Pelosi says that if she has to, she'll intervene and prevent a showdown at the convention
Does she have the ability to do so? Maybe. `One thing's certain, if Hillary decides to stay in after Obama is officially the presumptive dem nominee, she'll have very little support from party insiders and SDs. And at that point, she really will burn all her political bridges.

Pelosi vows to prevent fight at Dem convention

"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she will step in if necessary to make sure the presidential nomination fight between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama does not reach the Democratic National Convention - though she believes it could be resolved as early as next week.

Pelosi predicted Wednesday that a presidential nominee will emerge in the week after the final Democratic primaries on June 3, but she said "I will step in" if there is no resolution by late June regarding the seating of delegates from Florida and Michigan, the two states that defied party rules by holding early primaries.

"Because we cannot take this fight to the convention," she said. "It must be over before then."

Pelosi made the comments during a wide-ranging hourlong session with The Chronicle's editorial board. She talked about the prospects for the election of a Democratic president this fall, the legacy of President Bush and the California Supreme Court's ruling legalizing same-sex marriage.

The speaker talked in depth about the party's dilemma as its primary process comes to a close after Sunday's Puerto Rico primary, in which 55 delegates are at stake, and Tuesday's South Dakota and Montana primaries, in which 33 total delegates are up for grabs."

1. A Triumverate of Democratic Power Can Do It
Nancy Pelosi
Harry Reid
Al Gore

Those three could put it to bed by endorsing, and they will. There is too much riding on this election for them not to do it.

all it takes is three of the four.

2. I guess it depends on how much pull she has with the SDs.
No matter what happens at this point, I don't think Clinton will *still* cry foul.

3. Pelosi has more pull with SDs (at least those in the House) than
any other individual. For obvious reasons.

4. I think perhaps she may be hinting at the "Pelosi club" delegates.
She'll probably swing those towards Obama if he is leading after Wednesday.

5. It's not just the declared "Pelosi Club" members
If you're a House member, and you want a certain committee assignment, it's beneficial to you to please Pelosi. Just the way it works.

6. About 100 SDs need to MOVE NOW..so that the whole thing is MOOT
and all SDs should sign pledges, vowing to NOT change their votes..same for pledged delegates..

As long as Obama's alive, Hillie still thinks she "has a chance":puke:

"... said Alice Germond, secretary of the Democratic National Committee and a member of the rules panel.
We want ultimately to resolve it so we can stop talking about the process at the beginning of June and start talking about our nominee."

"We want this to be the final stop on this train," said a DNC official, speaking on condition of anonymity. "We don't want to see this challenged again. That just extends the pain."

Committee members are receiving a level of attention they neither imagined nor particularly wanted. One, Garry Shay, a former chairman of the Los Angeles Democratic Party, said he was receiving as many as 500 e-mails a day, which he tries to read and answer. "It's horrible; it's horrible," he said.

Summarizing the correspondence, Shay said: "Some of it is very emotional. Some is very dry and rules-based. Some of it is short. Some is very long and detailed, and some is threatening, as in, 'I won't vote for the other guy.' "

Clinton loyalists are expected to demonstrate outside the hotel. The Obama campaign has urged its supporters to stand down. "We don't think it's a helpful dynamic to create chaos," said David Plouffe, Obama's campaign manager. "In the interest of party unity, we're encouraging our supporters not to protest."

38. Freshmen, in particular.
I wonder where they'd like their office located after defying her. I wonder what committee assignments they'd like - ones that have NOTHING to do with their constituents? Urban congresscritters just love committe assignments on fisheries, agriculture, or forestry, right? Uh-huh.

11. That's what she does best.
Avoiding showdowns.

She just takes issues that take courage to confront off the table.

Who gets the nomination for president is not nearly as crucial to me as whether or not Golub can defeat Pelosi and remove her from her position of so-called "leadership."

13. If Hillary is still insisting on staying in after June 4th...
then I don't think what transpires next will be pretty. I think most SDs are waiting for all the voting to be wrapped up before announcing their choice, which makes perfect sense given how close we are to the end of the process. Come June 4th, if Hillary is still eluding to remaining in, I'd be willing to bet she gets a not-so-polite push out the door.

They don't want to call it before everyone votes. I have the feeling the SD floodgates will open after the last election next week.

28. If you don't think Pelosi as Speaker wields enormous power
over the dem caucus in the House, you know very little about the realities of politics.

And gee, I hate to break this to you, but her refusal to consider impeachment has nothing to do with this.

Anyone who doesn't understand what Pelosi brings with her endorsement is either deluding themselves or flat ignorant.

behind the scenes for weeks. I think they've been holding off til the dnc meeting then PR, Montana and SD. I think they decided that the only way to get her out is to pile on all at once with every party leader and super delegate they can throw at her.

They've been biding their time to let it all play out and now that they've met all her demands, they know they will have nothing to regret. Her time is up June 3rd. They know how important it is to get this party united as soon as possible.
