Dear Hillary Supporters
Dear Hillary supporters,

I'm sure some of you are feeling pretty lousy right now, I'm sorry for that. Likewise, I'm sure the majority of you will be voting for Obama in November. If you have to hold your nose to do it, fair enough. This has been a long and bruising primary but it's over now, Obama is the nominee and Hillary will apparently be dropping out either Friday or Saturday which is why I removed my thread calling on her to concede.

I know that some of you are still pretty pissed at us Obama supporters for various reasons, some legitimate, some not. Some of us are still pissed at you for various reasons, some legitimate, some not. We need to put all that to one side because the election coming up in November is bigger than either of us. This isn't about your feelings or mine or even about Senator's Clinton and Obama really, it's about stopping McCain, stopping the neo-con agenda and stopping Bush's third term. This is more important than us, more important than who said what to whom or why.

So, here's a deal. If we can admit that we both said some pretty nasty things over the last couple months, agree to put it aside and move on, we can beat the Walking Yawn, restore some actual government and, hopefully, improve things a bit. As a gesture of good will, I'll go first: For anything I have said which was unpleasent or hurtful, I apologise. I'm sorry. Will you join with me, with us, in trying to improve things now?

Yours,
Prophet

1. I'm disappointed...
I saw that Hillary wasn't going to get it a couple of weeks ago. Got on the Obama bandwagon. Wasn't difficult for me at all since I like him a lot and think he'd make a very good president.

Even though I knew it was coming, I still feel disappointed. Not sure why.

19. I think someone would have been disappointed whoever won
We had two history making candidates here and only one of them could win. Obviously, that means that one of them doesn't win and for the group that feels represented by them, that's bound to be disappointing.

9. So it was too soon for her to concede while primaries were ongoing
But when someone tries to make ammends as soon as they're over, it's too late. And you refuse to put your own feelings aside for the greater good.

Glad we got that straight.

3. Feeling Pretty Lousy?
For supporting a great woman and a great candidate?

Hardly.

5. For not winning
Hillary didn't win, no-one enjoys that, it's human nature and I'd be surprised if her supporters weren't somewhat dejected about that right now. I didn't mean for supporting Hillary.

If you'd like to celebrate those votes, that's probably healthier than being downcast anyway. Good for you!

12. In all seriousness, I mourned when she was being attacked.
This is not a time for mourning or disillusionment.

I like HRC. I like Obama.

This season is history-making.

The first act of Obama's Secretary of the Interior is going to be putting Republicans on the Endangered Species List.

4. I would like to tap into your thread
And remind people that the presidential election is much more then the white house. SCOTUS. Need I say more?

Prophet, in response to your post- in an impassioned primary we all behave... well... passionately. Hopefully the cooling down period will be quick and painless.

8. The problem is
there were a number of respectful Obama supporters and a number of respectful Hillary supporters. They may have gotten passionate at times about their candidate, maybe overly passionate, but they didn't routinely engage in vitriol and character assassination.

Why should those people have to forgive the ones who behaved like assholes? Why should they even bother?

Really, it's that simple. For the greater good; because, and sorry to go SF geek on you, the needs of teh many outweigh the needs of teh few.

13. but it's rewarding bad behaviour
most of the rational adults on this site will vote for Obama. Regardless of who they supported in the primaries. They don't need to forgive the people who behaved like snarling toddlers for six months.

17. Point
I understand what you're saying. I just, we need to beat McCain in the worst way and, even if it does mean rewarding bad behaviour, we're going to need everyone along to do that.

11. As I posted in another thread - its a new world in the Dem party
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 10:27 PM by OzarkDem
Regardless of who our candidate is, we've seen the beginning of a sea change in Dem politics. Dem women have, for better or worse, had their consciousness raised as a result of this primary.

After working many, many years raising money, organizign campaigns, doing grassroots politics and helping get Dems elected at every level of the party, we've had a rude awakening from the leaders of our party.

We've finally realized we are regarded by many in leadership and at the grassroots level that we're second class citizens in the party.

We've been exposed to sexism and political double standards that we never realized were so pervasive.

We've been attacked as ferociously by our own fellow Dems as we have by Republicans.

We're still Democrats, but our eyes are open now. As a group that represents over half the voters in this party, we won't soon forget the blistering, withering backlash and betrayal we experienced for supporting the first woman candidate for president.

We won't forget the double standards that were applied between a female and a male candidate in our primary race. It is seared into our consciousness, into our memory.

Unity or not, the Democratic Party will not be the same and, while battles will continue, they will save the party and make it stronger for the future. We can't live in the 19th century, we must have equality for all Dem women who run for office or seek to lead at all levels of the party.

Good luck, it won't be easy, but it will be productive. And our country, our society, our culture and our party will be better for having made this journey that we are just beginning.

The Democratic Party will no longer be able to take its women voters for granted.

20. Your mind is confused!
"We've finally realized we are regarded by many in leadership and at the grassroots level that we're second class citizens in the party.

We've been exposed to sexism and political double standards that we never realized were so pervasive.

We've been attacked as ferociously by our own fellow Dems as we have by Republicans."

So if Obama picks a woman for VP, then everything is OK -- or does it have to be Hillary?
Or is that not good enough either -- the Dem candidate HAS to be a woman.
So this is ALL about gender for you?

I have zero compassion with this mindset. Women have just as much a chance to get any position in this country as a man!
If you want to be a cry baby when you are not chosen, then you were not the right candidate to begin with.
The hypocrisy is astounding with some female gender-fanatics. A giant slap of reality might do you good.
How many women are current holding high-level polictal position in the US governemt right now!
How many women CEOs are there? Don't say it can't be done.

I am sooo tired of this sexist racism. I always vote for the person who I think is the best candidate, and gender is NEVER a factor in my decision.

If you can't stand the heat... get out of the kitchen!
