White women cold towards Obama

May 29, 2008

Barack Obama’s favorability ratings among white women have declined significantly in recent months, particularly among Democrats and independents, presenting an immediate obstacle for the likely Democratic nominee as he moves to shore up his party’s base.

According to a new report by The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, half of white women now have a negative perception of Obama.

Forty-nine percent of white women view Obama unfavorably, while only 43 percent hold a favorable opinion. In February, 36 percent of these women viewed Obama unfavorably, while 56 percent had a positive perception of the likely Democratic nominee.

Over the same period, Democratic white women’s negative view of Obama increased from 21 percent to 35 percent, while their positive view decreased from 72 percent to 60 percent — roughly the same rate as white women overall.

White men, in general and among Democrats, have shown only a slight drop-off in their perception of Obama — one-third of the shift seen in white women. About 20 percent of Democratic white men have an unfavorable view of Obama, a figure which has remained stable since February.

Pew also found that among self-described Clinton supporters, the negative shift against Obama is more severe among women than among men.

1. Fuck that.
I'm tired of people saying that about ME. I'm a white woman, 55 years old, and I'm cold towards CLINTON. And I know I'm not alone.

who's also cold towards Clinton and who can't wait to pull the lever for Obama this Tuesday in SD. I'm getting really sick of that, too.

98. 50% of New York Democrats Say Clinton Should Drop Out of White House Race

50% of New York Democrats Say Clinton Should Drop Out of White House Race

Rasmussen Reports Thursday, May 29, 2008

Fifty percent (50%) of New York Democrats say it’s time for Senator Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race for the White House. Just 43% believe she should keep going. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey also found that most New York Republicans—52%--want Clinton to keep striving for the nomination. Overall, among all Empire State voters, 45% believe she should drop out while 43% disagree.

Just 16% of New York Democrats think Obama should drop out of the race.

Forty-seven percent (47%) of New York voters believe Obama is the stronger general election candidate. Forty-three percent (43%) believe Clinton would be better.

The survey also found that Obama is now viewed more favorably than Clinton in New York. Sixty-two percent (62%) of New York voters have a favorable opinion of Barack Obama while 55% give Hillary Clinton such positive reviews. For Obama, those ratings are up four points from a month ago while Clinton’s are down three points. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, is viewed positively by 44%. His ratings are down six points from the previous survey. ...

I think it's just that some of the Hillary women supporters are such faux martyrs and bitch about everything that happens in the universe, saying it's sexism against Hillary, that it just SEEMS like there are more of them.

Kind of like you are asked to babysit a hyperactive kid....you know there is only one of them, but gull-durn if it doesn't seem like he's twins.

from under a rock and began their special kind of pseudo-journalism.

They're subversive like Tweety. They'll publish some quality articles, then TURN RIGHT and attack the democrats at the critical times. All to keep "the ruling political classes" - DLC and GOP in power.

It's a headline to a story I won't even bother to read.

To this white old lady, that headline reeks of tabloid-ism. Go for the splash!

Politico's use of words is using a clever way of creating talking points. I'm still suspicious of just who Politico is and what exactly their agenda is - if there is one.

But I suppose we're only allowed to post good news on here? Everything else must be filtered out on pain of being tombstoned. And some people have the gall to criticize Hillary supporters for having a hive mentality.

26. I doubt Obama himself is sexist.........
A man with a bright wife and two young daughters better not be. ;)

Perhaps women are feeling Obama's campaign hasn't really focused much energy on issues important to them. Maybe they are projecting the hostility they see and hear in everyday life, on tv, radio, the internet onto Obama a bit.
I mean, has he even spoken up about how hostile some of his supporters are?
Women take it all in. ;)

58. My best friend used to be a rabid Obama partisan
A few weeks ago, we were out having drinks, and he asked me why some of his white co-workers who were decent Democrats were so racist as to be against Obama. I asked him if he was fucking kidding me, but no, he was serious.

Then I asked him if there was any other demographic these co-workers had in common, and he said they were all women. I says, "There you go." Genuinely baffled, he's like, "Is it really that simple?" I go, "Yep. You've been over-thinking things again."

Now, I know anecdotes don't mean shit, but I wonder how many white female loyal Democrats have been unfairly accused of being racists, and resent Obama Nation due to that. Could be this poll reflects that.

46. This is the damage Hillary is doing to our party. She is dividing and destroying us.
She is doing more damage than the swiftboaters and the who GOP did to Kerry.

I'm sick about it.

