"Let me also comment on the oft-stated argument that Kerry’s Vietnam award’s were “vetted” at every level. Let me assure you that awards in the military are handed out like cotton candy, especially during war. An award of the Medal of Honor will usually receive great scrutiny. The Navy Cross will also be looked at closely. Beneath these two, awards are handed out rather easily. In fact, many commanders “go to the mat” to get their people various awards. The idea that every level of command somehow verifies every award is terribly misleading. A command will look at the alleged facts surrounding the award recommendation and determine if the alleged facts meet the criteria for the particular award being recommended.

I am not making light of Bronze and Silver Stars. However, does anyone have any idea how many Bronze and Silver Stars were awarded during Vietnam"
