am pretty much atuned to sexism. Clinton really has not experienced much sexism....a few statements by low level people. One blatant one by Chris Matthews early on, that he apologized for. But someone complementing her on her tangerine-colored jacket, when she chooses to wear a tangerine-colored jacket while being in the center spot in a televised debate, while all other debaters were in customary dark suits - is not sexist at all. It WAS a pretty jacket. And someone who wears a tangerine-colored jacket WANTS attention, obviously. That's how silly the sexism charges are.)

But if it is progressive politics that you want, Salon is to progressive politics as the Republicans are to gay marriage.

I miss the old (good) Salon.

58. And that has what to do with the fact there is Clinton bashing?
BTW, I don't agree with your comment about Salon being non-progressive. It's inane because a lot of people can see the Clinton bashing no matter what their political persuasion may be. There are a lot of progressive feminists and progressives in general who can see the Clinton bashing and probably a lot of non-progressives.

62. Would there be ANY Clinton bashing if Clinton had

Not stumbled down the road of karma that she choose.

To many of us, Senator Clinton had a choice to make in November 2004.

An important choice. That election BELONGED TO WE THE PEOPLE!! But she had her eyes on the Prize of running for the Presidency in 2008. So rather than go down th road that Barbara Boxer went down, and denounce the voting machinery, denounce the slippery tactics that deprived voters in Ohio of the right to vote, she capitalized on it.

And why was it the penniless voting activists who tried to put in out there. And to change things.
While Clinton scolded Edwards as he became insistent that every vote be counted before Kerry conceded.

I indict Senator Clinton for her failure to speak out about what she knew to be true - that the election was stolen. Because of that we face the 2008 election with the same crummy machinery, the same Repug-installed Registrar of Voters in almost every county in this country. If she and others in places of influence had spoken out, it would have gotten media play. And things might have changed. Instead, if memory serves, only Senator Boxer stood up and denounced the 2004 election.

Other voting rights activists also indict her.

And despite that, I have stood up for Sen Clinton when I saw topics on this forum abt such things as her "cackle" or people using the B word.

But GODDAMN it to hell, any person who could keep her mouth shut about what happened in Ohio in NOvember of 2004 deserves what has happened to her. Even the things that were unfair. Because the wheel of karma is like that. Ignore the needs of a country for your own political will and your own insatiable demand to be President and the wheels of karma just might kick you in your self-serving Ass!

When I think of the last four years under Bush, I end up thinking of How it helped Hillary that Kerry conceded, and her role in that. Her running in 2008 meant that she was willing to put this country, and the nation of Iraq through hell.

If she is a Democrat then I do not know what it means be a Democrat. She is NOT an environmentalist, - you can't say you are one in one breath and than claim you'll NUKE Iran in the next. Her health plan matches Richard Nixon's and does not expunge the BIG HEALTH INSURANCE people out of the payment loop.

88. I was a Salon subcriber for several years UNTIL the 2004 crap.
The author's name is Farhad Manjoo, and he USED TO BE one of their star political writers. He is still with Salon, but has been relegated to the "lesser" beats--garden parties, recipes and crafts.

51. I am about ready to stop my subscription to Salon.
Walsh is really out of line in her Clinton support, and she is the editor in chief.

They went after Dean in 04.

73. She is a troll, nothing more, nothing less.
After watching the video of yesterday's Hardball episode,w ith Walsh claiming that Obama's campaign was behind the public's antural reaction of disgust over the Clinton gaffe, I was appalled.

How can any sane person blame the Obama campaign for a natural reaction to the Clinton mis-speak?

I was happy that Matthews had a journalist for the Obama side on to dispute Walsh's claim. The American progressive community does not want assassination raised in a provocative way whether done in an above board manner or subliminally!!

63. Good. We need a Rachel Maddow style person (Man or woman I don't care)
In that editorial spot.

Someone who can avoid being a lap dog for the corporations and for BIG MONEY INTERESTS as we know it.

When I see Walsh on TV, I cringe. She knows far less than many of us here on DU.

I'll rest assured that this country is a democracy when the talking heads on their TV shows turn to someone like sfexpat and ask her to come on Prime Time!

...and even she sees the insanity of many of his supporters, so take note.

55. So the campaign that tried to make an issue of Obama's kindergarten paper is whining?
Axelrod never said HRC was responsible for Bhutto's death and the other stories are just that... as for negative mailers, ferchrissakes, does Walsh want to go down that road?

Walsh is a shill for a losing campaign. Next thing you know, she's going to call the World sexist...

Piss off Joan.

That was a well crated statement by hillary to invoke exactly what is happening now - clinton supporters whinning and moaning
that, "everybody is picking on me, everybody is picking on hillary, everybody is picking on bill, every body is picking on chelsea.

Oh God what a bunch of sore losers and whinners. Imagine, someone picking on the clintons - the most ruthless politicians to ever
walk the face of the earth.

Why don't all of you clitonaide drinkers give it up! (please)
