The Republicans woke up today and it finally hit them: John McCain is actually their nominee.
This is not a dream.
This is not a dril.
This is reality.
"Maverick" John McCain "McCain-Feingold" John McCain "McCain-Kennedy" John McCain "Gang of 14" John McCain "Agents of Intolerance" John McCain
This is a John McCain who is despised by the religious right, hated by the libertarians, and only tolerated by the green-eyeshade crowd.
This is the McCain who is 71 but looks 81 sometimes.
The McCain whose voice sends Republicans scurrying for the exits.
The McCain who has been relentlessly attacked by Rush Limbaugh since 1999. The McCain who Sean Hannity calls "too liberal." The McCain that made Ann Coulter "endorse" Hillary Clinton.
Do you think we have problems? The only problem we have had is that we have not had the chance to go after the most vulnerable Republican candidate since Goldwater.
McCain is the nominee for three reasons:
1. Veterans. 2. Name recognition. 2. An absolutely horrible crop of opponents.
None of these are going to help him in November.
So, throw away your old "red/blue" maps. Throw away your Bush-Gore/Bush-Kerry breakdowns.
No one has any idea how the Republicans are going to behave in November or what their turnout will be. No one knows how many will run to Bob Barr or Alan Keyes or whatever freak-show third party candidates show up. No one knows how they will "protest" this man they hate.
And it is not Obama that they hate. They barely know him.
The man most hated by Republicans in this election is their own nominee.
These are the good days.
