Shame on Koryne Horbal and thank you Mari Pokornowski
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 01:16 PM by Catherina
I am reposting this because in our justified disgust with Koryne Horbal, many people may miss that the very important response of the President of the DFL Feminist Caucus

Here is the initial screwball nastiness from Koryne Horbal

Feminist leader says no to Obama

...

"I don't care," Horbal said of the possibility that the move might cost Obama votes. She said she also would not be bothered if the write-in campaign indirectly helped elect John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee. "Let McCain clean it up for four years, and then we can have Hillary run again," she said.

...

She also said, however, that Clinton remains the better candidate: "This woman is ready, and Obama is not ready."

"You have to do what you have to do," she added.

Koryne Horbal, the 71-year-old founder of the DFL Feminist Caucus, doesn't care whether her idea costs Democrats the White House.

And here is the firm, clear reply from the President of the DFL Feminist Caucus

http://www.dflfc.org /

Greeting everyone,

The DFL Feminist Caucus took no part in the recent StarTribune article or other similar efforts regarding any type of protesting the Democratic candidate. It was as much of a surprise to us as it was to you.

We have never spoken about this or any other "protest" inside or outside our meetings nor has anyone addressed it with us. As president, I would have aggressively discouraged such an effort. It violates everything we believe as a DFLers.

If you have any questions... please contact us. Let people know that we are as offended and shocked as you are!! If we, the people who fight for equality, cannot find it in our own hearts to celebrate the success of our own friends...than "who are we."

The Obama Campaign has been contacted to help clarify this situation...!

Mari Pokornowski

President, Feminist Caucus

They have also sent out a press release lest it be assumed that first nutjob was speaking in any official capacity

Press Release:

Statement of DFL Feminist Caucus President Mari Pokornowski

"I want to make it absolutely clear that assertions that the DFL Feminist Caucus is encouraging a "protest" write-in effort for Hillary Clinton in the general election for President of the United States, are absolutely false.

In addition, please be advised that neither me, or any official of the Caucus, had any involvement in promoting the Star Tribune article quoting a well known Minnesota feminist saying she personally would write-in Hillary Clinton for president as a "protest" and would encourage others to do the same. ("Feminist leader says no to Obama," Star Tribune, May 30, 2008)

The DFL Feminist Caucus has never discussed this "protest" inside or outside our meetings nor has anyone ever address it with us. As president, I would have aggressively discouraged such an effort. Indeed, to promote such an effort would violate the very tenets of our political party.

6. Here's the email I sent to her, after I read that disgusting article
in the Minneapolis Star/Trib:

Dear Koryne Horbal,
Are you INSANE?
Right on the front page of the DFLFC website is an event called "Pro-Choice Coalition Meeting for Lobbying at MN Women's Building." What the HELL do you think is going to happen to the Supreme Court if John McCain is elected to George W. Bush's third term?? What chance does Roe v. Wade have of surviving four years of another Republican in the White House? Your pathetically childish attitude about Hillary's "entitlement" to the Presidency is exactly the kind of thing that gives TRUE feminism a bad name.
So, you think we've had too many men as president. So you plan to have a write-in campaign for Hillary, even if that results in ANOTHER MAN, and FROM THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, elected? How, exactly, does that support the feminist cause? And do you really think that, after the poor campaign that Hillary has run, with her changing the rules in the middle of the game when it's to her benefit, with her non-misstatements and her non-apologies, she has a prayer of getting elected in four years? Her only hope for future electability is if she exits this with some grace and salvages some dignity, instead of whining that it's "her turn."
It's NOBODY'S "turn." The presidency should be decided on issues, not gender, not race, not anything else. Yes, I would have been thrilled and excited if we had elected a woman president. I will, however, be equally thrilled and excited when we elect the first African American president.

I'd like to share with you a piece that a male friend wrote, and gave me permission to pass along. I've already sent it to every woman I know, and they've passed it along as well.

"Hey, all you pissed-off women. Vote for McCain.

That's the right thing to do.

Vote for repeal of Roe v Wade.
Vote for endless wars to send your babies off to.
Vote for the impoverishment of the bottom 99.9% of the population.
Vote for the destruction of public education. Hell, schoolin' ain't gonna do your kids no good nohow because there will be no jobs for them.
Vote for a guy who doesn't know what a mortgage is. You didn't really need that house anyway.
Vote for a guy who wants to Bomb-Bomb-Bomb-Iran, even though he's kinda confused on who runs that country.
Vote to deprive yourselves and your families of health care.
Vote for the guy who's drooling to turn the country over to corporate rule. (Oops--might be wrong on that one. Maybe he's just drooling.)
Vote for three more Supreme Court Justices to the right of Alito, Scalia and Roberts. That'll make sure the next two or three generations will have reason to remember how mad you are.

Yeah. Vote for McCain.

That'll show us evil, sexist bastards a thing or two."

How dare you state that "There's just not many feminists out there who have a backbone." I have enough of a backbone to vote for whomever I believe the best candidate to be, regardless of gender. I have enough backbone to vote with my brain, not my genitalia.

And to Rosmary Rocco: you obviously have a logic impairment. "We've had 43 men as president, and regardless of his color, that's who Barack Obama is."
Um, Ma'am? John McCain is ALSO A MAN. Do you really want to be partly responsible for allowing our 44th president to be not only another man, but another REPUBLICAN man? You too must be out of your mind.

As a woman in Hillary's prime demographic: over 50, white, making less than $50k/year, I am in support of voting in the candidate who will be the best for women's issues. If it's a choice between Barack Obama and John McSame Old, Same Older, the choice is clear - John McCain would be DESTRUCTIVE to women's issues. Barack Obama would not. Simple as that.

Please don't set the cause of feminism back by decades.

7. When I write her I'll inform her that GLORIA STEINEM is now SUPPORTING OBAMA.
June 5, 2008
Gloria Steinem Supporting Obama

This is a fairly good sign for Obama, and one most people probably didn't see coming - at least not this quickly:

The feminist icon whose writings inspired thousands of American women to a passionate support of Hillary Clinton said yesterday she was not at all crushed by Hillary's loss and believes her race has "absolutely" been good for women. But she now not only supports Democratic nominee Barack Obama, she'll volunteer for him, too.
"I think she changed forever our understanding of the possibilities of leadership," Gloria Steinem said of Hillary in a Herald interview after a morning appearance here. "She showed such courage in the face of a media that was trying constantly to get her out of the race and all the misogyny . . . She put up with that with grace. She enlarged my vision."

Steinem also said she'd be happy in an America where Nancy Pelosi remains speaker of the House, Hillary runs the Senate and Barack Obama is president.
