1. if it's after the convention and before the election his VP pick gets the top spot, is my guess.
(My money would be on Romney.)

The VP takes the top of the ticket if its before the convention.

During the convention they pick a candidate

24. Seriously, that is the rumor down here in FL. McCain will drop out at
an appointed time and will be replaced by Jeb. Red this in an op-ed in the www.pbpost.com. McCain is more or less the set up (they know he'll lose) and Jeb will be slid in there. RUMOR NOW, remember...

(a) The Republican National Committee is hereby authorized and empowered to fill any and all vacancies which may occur by reason of death, declination, or otherwise of the Republican candidate for President of the United States or the Republican candidate for Vice President of the United States, as nominated by the national convention, or the Republican National Committee may reconvene the national convention for the purpose of filling any such vacancies.

(b) In voting under this rule, the Republican National Committee members representing any state shall be entitled to cast the same number of votes as said state was entitled to cast at the national convention.

A few of us made quite a study of RNC rules in '04 when they were here in NYC, to look for ways to make mischief. :hi:

18. Constitutionally, it depends
First one candidate must win a majority of the electoral college.

If Obama wins, the point is moot.

If McCain wins, his Veep candidate takes it:

Amendment XX

Section 3. If, at the time fixed for the beginning of the term of the President, the President elect shall have died, the Vice President elect shall become President. If a President shall not have been chosen before the time fixed for the beginning of his term, or if the President elect shall have failed to qualify, then the Vice President elect shall act as President until a President shall have qualified; and the Congress may by law provide for the case wherein neither a President elect nor a Vice President elect shall have qualified, declaring who shall then act as President, or the manner in which one who is to act shall be selected, and such person shall act accordingly until a President or Vice President shall have qualified.

20. Bush can then constitutionally run for a third term ...
.... I know, thank god it's not actually true.

That depends on whether he's chosen a VP. They would have a brokered convention, and pick a candidate. Probably Romney, or whoever McCain had chosen for VP. If the latter was Bobby Jindal, he would be a much stronger candidate in a GE than McCain, so that's not what we want.

Ronald Reagan proved that America is ready to accept a zombie President.

22. The campaign continues
without interruption. The candidate is freeze-dried even further than the extent we are familiar with, and the same version of claymation that was used with "the Gipper" allows him to campaign on television for all to see.

25. This is in bad taste HawkeyeX
I love reading your post but this one is in bad taste. This would be no different than someone asking what would happen if Obama was assassinated. There is a real chance that McCain could die a natural death because of his age and his anger issues. There is a real chance Obama could be shot at because of the color of his skin. Let us not go there.
