No matter what happens tonight, DU will never be the same. The hate and bile
may be quieted but it will never regain the high ground. It like a smashed pumpkin, you can bake it into a pie but it will never regain its true form.

It's very sad and a shame.

8. I was.
And comparing 2004 to this primary season is like comparing a trip through Disney land to a ride through Hell.

I lurk occasionally just to see what Obama supporters are saying, because they took over this site months ago.

I'm no longer a "DU'er". I will never donate again. This primary has destroyed any credibility this site once had.

primaries began. You act like roving bands of Obama supporters got together one day and decided to rip DU away from it's membership like some kind of invading army.

I've been a DUer for years, long before Barack Obama decided to run for president, and long before I decided to support Obama. Just because the majority opinion of a group to which you belong doesn't jibe with your minority opinion doesn't mean the group has been "taken over". You're welcome to have a different opinion, but you can't act surprised when folks disagree.

If people want to whine and mourn something that is still here, fine. but it will be what you make it. self-fulfilling prophecy.

Sorry, I got carried away, but I remember on November 11, 2004, trying to sign in to DU and the circuits were SO overloaded, only people who were registered to check in, and it stayed like that for I guess about a week. And apparently, while not the entire effing board joined in, a SUBSTANTIAL minority portion DID pile on, saying that John Kerry's refusal to throw gays under the bus helped contribute to his defeat.

13. 2004 was pretty bad, and we came back from it.
It was not like this, but only because it didn't go on as long.

I went back and looked at some of my old DU posts from the 2004 primary. Turns out I had forgotten all about the Dean vs. Clark battle here. Oh my God that was a pain in the ass. DU picked up a slew of new usernames with Dean and Clark in them and they just went at it. Since I had no brief for either of them I was mainly annoyed, but I did worry about the effect it was having on DU. Turns out there was none. I doubt anyone even remembers that fight now. The legion of Kerry-haters (remember DU is more left than the party as a whole; he was not most people's first choice) eventually came around and supported him.

This will pass *once we have a nominee.* The only way that neither DU nor the party comes back from this is if we *never* have a nominee. Which right now seems like a possibility, but that's only cause we're all exhausted and partially insane.

cheer up,

The Plaid Adder

I'll go out on a limb and name a couple of names here. TahitiNut and CatWoman. Ardent Obama supporters. But you know what? We respected each other BEFORE the primaries, and I'll still respect them long after this election is over (and I hope they'll extend me the same honor!). Even though we disagreed, they never found it necessary to get nasty with me, nor I with them. I don't think we'll have any trouble putting aside our disagreement over the primaries.

There are some others, though, who shall remain nameless ... well, you can guess the rest.

75. I'm not a crybaby, I'm just saying I won't forget it.
I suspect there a more than a few others who feel that way. And that affects the vibrancy of discussion on what is supposed to be a DISCUSSION BOARD. We're all the worse off for it.

88. "like what someone is saying about a candidate is saying it about us"
In that sense when our last two choices were a woman or a person of color, it's a worst-case scenario.

Many people chose their candidate primarily on the fact that they're most like them.

This primary season has been uglier than I remember seeing it, but it will always change. People leave in disgust or get tombstoned, new members join, and the resulting adjustments create a kaleidoscope effect

I think it's a good thing that views, and attitudes have been exposed. How can you possibly eradicate a disease if you don't know you're sick?

That's certainly what it sounds like to me.

I love it when "progressives" or "liberals" get into ideological purity matches, with each side wanting to eradicate those who aren't quite as pure as THEY are.

73. Not at all...
the 'disease' I speak of is not posters, or human beings, it is attitudes and that which prevent us from becoming a force as 'we the people'. I have learned a lot about myself in this primary season, and I expect others have examined their own beliefs as well. I think it is very "progressive" to acknowledge our differences, and those divisions.

63. Message boards reflect the mood of those posting there....
I have no problem with the DU GDP forum because it accurately reflects the mood of those posting here. I would rather have an honest portrayal of the emotions and beliefs of posters of a forum than some sanitized play-nice version.

If Hillary and Bill can stop their hate/divisive/bigot-pandering/insulting OBama's supporters and African-Americans, then the active resentment will die down and the board will move on to a more positive coverage of the campaign.

But you cannot blame DU or its posters for reacting in anger to a campaign the Clinton have turned in to the worst Bush/Rove campaign possible.

There are some people like me who will never forgive the Clintons for what they have done, and any time the Clintons become part of the discussion, I will probably be quite honest about my feelings about them.

But that's just how message boards go. They reflect the sentiments of the posters, and anything else would be false and dishonest.

Wah, some of Obama's supporters have been sexist! Yeah, ok, this one's actually a fair point.

here about everything that Hillary does, or not.

It is clear that Obama will be the nominee and he certainly has offered a hand in peace but his supporters here, on DU, continue to express their hatred.

All I can hope is that most of they are young kids who don't know any better.

The adults among us, know that when it is over, it is time to reconcile and, yes, it is the gracious winner who often would offer the peace offering.

After all, we did build Germany and Japan after WWII
