*** Who Else Finds It Strange and Suspicious, The AP Would Report 2
Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 02:40 PM by indimuse
WRONG (made up!!!) stories....TODAY? Both...benefiting BO!
Hum... let's see... Hillary WILL Concede Tonight = NO Need TO VOTE.. TODAY!

Let's see Obama clinches nom.. (Bush won FL) OOOPPSS!

I'm having 'Flashbacks" from 2000...anyone else? But, One question... Is The AP in competition with Fox now?

UPDATE!! LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!!

Let's talk about the AP's premature Clinton obituary (Updated)

Early this morning, when RezkoWatch posted the HotList, at the top of the page was the following:

Advance Warning: Today, voters in South Dakota and Montana take their turns at the polls. Based on previous experience, commenter Cooney predicted the following last night at No Quarter:

"The Obamab peeps are in a frenzy, they are about to have a grand mal seizure, hence all the rumors. They are looking at the polls too. How will it look if he loses both. He needs a deflection quick. Get out of the way—the rumor kitchen sink is flying. They have to steal all the headlines to distract the media away from tomorrow."

Well, true to form, on June 3, 2008, at approximately 12:30 PM Eastern Time, the Associated Press perpetrated the crime on its own website. Straight from the desk of Beth Fouhy comes the following:

Hillary Rodham Clinton will concede Tuesday night that Barack Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, campaign officials said, effectively ending her bid to be the nation's first female president.

Obama is 40 delegates shy of clinching the nomination, but he is widely expected to make up the difference Tuesday with superdelegate support and votes in South Dakota and Montana. Once he reaches the magic number of 2,118, Clinton will acknowledge that he has secured the necessary delegates to be the nominee.

The former first lady will stop short of formally suspending or ending her race in her speech in New York City.

She will pledge to continue to speak out on issues like health care. But for all intents and purposes, the two senior officials said, the campaign is over.

Then, straight from the desk of Carolyn Lochhead at the San Francisco Chronicle comes the truth:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/b/a/2008/06/03/nov05election-clinton_says_wi.DTL

The Clinton campaign just put out this announcement: "The AP story is incorrect.

Senator Clinton will not concede the nomination this evening."

All of those strategically placed yet somehow spontaneous copies of her books that magically show up on "admirers" at impromptu photo-ops in South Dakota really drove sales a long way.

It will be a very terse and disgusted speech, almost forced. She won't suspend or concede, just stop campaigning and hope the bonfire that she has built in the middle of her supporters keeps burning long enough to hurt Obama.

How dare Obama take on the Clinton dynasty and the DLC establishment?:sarcasm:

9. Too bad it was HER advisors who informed the AP - - FAIL!
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/2008/06/clinton_may_concede_delegate_r.php

snip//

Most campaign staff will be let go and will be paid through June 15, said the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to divulge her plans.

The advisers said Clinton has made a strategic decision to not formally end her campaign, giving her leverage to negotiate with Obama on various matters including a possible vice presidential nomination for her. She also wants to press him on issues he should focus on in the fall, such as health care.

23. If you are having "flashbacks" it might explain why you are so out of touch with reality
But, seriously, to answer your questions, not that you want them answered, no, there is nothing suspect about AP running the two stories to which you refer.

The first story, which claimed that HRC would concede tonight was based on information from Terry McAuliffe, a Clinton insider. So if its wrong, its because the Clinton camp disseminated the wrong information.

The second story -- which from all appearances you haven't actually read -- isn't wrong. It expressly states that Obama has "effectively" won the nomination based on AP's tabulation of the delegates, which includes information from 16 SDs who have not publicly committed but who confirmed their support for Obama to AP and also includes as assumption about the number of delegates that Obama will get from SD. In other words, the story fully discloses the conjectural nature of its determination that obama has "effectively" captured the nomination.

MSNBC did not report that Obama won Montana. MSNBC's website put up, temporarily, a dummy page that stated Obama won and then took it down. Such inadvertent displays of dummy pages has occurred before and will occur in the future.

27. I think I know what may have happened...AP has made some real boner publications before.---
Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 02:15 PM by PoliticalAmazon
I remember one vividly.

This was after one of Cheney's heart procedures. The day before he was scheduled to return to work, at around 11:00 p.m., they published an article that sounded like it had been written at 10:00 a.m. or so the NEXT DAY. It described Cheney having returned to work, moving well, meeting briefly with staff at 7:30 a.m. then going on to another meeting at 9:00 a.m., etc.

I forwarded it to a political author cohort who I figured would know what was going on. He was surprised too but, on checking with a reporter contact of his, the reporter laughed his ass off at the AP bonehead mistake. The reporter said that there were probably a couple of articles pre-written to be published depending on what had happened.

This current instance may or may not be similar to the Cheney AP mistake in publishing the wrong prewritten article or publishig it ahead of time.

44. then maybe you should take it up with Terry McAuliffe
who was the source for the "conceding tonight" story.

As for the second story, it doesn't benefit HRC, but its also not untrue. AP merely stated that, on the basis of information it collected and its assumption about the results in tongight's primaries, Obama will "effectively" have captured the nomination. Please explain how the AP story is untrue?

some campaign official told an AP reporter that when Obama gets the number, Clinton will concede and the party will come together(Harold Ikies*, probably, from what it looked like this morning, or someone else who has had a reporter in his/her face for days). He/she probably meant to say something like "when either of them gets the number" which is what they've been saying.

Meanwhile, enough superdelegates have told AP that they will endorse after the polls close or when x number of others do, that the AP concludes he has the number.

So, "Clinton will concede when Obama has the number" and "Obama has the number" became "Clinton will concede" because that's the bigger headline.

The press is made up of a bunch of individual reporters who often are overworked, underpaid and have their own agendas. Campaign staff is made up of a bunch of individuals who are also overworked, underpaid and have their own agendas. I believe that big media conspiracies can happen, but it is easier for me to believe in a combination of incompetence and honest mistakes.

*Mcauliffe, actually

51. In terms of the Clinton conceding story causing people to decide
that there's no need to vote, wouldn't that just lower turnout for both candidates? I mean, if they've already determined who is getting the nomination, there wouldn't be a need for Obama supporters to turn out either. I don't see how such a story would *only* hurt Clinton.

Update: Jon Ausman, whose Florida challenge to the seating of delegates was heard on Saturday, announces is 1/2 superdelegate vote will go to Hillary. Why? He wants a joint ticket and she is the key to winning Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Shorter version (mine): Obama can't win those states without her, and the Dems won't win the presidency without them.

CNN is reporting Hillary has told New York lawmakers that she is open to the VP slot.

Now here's the funny part: Suzanne Malveaux reports that the Obama campaign says she is on the "short list" but is concerned that the Clintons haven't been fully vetted.

Donna Brazile's new tune today: We don't yet have a nominee.

Poll below: Should there be a unity ticket?

67. What then must you think of Terry Macauliffe...
...a source of these "rumors"?

She's not going to concede, she's going to suspend. Seems that some in her own camp were a little confused with the details.
