Has Hillary committed political suicide?
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 04:08 PM by Cyrano
Last night was a landmark moment in American history. A black man won the nomination for president of the United States.

It was a moment that was acknowledged this morning on the front pages of newspapers throughout the entire civilized world. And we and future generations will always look back upon it as one of the greatest and finest moments in American history.

But for some inscrutable reason, Hillary felt the need to step on this historic event. Not only didn’t she concede, but Terry MacAuliff, her campaign manager, introduced her before her speech as “The next president of the United States.”

I don’t think that we’ll hear the Democratic Party leadership publicly condemn her for not conceding and calling for party unity. But make no mistake about it. When she returns to the senate, she’ll find she has built a mountain of resentment toward herself for the unimaginable act of disrespect that she committed last night. Not to mention the condemnation of history for having not recognized that she was trampling on such an incredible moment.

Last night, Hillary all but threatened to withhold “her voters” unless she got what she wants. And what does she want? The answer is so simple as to be astonishing. She wants to be president. Screw the rules. Screw being ahead in score at the end of the ninth inning. Screw inconvenient math. Screw getting a Dem into the White House. To Hillary, it’s “screw everything unless it’s ME.”

Hillary, you’ve missed you’re opportunity to bow out with grace and dignity. Now, will you please just bow out and go away?

Would you all please stop this juvenile crap? We're not talking about the way someone looks in a picture. We're talking about the future of our country.

Nobody can tell you not to concentrate on trivia rather than substance. Nobody can tell you what to post or not to post. At least have the decency to admit to yourself that this immature crap has nothing whatever to do with who becomes the next president of the United States.

And, just possibly, by putting this trivia on this thread, you too are disrespecting the incredibly historic event that took place last night with the first black man becoming a viable candidate to be the president of the United States. It's a solemn and magnificent moment.

2. Only if she does not concede before midnight tomorrow
After that, she's irrelevent politically.

If she concedes on Friday, she's finished politically. Any day after that is fine, but irrelevent.

13. I don't see where it made
Senator Kennedy irrelevant when he took his fight with Carter to the convention. In fact, he's done some of his best work in the Senate since then and is considered a giant amongst Democrats (rightly so). What makes Sen Clinton so different?

20. The Democratic Party has learned
Taking it to the convention is a certain loser.

It was not obvious in 1980.

In fact, 1980 is probably the biggest reason Hillary Clinton will be irrelevent if she does not concede. She knows better now than Ted knew then.

25. She wont take it to the convention
I'm 90% sure of that. I think this thing is over by the end of the week. She's done what she's said she'd do - wait for all the votes. I think the biggest sign was Rahm Emmanuel endorsing Sen Obama today. My biggest question is where is Al Gore? He needs to endorse Sen Obama - and fast.

29. She CANNOT concede on Friday
so it's either tomorrow of Monday.

Friday is June 6, 2008 and if she concedes on that day it would be the biggest slap in the face to America possible given her insensitivity not long ago.

40. Based on Hillary's actions during the campaign, what makes you think she won't?...
People keep giving her more credit for ethics and honor than she deserves, and have been continually disappointed when she proves to them that she has no honor or ethics.

She obviously is clueless about destroying the legacies of herself, Bill and Chelsea, or doesn't care.

So I don't see what indication we have that she will, all of a sudden, find Jesus and act like an honorable Democrat interested in the future of the Party.

Hillary Clinton has not. All that deference people seem to believe Hillary is entitled to? Multiply that exponentially, and that's the kind of deference Kennedy gets. He was trying to get something back that had been lost. It didn't happen. What we got was Reagan. We learn.

Who looked and acted Presidential last night? It certainly wasn't Sen. Clinton. Her act was disrespectful and immature. Hopefully, many of her supporters saw it as such.

In fact, listening to the local talk radio show in Pgh, several Hillary supporters called and said they were stunned and embarassed by her actions.

I believe she has done herself no favors by acting like a suborn child. If, in the next few days Hillary comes out for Barack in a large venue with Barack by her side in a show of unity, she'll probably be forgiven by some. Never by others. If not, she's definitely finished.

If she doesn't come out and acknowlegde Obama's win and endorse him within the week, I think she will be "dead" to much of the party, and she can kiss even her Senate career away. She is not being a team player right now, and the Dem Machine will not take that kindly.

35. Reply to posts #16 & #17.
As Cher said in "Moonstruck," "Snap out of it."

The only issue that really counts right now is that we don't allow another Republican into the White House unless or until their party decides to acquire some basic human decency.

Defending Hillary and her campaign is no longer the point. We need to get Obama into the White House and keep McCain from even getting close to it.

My post was about decency. Last night, Hillary showed none. Any decent person who really cares about our country and democracy would stop, think, and vote accordingly.

Do you really care more about Hillary's ambitions and future than you do about our country? Please, please, please, "Snap out of it."

38. Don't underestimate the Clintons
Hillary is a smart politician and she knows what she has to do. I am betting that Hillary is setting herself up for a leadership position in the Democratic party.

Judging by Hillary's speeches last night and today, she has conceded to Obama all but formally. She has praised Obama and stressed the need for a Democrat to win the election.

Losing in the election can be emotionally draining, and her dream of being the first female president was crushed. I think she is going to do some soul searching in the coming days to help find her place in the party. She could be setting herself to be a leader in the senate or try to go for the VP spot.

One thing you can count Hillary on is being politically savy, and she has set up the image of being someone who fights to the end for the little guy. I am willing to bet she will still have a successful political career.
