Here's the email Hillary sent out to supporters this morning. She is definitely endorsing Obama.
Did someone already post this? Seems like a lot of people are saying she's not really dropping out, or that she is not going to support and/or endorse Obama. Her email seems fairly explicit. I do wish I understood why she is waiting until Saturday though.

I wanted you to be one of the first to know: on Saturday, I will hold an event in Washington D.C. to thank everyone who has supported my campaign. Over the course of the last 16 months, I have been privileged and touched to witness the incredible dedication and sacrifice of so many people working for our campaign. Every minute you put into helping us win, every dollar you gave to keep up the fight meant more to me than I can ever possibly tell you.

On Saturday, I will extend my congratulations to Senator Obama and my support for his candidacy. This has been a long and hard-fought campaign, but as I have always said, my differences with Senator Obama are small compared to the differences we have with Senator McCain and the Republicans.

I have said throughout the campaign that I would strongly support Senator Obama if he were the Democratic Party's nominee, and I intend to deliver on that promise.

When I decided to run for president, I knew exactly why I was getting into this race: to work hard every day for the millions of Americans who need a voice in the White House.

I made you -- and everyone who supported me -- a promise: to stand up for our shared values and to never back down. I'm going to keep that promise today, tomorrow, and for the rest of my life.

I will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise.

I know as I continue my lifelong work for a stronger America and a better world, I will turn to you for the support, the strength, and the commitment that you have shown me in the past 16 months. And I will always keep faith with the issues and causes that are important to you.

In the past few days, you have shown that support once again with hundreds of thousands of messages to the campaign, and again, I am touched by your thoughtfulness and kindness.

I can never possibly express my gratitude, so let me say simply, thank you.

3. I don't understand why people think she wouldn't support him.
Although vilifying her seems to be the "cool" thing to do??

5. It's probably a large dose of frayed nerves after a very long primary
I've been guilty of getting jumpy too. But I think she will support him come Saturday. I wish she would have done so sooner but I'm not the boss of her. :D

6. I think it's pretty common for candidates to decompress before rallying behind someone else
I mean, Edwards didn't exactly jump to support anyone the day after he dropped out.

11. Don't get me wrong
I meant that in the friendliest of terms. I was just saying "I wish," not that "I command" or anything like that.

I think you're right too. Especially considering how long the primary has been and how close the results ultimately were. I don't blame her, but I think lots of people just want it to be over so they can relax about the primary and move 100% on to the general and Gramps McSaggy.

12. She has poor follow through. She promised to hold Bush accountable for her IWR support and
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 07:24 AM by blm
then when he would not listen to weapon inspectors who were proving force was not needed she owed the public her dissent. But she would not stand against Bush and would not back up Kerry and the few Dems who DID follow through on their promise to dissent if Bush made a decision for war that did not jive with the reports from the weapon inspectors.

And she's betrayed Dem trust many other times. So does she earn trust for Saturday? What she does on Saturday will be because she HAD TO do it after many of her top supporters chewed her out yesterday. She wasn't going to endorse Obama on her own judgment.

7. This is a concession?
She never acknowledges that Obama has won. She never says she is ending her campaign. What is up with that?

10. I guess saying:

15. It does seem to have a medium-sized loophole
Very Clintonesque, if you will.

"I have said throughout the campaign that I would strongly support Senator Obama if he were the Democratic Party's nominee, and I intend to deliver on that promise."

Obama is not technically the nominee of the party until after the convention. I don't think Hillary's e-mail totally rules out a convention fight.

29. Exactly. the wording was intentional
I don't know how many times people have to fooled by the tricky wording of these two before they figure out you have to read EVERY WORD carefully.

In the end it doesn't really make any difference what the hell she does. As Jon Stewart remarked last night, this isn't one of these deals where it takes two people with secret codes to active a nuclear missile. It doesn't matter if Hillary admits that he has won or not. The fact is he has won and she has lost. A concession at this stage means nothing. It would have meant something on Tuesday night.

Over the next 5 months, most of her supporters will get over it and be with us. And the ones who don't, we'll just have to live with that.

19. She can't formally end her campaign now
She is "suspending" her campaign so that she can continue to raise money until the convention is over when the nomination is official. If she just concedes and releases her delegates (assuming she can even do that legally), she can no longer raise primary money to pay off her debts.

24. Good point.
That's what Edwards did as well - suspend rather than end. I hope that Clinton really means what she says about supporting Obama. I hope she campaigns for him wholeheartedly and her supporters get to see a real camaraderie develop between the two former rivals as they both turn their focus on McCain's many deficiencies.

My problem, and I admit to it freely, is that I have trust issues with the Clintons. I used to love them and they abused my devotion. If Hillary had been as critical of her friend McCain during the primary campaign as she was of her fellow Democrat Obama, I would be less queasy about her promise to back our nominee.

30. She can do what EVERY OTHER candidate does when they lose
She can congratulate her opponent on his victory and move on.

She didn't do that in her email. She won't do it on Saturday. She, Bill, McCauliffe, and Ickies will still be trying to game the system next week. She will still be making stump speeches any place that will give her a podium and a camera.

Life goes on.

This isnt going to Denver, this isnt going anywhere else. Obama will be the nominee and we will have to work hard to make sure that we win in November, but this weekend we celebrate on a long and hard fought win.