Saying MI and FL should be seated as is is a so wrong any sane person sees it. The only ones who don't are the ones who want to destroy the democratic party.

if we win in November or not. Her latest tactics regarding Michigan and Florida are just repulsive. She doesn't exhibit one bit of concern for November. If she truly cares, then we have been giving the Clinton's far too much credit for their political savvy. The campaign has been divisive and destructive since March. The supers need to declare and end the primary.

57. A man walks into a drugstore and asks the pharmacist for a pack of condoms.
Paying for them, he bursts into laughter and walks out of the store. The next day he comes in again, again buys condoms, and again walks out laughing. Thinking this is somewhat strange, the pharmacist asks his assistant to follow the man if he comes back. Sure enough, the man comes in the next day and walks out laughing. This time the assistant goes after him, returning 20 minutes later.

"So did you follow him?" asks the pharmacist.

"Yup."

"Where did he go?"

"Your house."

131. Good Catch! Think of it as media financed DRUDGE. see below

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703290002
Drudge links to Politico 45 times during its two-month existence

As Media Matters for America has noted, Politico chief political correspondent Mike Allen's March 27 article, "Rookie Mistakes Plague Obama," was apparently flagged by Matt Drudge's website, The Drudge Report, approximately one hour before The Politico posted the article on its website on the evening of March 26. John Harris, Politico editor-in-chief, has written about the media's interest in having their work linked to on the Drudge Report. Several commentators, including blogger Glenn Greenwald, have noted an apparent tendency of Drudge to link to Politico items. Media Matters has reviewed the Drudge Report Archives and found that since The Politico launched on January 23, Drudge has linked to Politico items on at least 45 separate occasions.

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703270006

Drudge flagged Obama hit piece on Politico -- which presented admittedly "trivial" inconsistencies -- apparently one hour before it was posted
Nonetheless, Allen stretched these alleged "trivial" inconsistencies into a 1,200-word article headlined, "Rookie Mistakes Plague Obama," which appeared on the front page of the print edition. The Drudge Report flagged the article by posting its headline verbatim approximately one hour before The Politico posted the article on its website on the evening of March 26, according to Google News.

OK, if we're parsing, I must admit, "hot." I can't help it, this age is the female sexual peak, and he's cute. (That's not WHY I voted for him, duh.)

Interestingly, my 34-year-old all-white male SO found the sexism in the media so upsetting he voted for Hillary in the (Illinois) primary. (I found it upsetting too, but not enough to vote for someone who voted for the IWR if I had a choice to do otherwise)

Both of us would vote for a dead possum with a (D) after its name in the GE. Fortunately for us, looks like we're getting a brilliant, compassionate, and charismatic human candidate instead.

They have both gone canvassing with me (my mom went on PA election day despite having a broken foot) and they both cry every time they hear him speak. I love Obama too, btw, and I'm a white woman. But I'm in my 20's so I guess I fall into the demographic of young people who doesn't understand anything about politics and thinks the election is like American Idol. Funny thing is, I know more about politics than probably 95% of Americans, and I actually don't know how American Idol works.

They see themselves in her and are taking this very hard. I don't think they dislike Obama because of his race. More that they like Hillary a lot and identify closely with her.

Those who are fair-minded I suspect understand that Obama has been courteous to Clinton above and beyond the call for politics, precisely because of her gender. And that he's not sexist.

100. Why is is soooo difficult for Obama supporters to realize that plenty
of us have valid reasons to dislike Obama that have nothing to do with his race or even with Hillary???

I think that Obama is an opportunist who from the minute he got into the state senate, by managing to have his opponent's petitions thrown out, has behaved like a typical Chicago politician. I further think that he's all smoke an mirrors and has managed to make people believe his mantra of "hope", "change" and "unity". Themes that I don't think he truly believes in. He's smart, I'll give him that, but I don't think that he's ready to be president.

104. I understand there will be some who dislike him.
Of course.

What interests me is (1) that this particular sub-group departs so markedly from every other as far as unfavorables. And (2) that this movement is so recent. There has been a noticeable shift since April.

The generic factors you list in your post don't really explain (1) and (2).

I think my explanation, on the other hand, helps explain (1) and (2), in that the more Hillary is beat up on, the worse he does among this particular sub-group who identifies closely with her.

You will be assimilited.......

They can't seem to get it in their heads that plenty of people wouldn't vote for this guy even if he were white and Hillary had never been in the picture.

