I'm sure this list is short many names, but these are the female and African-American (and sometimes female African-American) candidates whom we should also be tipping our hats to tonight. As we celebrate Senator Obama's success, let's not forget these people, who have taken their own "road less traveled" and helped change this country.

17. Your post inspired me
to revisit Barbara Jordan, who was one of the most knowledgable and eloquent patriots this nation has ever produced. Listen again (and you really should LISTEN, just to hear her resounding voice) to her speech before the House Judiciary Committee discussing the impending impeachment of Nixon. Would that we had legislators today who possessed her courage. Would that Nancy Pelosi had read that speech.....

There have been many brave women who have blazed paths through unknown woods, just as there have been many blacks, hispanics and asians and caucasians.

Far too often we fail to remember just how lopsided our nation was/(is) when it comes to basic human rights.

Not everyone is an Eleanor Roosevelt or a Harriet Tubman or a Stephen Douglass or anyone you mentioned above, but they blazed trails that others would follow. The brave, who suffered indignites and disenfranchisement, never gave up...they pressed forward the dream until it became a reality.

We owe a huge debt of gratitutde to those who had the courage to go forth upon their convictions.

41. Beautiful... and sad
I knew some of them, but I had no idea that so many women had run for President. Of course, that's likely because NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM was taken seriously until Hillary Clinton ran.

I'm sad because I suspect the next woman to run will be treated more like the others than like Hillary.
