so don't expect a quick announcement on Obama's VP choice. It'll probably be at the most a month, IMO, before we know who's on the ticket.

5. That's about standard
Late July-early August.

Enough time for everyone to get the primary season out of their systems.

6. The nominee needs to get himself known better to Dem party voters before he introduces a
running mate. Kerry got screwed over by the release of Bill Clinton's biography, and all Dem attention was forced into once again defending Bill, his presidency and his retelling of the story, even as Bill was using his 3 week book tour to show support for and defend mightily Bush's decisions on Iraq war.

Dems knew little of their nominee and didn't have that crucial timeframe to know enough about his record and his remarkable life to defend him from the attack machine. Clinton took up all the oxygen for a month. Then Reagan died. Then we had only 3 primetime hours on the networks for the convention. And then McGreevey got caught.

8. And McGovern didn't pick Shriver until well after the convention.
But maybe that one shouldn't be the precedent. ;-)

(I was a McGovern delegate to my state convention that year and canvassed for him in the GE.)