He's an inexperienced rookie who's main claim to fame is his convention speech in 2004, his two books (not entirely biographies since some of the characters who he tried to pass as having been real people turned out to be composites). He's charismatic, a good speaker and has learned to work the system by not making many waves in either senate (his black caucus friends in the state senate would joke that if a difficult vote came up, Barack would be in the bathroom) and by kissing up to the powerful: Emil Jones, Kennedy, Kerry and even the Clintons. Hillary campaigned for him, fundraised for him and, by his own admission, he modeled his first year in the senate after hers.

Does any of this make Obama ready and deserving of the presidency? Not by a long shot.

Hmmm. I'm not asking why some people don't like Obama. I'm asking why opinion has shifted among this particular subgroup so substantially, so recently, when it hasn't among other sub-groups.

Your generic list of reasons why you don't like Obama doesn't explain that. I don't understand why that point is so difficult for you two to grasp.

143. A good portion of women have become quite angry at the way Hillary has been treated.
Edited on Fri May-30-08 01:13 PM by Beacool
- The media bashing and sexism. Comments about her laughter (cackle), voice (shrill), weight, clothing, hair, age and even last summer her cleavage made news. It reached such a point that some of my female Republican coworkers were angry about the media's behavior toward Hillary.

MSNBC in particular has been disgusting. Tweety's remarks about why she is a senator (because Bill "messed around"). Shuster's pimping comments, KO's over the top diatribes, etc. I know many Clinton supporters, myself included, who no longer watch MSNBC.

- The constant meme of trying to make the Clintons into something that they have never been: racists.

- The attitude of utter disdain demonstrated by party leaders such as Kennedy, Pelosi and others. The more they tried to diminish the Clintons, the more they angered their supporters.

For this and much more, I will repeat what I have said consistently: I will only vote for Obama if Hillary is also on the ticket, and only out of respect for her.

It's close to the same number favorable and unfavorable. The point, which is bad, however, is that because of Hilly's terrible actions the past few months, Obama's favorables among white women have suffered.

This is evidence that Hilly is tearing the party apart.

His favorable rating among white women is 43%, which is down from the last Pew Research poll. In April he was winning wf against McCain 49-46. He now loses them 41-49. I suspect it's mostly elderly white democratic females where the slide has taken place.

This probably the 15th time I have plugged this book this election season. Because Obama is not sexist and Clinton is not racist. Period.

130. I see the feminists coalescing around hillary
What i don't understand is how the role of civil rights has been thrust upon clinton. was it self induced or genuine? I can't recall anytime clinton advocated for my vote (Floridian) until Jan 25 when it became evident that she miscalculated the effect of the early primaries. I would be comfortable with her argument about my voting rights had she spoken before the RBC convened in december and stripped all of the delegates from florida. I would be proudly protesting in DC on saturday if that were the case. but on the day i voted I knew this would only be a beauty contest. I also voted that day because of the property tax and slot machine issues on the local ballot. At this point, I feel exploited by Clinton and her Machiavellian ploys. Her campaign has acted treacherously. from the "I think he is not.... as far as he says....", comment to , her william ayers comment in the debate, The wright comment, the RFK comment, McCain and Obama speech comment. it goes on and on. The fact that she says white voters like her better(paraphrase) It shows her lack of self-control and discipline. So the polls say Obama is having a rough time, Good. He will work to earn their vote. that is the challenge in between now and November.

If Hillary continues to divide the party, well good luck when her senate term comes up. The reality must sink in that she will not be the nominee. It is not because of the media, she is white,or she is a women. She failed because she failed to run an effective campaign.

148. And they will hand President McCain the opportunity to dump Roe v Wade.
If they had McCain the opportunity to appoint two or three more SCOTUS nominaations, young neo-con activist judges that wil be around for 25 or 30 years, a hell of a lot more than just Roe v. Wade will go.

133. Goddamn, Why Politico?
It's like it is the new :Library of Congress" or something. WTF? There was a recent post here about Politico, and people here didn't seem to like it very much. I'd give more credence to your OP if it were a different source, even if I don't exactly like the thread title. I'm not saying it's complete BS, I'm asking if there is a better source than Politico.

135. It's just a Politico article about a Pew Research poll
Here is the actual poll/research report: http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?ReportID=425

I don't understand the hand-wringing over the source. The article simply reports the poll results.

141. What a misleading headline - glass half empty/full kind of nonsense
Half don't like Obama? That means half do.

Of those who don't, the ones who recently swung away will swing back after Clinton is out of the race. They are confusing the media attacks against Clinton with the Obama campaign, which I don't believe has run a sexist campaign any more than I believe Clinton has run a racist one.
